UMi Rome - Technical characteristics. Mobile phone UMI Rome X (Gold) Technical characteristics of umi rome x

Chinese manufacturers continue to surprise with a large number of phones that are becoming cheaper every day. For example, Umi Rome, an excellent mid-range terminal, retails for an affordable $90. If this surprises you, then you do not yet know about the release of the new model Umi Rome X (photo is shown later in the article) - the “younger brother” of the first mentioned phone, its mini version.

A dream come true?

For Umi, releasing a phone with an eight-core processor, a metal body and three gigabytes of RAM for less than a price is nothing special. What if the same superior performance, albeit with less power, was offered at the incredible price of $60? A dream that can't be true? Umi has done the impossible and produced the Rome X, the world's cheapest metal phone, selling for $60, which aims to become the flagship of budget models. Unlike Rome, Rome X can actually be purchased at this price, so it's definitely not a marketing gimmick.

Design and build

The history of the model is not new, since an identical chassis, only without the X prefix, was already produced. The all-metal aluminum body with 2.5D edges on the sides looks premium. It frames a 5.5-inch LTPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a density of 267 ppi. The thickness of the case is the same - 7.9 mm.

The Rome X's design looks like a cross between Samsung and some of the new phones from the same manufacturer. From a distance, the smartphone looks like an expensive model. But this is only until it is in your hands.

The phone is available in gold and black colors. The metal frame is complemented by a glossy polycarbonate back panel. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the strips on the frame, designed to amplify the signal, do not allow the cover to fit tightly to the phone. This spoils what should be an attractive premium design, although the ability to remove the back panel to access the removable 2,500mAh battery and dual SIM and microSD slot is welcomed by users.

Another thing that ruins the design of the phone, according to users, is the bizarre, randomly placed microphone under the screen, located to the right of the home button. It's not even in the center, which hurts the design, but more importantly, why on earth is it there in the first place?

It is worth noting that the Home button is touch-sensitive and does not have a built-in one. Today, even cheap Chinese phones are equipped with such a sensor, and it is usually located on the back panel. The fact that the phone does not have it at all seems strange to many.

Metal body

It's not all bad. The phone looks great at first glance - it's a fairly large phablet measuring 153.8 x 77mm and weighing 177g, with curved glass, rounded corners and beveled rear edges that allow you to operate the Umi with one hand.

The Umi Rome X's 7.9mm thickness spec is remarkable for a phablet and a significant achievement for a $60 phone. The camera on the back protrudes a little, but at least it's located on top, in the middle, which reduces the likelihood of the smartphone sitting unevenly on a flat surface.

What's really rare in phones is having a front-facing flash in addition to the dual LED flash on the back. It is more convenient to take selfies, conduct video chats and simply check the appearance if there is a backlight, although the fact that the front camera has only 2 MP resolution is depressing.

Another plus: the speaker holes are located at the bottom, not on the back panel. The Umi also has a 3.5mm headphone jack and FM radio works when the headset is connected to the phone.

Unfinished finishing

In general, a brief description of the Umi Rome X phone is as follows - it is still a very “raw” device. According to customer reviews, it clearly lacks shine and polish. In addition, the weight of the smartphone is too unevenly distributed, making it feel very heavy at times.

The front and back panels are prone to fingerprints. This is very annoying for some users. In addition, removing them from the surface of the case is a non-trivial task. Although the smartphone looks very good for $60, unfortunately, according to buyers, it is not worth more.

The front of the phone looks like Chinese gadgets from 2011-2012. The front flash is located near the speaker, and the front camera is located above the screen. Below the display there are three touch buttons: calling up recent applications, going to the home panel and returning, arranged in the order they are listed.

There are two sets of holes drilled on the chin of the phone, on either side of the USB port. But there is only one speaker.

