Which Windows 8 tablet to choose. The best Windows tablet: review, specifications and reviews

Just the other day, Microsoft held an event where it officially introduced the Windows 8 operating system. One of the main features of this operating system is a new interface created to improve the usability of working with tablets. Therefore, it’s time to talk about Windows 8 tablets. In this article we will look at the currently existing Windows 8 tablets, as well as their features and differences from tablets based on other operating systems.

The first thing you need to understand is that there are two types of Windows 8 tablets:

  • Tablets based on x86 architecture are equipped with a regular version of the Windows 8 operating system.
  • tablets based on ARM architecture are equipped with a special version of the Windows 8 operating system called Windows RT.

Windows 8 tablets based on x86 architecture (Intel processors).

The x86 architecture is the common architecture used in all modern personal computers (desktops and laptops). , built on x86, are equipped with regular mobile phones. It can be .

Advantages of Windows 8 tablets based on x86 architecture.

Tablets based on x86 architecture will be equipped with the usual edition of the Windows 8 operating system, the same as will be installed on regular desktop computers and . Thus, when buying a tablet with x86 architecture, you get a regular computer in a tablet form factor. Any programs that work on Windows desktops will work on these tablets. This is a huge advantage, but there are also disadvantages.

Disadvantages of Windows 8 tablets based on x86 architecture.

The x86 architecture consumes a lot of power. This means that, all other things being equal, an x86-based tablet will run less on battery power and generate more heat. Most Windows 8 tablets with x86 architecture are equipped with active cooling, that is, a rotating cooler. This means that they will also make a little noise.

Windows 8 tablets based on ARM architecture.

The architecture is the newer architecture that is now used in phones, tablets and other portable devices. Almost any modern smartphone or tablet is guaranteed to run on ARM architecture.

Advantages of Windows 8 tablets based on ARM architecture.

From an end-user perspective, the ARM architecture has just one big advantage: it consumes less power and generates less heat. Devices based on ARM architecture can last significantly longer on battery power than x86-based devices. In addition, ARM-based devices do not require active cooling, which means that such devices operate completely silently.

Disadvantages of Windows 8 tablets based on ARM architecture.

From the point of view of a Windows 8 tablet user, the disadvantage of ARM is its incompatibility with x86. ARM-based tablets use a special version of the Windows operating system called Windows RT. The Windows RT operating system is not compatible with programs written for the regular version of Windows. This means that on an ARM-based tablet (and Windows RT), you won't be able to run any programs written for regular Windows 8 or previous versions of Windows.

A striking example of Windows 8 tablets with different architectures are Surface tablets from Microsoft itself. The company offers two tablets:

  • Surface with Windows RT is a tablet based on ARM architecture with the Windows RT operating system. On sale now for $499;
  • Surface with Windows 8 Pro is a tablet based on classic x86 architecture with the Windows 8 Pro operating system.

Windows 8 tablets with ARM architecture are ideal for entertainment: watching videos, surfing the Internet and games downloaded from the official Microsoft store. Since such tablets will not support old Windows programs, they can hardly be considered as a tool for work.

Windows 8 tablets with x86 architecture are, in fact, full-fledged computers. On such tablets you can run any Windows programs and use them as a working tool.

Windows 8 tablet form factors

Recently, tablets made in unusual form factors have already appeared on the market. For example, Asus Transformer based on the Android operating system. But with the advent of Windows 8, almost all tablet manufacturers presented their unusual solutions.

Classic tablet.

A classic tablet can be considered a device that can only be used as a tablet, without the ability to transform into some kind of laptop. If you are, you should first pay attention to such devices. This form factor includes, for example, the HP ElitePad 900 tablet.

Tablet + Keyboard dock.

This form factor was first used by Asus in its Asus Transformer tablet. Tablets in this form factor are equipped with an additional keyboard that houses the battery and other components typical for laptops. Thus, by connecting the keyboard unit to the tablet, the user gets an almost full-fledged laptop. A striking example of a tablet with this form factor: the recently introduced Windows 8 tablet called Asus Transformer Book.

Asus Transformer Book

Slider tablet.

Another very unusual form factor for Windows 8 tablets. Tablets in this form factor are built in such a way that they can transform into a laptop in just one motion.

One of the most advanced tablets in the slider form factor is the Sony VAIO Duo 11. This device is equipped with everything you need to work with it as a full-fledged laptop.

Sony VAIO Duo 11

Transformable laptops.

Transformer laptops cannot be called tablets in the full sense of the word. Rather, these are laptops with the ability to transform into a tablet. Probably the most interesting solution among transformable laptops is the solution from Lenovo. The Lenovo Yoga laptop allows the user to flip the screen to the bottom side of the device. Thus, the laptop turns into a tablet.