In general, the smartphone gives the impression of a device made of inexpensive but durable material, which, however, lacks, figuratively speaking, finishing. The phone's weight is also unbalanced, both in size and in its mass distribution.

hardware

As already mentioned, the phone has one speaker, although there are two sets of holes for it. However, the main thing is not quantity, but quality, and it leaves much to be desired. The Umi Rome X's audio output, with too much high-frequency, no bass, and low volume, fully corresponds to the word "cheap."

According to user reviews, they had difficulty understanding the interlocutor during a telephone conversation, so the “victim” of terrible quality is not only the loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone, but also the top speaker.

A common advantage of Chinese smartphones is the price-quality ratio. Another plus is dual SIM support. The device allows for simultaneous operation of two calling cards in standby mode, which makes it possible to use different tariffs for work and entertainment. TF memory card up to 64GB is also supported.

Wi-Fi operates at frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz, there is Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, but there is no NFC, OTG and an infrared blaster.

The package includes a USB cable and charger.

Screen

For a $60 phone (Umi Rome X), the display performance is impressive. If we evaluate it on a scale from natural colors to saturated ones, then it gravitates towards the latter. The colors are expressive, as is the case with all LTPS displays.

MediaTek's MiraVision technology helps the Umi Rome X Black a lot. Thanks to it, the image characteristics are significantly improved; you can reduce saturation, contrast and other parameters if natural colors are more to your taste.

Since this is an LTPS display, viewing angles are a bit limited. But many users are quite satisfied with them, without demanding more.

The screen is made using low-temperature ion exchange technology, which increases the impact resistance of the glass surface. The hydrophobic nanocoating is followed by a blue filter, hardened and electrostatic-absorbing coating. The high strength of the screen surface protects it from scratches and cracking even in extreme conditions. The surface allows the installation of additional protective coating.

The Umi Rome X's touchscreen appears to have a low resolution, but that's to be expected from a cheap smartphone, at least at the time of writing.

Duration of work

In Umi Rome X, the battery characteristics with a declared capacity of 2500 mAh allow it to be placed somewhere between low and medium levels. There is no support for 4G LTE, which saves the phone a little, but the differences in the device's service life when operating in 2G and 3G modes are difficult to distinguish.

If you do not connect your smartphone to Wi-Fi, then on a single battery charge it can work from 8 to 10 hours. With Wi-Fi, all a smartphone can do is an hour of work, or two at most. SOT time is about 3-3.5 hours. But if there is a need for long-term operation of the device, you can turn on the energy-saving mode. There is no support for fast or wireless charging.

Software

Most of the manufacturer's phones support the Rootjoy application, which allows you to connect to a PC and quickly save the contents of the memory or reinstall the operating system. This model is no different from such software, although the presence of the pre-installed SuperSU program indicates that the user has been given all access rights.

Out of the box, the phone doesn't have a lot of apps, although having full access to Google Play makes it possible to install everything you need yourself. Users love the scrollable home screen and app drawer. The Smart Wake custom gesture feature works precisely, but makes it possible in Umi Rome X firmware with Android Lollipop OS (5.1).

Performance

According to user reviews, the characteristics of the Umi Rome X phone and its MediaTek MT6580 chip, which includes 4 Cortex A53 cores, as well as the Mali-400 video accelerator in terms of performance (compared to the hardware of modern smartphones) is a step back several steps. Although the device is very budget-friendly, for the money given for it, something better could be created. For example, the MT6582 chip is really inexpensive and has good performance.

The microprocessor is supported by 1 GB of RAM. Compared to the older model, the internal memory has also been reduced to 8 GB, but it can be increased using a TF card.

Tests

The basic functionality you should expect from any smartphone is web browsing, instant messaging and mail, a camera, and of course the ability to make phone calls. Unfortunately, the device doesn't perform very well in any of these categories.

Online surfing is becoming an integral part of our lives, and caching web pages in browsers no longer helps. And Rome X struggles with having a couple of open tabs in Chrome. The Geekbench 3 test gives a single-core score of 359 and a multi-core score of 1,171. AnTuTu 6.0.1 showed a result of 23,964.

Rome X: camera specifications

Both cameras of the model came from her “big brother”. The rear one has an interpolated resolution of 13 megapixels, which is actually 8 megapixels. The sensor is Sony IMX179 with dual flash, six-element lens, blue glass filter and f2.0 aperture. The front two-megapixel camera has its own flash. This should be ideal for taking selfies or video chatting in low light conditions, but unfortunately the front-facing sensor is very low resolution and the flash doesn't make much of a difference.

The rear eight-megapixel camera uses software to increase its resolution to 13 megapixels. The dual LED flash works better than the front one. All the usual modes and options are there, including real-time filters.

Users are not very enthusiastic about the capabilities of the Umi Rome X Gold camera. Its characteristics are sufficient when there is no camera at hand, but in some places the image is very soft and a lot of detail is missing. In addition, it is very slow: saving a photo takes a long time. Again, this is what you'd expect from a $60 phone.

In general, apart from the slow camera speed, which can be attributed to the microprocessor, Rome X allows you to take photographs if you are not too strict about their quality...

Conclusion

Umi is taking a rather risky approach by releasing phones one after another. Although the company has had successful models that made a lot of noise, such as the Touch, this is not the first attempt to conquer a niche in the price range below $100. And with Rome X Umi suffered another setback, but in the very near future, if not this company, then some other Chinese manufacturer will conquer this market segment.

Owners advise purchasing the Umi Rome X 5.5’’ phone, whose characteristics are too low for a modern means of communication, only if you have an extremely limited budget. There are many $100 phones that do a much better job of what they're supposed to do.

The screen clarity is average - not good, and not bad. About the same as in Sony Xperia C3 or Samsung Galaxy A3. The brightness is okay, and the viewing angles are also tolerable. If you tilt the smartphone to the side, the image darkens slightly, but is not inverted or tinted with an extraneous color.

The protective glass is of high quality and does not collect scratches over trifles, but the grease-repellent coating could be more effective - you will have to wipe the display from time to time for greater clarity.

If you need specific comparisons, the display in Honor 4X displays colors a little less reliably, in Wileyfox Storm the image is better in all respects, and ASUS ZenFone Go with its matrix was not close, with all due respect to the Taiwanese brand.

Despite the fact that the standard audio player in a smartphone is ugly and old (such unsightly software has been found in Chinese smartphones for four years now), the Rome headphones sound good. The audio path is typical for the MT6753, without embellishment, but it’s enough to arm yourself with any decent audio player with an equalizer - and the sound will suit everyone except audiophiles with cool headphones.

But the speakerphone in a smartphone, excuse the tautology, is not loud. And it’s not clear - that’s basically how almost any ultra-budget smartphone costs 4-7 thousand rubles sounds. For the ringtone, you should choose the loudest melody possible.

Iron

The MediaTek MT6753 processor is the Taiwanese answer to the mid-range Snapdragon 615/616/617. Eight economical cores handle everyday workloads well, and its agility will only be missed by former owners of 2014/2015 flagship mobile phones. By the way, UMI Rome X with a quad-core MediaTek MT6580 is on sale - it is cheaper and less fast.

In its original version, the MT6753 is able to outshine the Qualcomm model and generally looks like a good alternative to the expensive Californian chip. True, in our UMI Rome the processor did not always produce the power equivalent to its eight cores. There is a reason for this - chronic overheating. The smartphone very quickly becomes hot in games and, although it does not begin to slow down (1280x720 pixels help out), in fact it sharply loses speed.

Operating system: Operating system. Symbian OS - This is probably the most common operating system for smartphones.
The most common Symbian-based platforms now are: Series 60 (the most popular platform, used on Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Lenovo, LG and Sony Ericsson models, etc.), Series 80 (used in some Nokia models), Series 90 (currently used only on Nokia 7710), UIQ (models from Nokia, Benq, Motorola, Arima, Sony Erisson, and MOAP (closed platform, installed on Fujitsu, Sony Ericsson, Mitsubishi and Sharp phones).