Determining which Windows 2018 tablets are worth buying has recently become more difficult than before.

There are more variants of such products appearing on the market, where one of the versions is available (most often, Home).

Some companies have already released several generations of tablets with a desktop operating system, and both a more modern and a previous version can be found on the market.

Features of choice

Despite the huge variety of tablets (in online stores you can find models from more than 10 manufacturers and up to hundreds of different offers), choosing the right option is not as difficult as it seems.

This choice is made, first of all, according to tablet capabilities:

  • The storage capacity (usually MMC or ). The minimum acceptable value for a device with Windows installed should not be less than 32 GB, preferably from 64 GB.
  • Processor. Tablets with Windows are equipped with both ergonomic, but weak Intel Atom, and more productive Intel Core (from i3 to i7).
  • . The minimum RAM for the system is 2 GB, the optimal value is from 4 to 8 GB.
  • The type of keyboard that a number of models already come with.
  • Interface – the number and types of connectors and ports that provide connection to monitors, storage devices and other devices.

Having chosen the parameters, you should pay attention to the price category.

Budget models can be purchased for less than $200, the most productive – from $1000.

Battery life and weight are of serious importance - the first characteristic shows whether the tablet will have to be charged during the day, the second determines ease of use.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5 – the most convenient control ever

The 2017 Surface Pro model is not much different in functionality from the 4th generation. Features include 4096 pressure levels supported by the tablet's stylus and the installation of a more modern build of Windows.

The built-in graphics have also changed, gaining greater frequency and capabilities - and although modern games still won’t run on a tablet PC, the indicator will increase slightly in older ones.

  • outdated version of USB ports,
  • no keyboard included
  • relatively high cost. However, the last drawback is corrected by choosing a model that is not the most productive or one of the gadgets of the previous generation.

Oleg L.: While using the tablet, I noticed that the battery life has noticeably increased compared to the 4th generation - this is no less pleasing than the high-quality picture on the screen. I also liked the lack of a fan on the Surface Pro 4.

Dell Latitude 5285 – the most secure and powerful

The difference between the Dell Latitude 5285 tablet and most other models is the presence of several degrees of protection.

First of all, this is a fingerprint scanner, and secondly, a special data encryption function.

Security is also enhanced by the option to recognize the user's face with the camera, and the technical characteristics of the tablet are not inferior to desktop computers.

  • The gadget also has a lot of disadvantages, although much fewer.
  • First of all, this is the high cost of the model, and secondly, the average quality of the cameras (although this is not so important for a tablet PC).
  • Not everyone will be satisfied with the amount they will have to pay for such a tablet.

Ekaterina B.: An excellent tablet for work and study. Satisfied with almost everything - from the time of use without recharging to the ability to launch any program and quickly work on the network. If desired, you can even launch a game with it, although not the newest one.

DELL Latitude 7285 – the most versatile

The difference between the Latitude 7285 tablet and the previous model is a lower level of security.

The functionality and autonomy of the gadget are almost at the same level.

And the smaller size of RAM and ROM are practically unnoticeable - on the Dell Latitude 5285 their volume might even seem excessive to many users.

  • support for several types of keyboards;
  • wireless charging function, which works with a special docking station;
  • high quality screen;
  • support for working with a stylus;
  • USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 connectors.
  • The disadvantages of the technology are considered to be relatively low autonomy and decent cost.
  • And the screen resolution can be called too high for a 12-inch screen - this increases the price of the tablet, but is unlikely to be needed by the user.

Alexander V.: I bought the tablet because of the excellent screen and large solid-state drive. I didn’t find any downsides - except maybe the fifteen hundred dollars that I had to pay for it. Although this drawback is unlikely to surprise those who immediately count on good equipment and are willing to pay a decent amount for it.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the best value of powerful tablets

There are many reasons to buy a tablet PC from the previous generation - a model with 8 GB of RAM costs about 30% less compared to a similar version in 2017.

Sellers are gradually getting rid of goods, reducing the price, so there is little point in spending money on a new 8-GB model while there are still old ones left.

All the characteristics of the gadget are almost the same as those of the Surface Pro (2017), except that the stylus is slightly different for the worse - the more modern model has already received an improved version of the Surface Pen.

  • high sensitivity and good display resolution;
  • complete set with a comfortable and functional pen;
  • relatively affordable price for its characteristics;
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 is an integrated video card comparable in parameters to 1-GB models for desktop PCs.
  • large size and weight, due to which they are not very convenient to use when suspended.
  • Some people won't like the lack of a cover in the basic package.
  • Others will not be satisfied with the inconveniently located headset jack.