Android This is Google's operating system, also sometimes called Droid.
Right after the introduction of smartphones and tablets in the market, Android gained immense popularity due to its beautiful appearance and efficient performance.
The main advantage of Android compared to other operating systems is its almost completely open architecture and deep integration with Google services. There is already a sufficiently large amount of software for this OS so that almost any user does not feel left out, and the software market is developing quite dynamically.

Apple (iOS) This is Apple's operating system used in the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
iOS was revealed on June 29, 2007, when the first iPhone appeared.

BlackBerry This is the operating system of Research in Motion (RIM).

Windows Phone and Windows Mobile are Microsoft's latest mobile operating system.
The main advantages of Windows Mobile are the interface familiar to desktop PCs, good implementation of multitasking, support for devices with high screen resolutions, a wide variety of smartphone models, and an abundance of software for every taste and for any task. Today's filling of the Windows Mobile communicators market allows the user to find decent models in almost any price range.

Bada (bada means ocean in Korean) is a new platform for smartphones that allows developers to create feature-rich applications that enhance the user experience on mobile devices.
The Bada operating system for Samsung phones includes a new UI framework for the next generation of user interface for Samsung Touch phones. The UI framework makes using the phone simple and relaxed, without compromising its functionality. It is a revolutionary innovation that significantly enhances the conventional user interface of touch phones.

UMI continues to expand its range of smartphones; UMI Rome was introduced at the end of last year. A serious application in the segment up to 7000-8000 rubles ($100), which received a “shock” filling and an attractive design. Considering what is now offered in this budget on the Russian market, it may well become a “hit”. This level of performance and quality of performance until recently was the lot of only flagship devices, but now with modest investments it has become possible to save money without compromising comfortable use.

We are pleased to present the first detailed review of UMI Rome. Its sales started not long ago, and it is now available for $109 at CooliCool store with free delivery throughout Russia. By the time this review was published, a lightweight version of UMI ROME X had also been released. It is distinguished by a three times smaller amount of RAM, lack of LTE support, a reduced amount of internal memory and a junior version of the 8-core chip. They are asking $64 for it.

Video review of UMI Rome

Equipment

UMI Rome is supplied in a compact white cardboard package. On the reverse side are detailed technical specifications.

The package includes a protective film for the screen, a 1A charger, and a micro USB cable. Brief instructions are printed on the inside of the box. Additionally, we took care of purchasing a protective cover. Version with lid:

Appearance

Even before receiving this smartphone, when studying promotional shots and photographs, a direct association arose with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. These same thoughts were confirmed by a series of comments from participants in our competition, where UMI Rome was played.

This is especially noticeable for the golden color (champagne); it will also be available in black. It looks no less impressive.

The smartphone clearly looks more expensive than its price, head and shoulders above its classmates. I was pleased with the quality of materials and workmanship. All parts fit perfectly together. Nothing creaks, bends or plays.

The associations of external similarity in this model are associated with the bend on the back cover; the same bend is on the S6 Edge screen, and here it is on the back side. According to personal feelings, the UMI Rome has a more comfortable tactile feel and ease of placement in the hand. Doesn't cut into the palm and doesn't slip out.

Another discovery was the use of a real metal frame rather than a chrome-plated body paint. This had a good effect on structural rigidity and durability.

The edges of the side face are slightly beveled. On the front there is a protruding edge that slightly raises the screen above the surface of the body.

The front part of UMI Rome is covered with Gorilla Glass, which is scratch-resistant. The side frames around the screen are thin. There are three touch buttons at the bottom, a speaker grille, proximity and light sensors, and a front camera lens at the top. Selfie lovers will appreciate the additional front camera.

The arrangement of connectors and buttons on the UMI Rome is traditional: an audio jack on top, a paired speaker grille and micro USB on the bottom, a volume rocker and a power button on the right.

The back cover is removable; it fits tightly to the body; a little effort is required to remove it. At the top, the main camera lens protrudes slightly above the surface, paired with an LED flash.

Underneath there are two compartments for micro SIM and a slot for a memory card. There is also a removable battery.

The overall dimensions of the UMI Rome case are 153.8x77x7.9 mm and weighs 177 grams. There are no complaints about the appearance and materials.

Screen

A 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with HD resolution (1280 by 720 pixels) is installed. The pixel density for this diagonal is low. But this is quite enough for comfortable work with the interface, watching movies and reading text. Individual pixels are not noticeable.

This matrix is distinguished by high contrast and deep black color. The screen backlight is uniform, UMI Rome has no glare. The brightness can be adjusted automatically. There is no air gap between the screen and the protective glass. The sides of the screen are rounded.

Filling

The heart of UMI Rome is the MediaTek MTK6753 processor with a frequency of 1.3 GHz. This is an eight-core platform with Mali-T720 graphics. The chip has proven itself well; the performance level is sufficient for smooth operation of the interface and launching complex 3D games. The popular game World of Tanks Blitz runs at high graphics settings. Heating of the cover during prolonged maximum load is minimal.

On board there are 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Commendable for your budget. The memory is expandable, we tested it on a 64 GB memory card.

Connection

The smartphone can operate in LTE networks and supports all frequencies used by Russian operators. The work has been tested in Yota networks, no manual configuration was required, the data exchange speed is high. A dual-band Wi-Fi module and Bluetooth 4.1 are installed. GPS works flawlessly; searching for satellites during a cold start takes about 15-20 seconds.

Battery

A 2500 mAh battery is responsible for autonomous operation. This is enough for 4.5 hours when launching games. About 7 hours of movie playback. In a normal scenario, you can last an entire working day without needing to charge. On long trips it would be a good idea to get a PowerBank. Charging with the included charger takes 2.5 hours.

Camera

An 8 megapixel camera is installed with a Sony IMX179 module with a maximum number of up to 13 megapixels. The camera is equipped with an autofocus system. For modern smartphones, camera quality is a very important criterion. The times when people used digital compact cameras are long gone; smartphones are now widely used. But there are a large number of people who believe that the quality of pictures directly depends on the number of megapixels. In reality, this is more influenced by the quality of the optics, aperture, physical dimensions of the sensor and pixels, and the software component.

The new module from Sony has 8.08 million effective pixels, which is one of the best sensors with this resolution. It is also used in Huawei Honor 6 Plus and LG Nexus 5. In terms of quality, it surpasses a number of 13 MP matrices with the same physical sensor dimensions. This is due to the fact that each pixel receives more color and, as a result, more accurately conveys the picture. The F/2.0 aperture makes its contribution. The front camera here is 2.0 MP. The quality of the images can be assessed below; only automatic modes are used without post-processing.

Software

The Google Android 5.1 operating system is installed with support for over-the-air updates. There are no proprietary shells or additional settings. In fact, this is a reference system without third-party software; most of Google services have been removed.

You can install everything you need yourself from Google Play, there are no restrictions. In the future, the user will be able to choose between several firmware options using the RootJoy utility.

Results for UMI Rome

UMI Rome is that rare case when savings will not result in poor build quality and malfunctions. The strengths include a spectacular appearance, AMOLED HD screen, 8-core processor, 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, aluminum frame, support for two SIM cards in LTE mode, dual-band Wi-Fi, high-quality camera, front flash, clean Android 5.1. Conditional disadvantages include the low battery capacity and the need to wait from the moment of purchase to receipt. At the moment, this is the best option in a budget up to 8,000 rubles.

UMI Rome receives the well-deserved award "Gold...