Egor D.: Excellent tablet with good built-in graphics. Suitable for Internet surfing, work, and even games. However, I can only play on minimum settings, but that’s not why I bought it.

Samsung Galaxy Book 12 – best screen

Samsung Galaxy Book has a minimal size and weight of only 900 grams, making it as convenient to use as a regular tablet.

If necessary, the gadget turns into a fairly functional ultrabook.

It has only one camera, but the quality of shooting is not inferior to even more expensive models.

  • Among the disadvantages of the Galaxy Book 12 model are the inconvenient keyboard case and the lack of a stand.
  • The relatively weak battery can also be called a minus - it only lasts for 3 hours of operation at maximum load. Although in normal mode the battery will last for 8–10 hours.

Konstantin K.: Excellent premium design, metal and glass are good reasons to buy this particular tablet. I also liked the good keyboard and the ability to install a SIM card. And at this price, the gadget turned out better than the latest iPads and even Surface Pro from Microsoft.

ASUS Transformer Mini T103HAF – optimal price-quality ratio

The model is equipped with good speakers and a decent 8000 mAh battery for its size.

The tablet does not come with an electronic pen, but there is a case with a keyboard.

The gadget can be called a tablet computer “for growth” - in the future, when all Russian operators begin to support eSIM technology (SIM cards built into devices), owners of the Mini T103HAF will have the opportunity to use .

  • The advantages of the model include such features as a bright screen, a built-in suite of office applications and stylus support, as well as a decent amount of permanent memory.
  • In addition, the tablet has SonicMaster speakers - not the best, but more decent than most similar gadgets.
  • An advantage would be the presence of a SIM card slot, but the eSIM format is not yet supported by mobile operators in the Russian Federation.
  • glare on the screen when working in the sun;
  • short charger cable, which will most likely have to be replaced;
  • long charging time.

Sergey L.: I wanted to buy a portable and inexpensive tablet PC with Windows OS, on which I could continue to work with the same programs as on the computer. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to play on it, but for Internet surfing, an office suite and watching videos, the capabilities of this Asus are more than enough.

Lenovo Yoga Book YB1-X91L – the best keyboard

Lenovo produces a whole series with different parameters.

The Yoga Book YB1-X91L model can be classified as mid-segment both in price and parameters.

At the same time, having Windows already installed allows you to work on the tablet with the same applications as on a regular computer, and the presence of a touch keyboard makes the gadget convenient for people in creative professions.

  • the presence of a touch keyboard that allows you to turn your Tablet PC into a real graphics tablet;
  • LTE format support;
  • good battery life.
  • The main disadvantage is the fairly high cost for a tablet with 64 GB of RAM.
  • Disadvantages can also be seen in the touch keyboard, which not every user will like. However, the tablet's performance is not enough for modern games.

Victor I.: This is my second month using the tablet. I like its lightness and long-term operation without recharging. Not only do I like the appearance and touch keyboard of the gadget, but it also has an almost magical effect on people - especially when I start taking notes in the form of handwritten notes.

HP X2 10 Z8350 – better sound

HP's model combines the advantages of both a tablet and a .

A small and not too heavy gadget with 4 GB of RAM will cope with the same tasks that an inexpensive laptop can perform.

At the same time, the Tablet PC takes up less space, is more convenient to carry and is easily transformed.

  • The advantage of the model is the high-quality sound of the speakers located on the front panel - although they make the appearance of the transformable tablet a little unusual.
  • An additional feature is good memory and convenient attachment of the keyboard to the main part.
  • A set of interfaces provides connection to almost any peripheral.

Vyacheslav M.: Not a bad gadget with Windows and a minimal price. True, to get started, it took installing third-party applications and a lot of time to customize it for yourself. But then the tablet became just an ideal assistant in all matters and a good “bedside” model.

BB-Mobile Techno W8.0 3G – the most compact

The model is considered one of the most affordable among Windows tablets.

Vladimir L.: What I liked about the tablet was automatic Windows updates with support for modern applications. A good indicator of the model is support for a number of undemanding games. I also like the sound - it's not too loud, but it's still better than many real laptops.

conclusions

When choosing a good tablet with Windows, you should pay attention to the model DELL Latitude 5285 and two generations Microsoft Surface Pro– 4th with 8 GB of RAM and 5th with 4 GB of RAM.

Their functionality is the highest among devices of this level - although the prices are quite high.

If you want to purchase an inexpensive tablet with a desktop operating system, you can choose a model with optimal quality, capabilities and price - ASUS Transformer Mini T103HAF.

If one of your main goals is to save money, tablet PCs are quite suitable. BB-Mobile Techno W8.0 3G And Prestigio MultiPad Visconte A PMP1014TE, the purchase of which is unlikely to have a noticeable impact on the family budget.

With the release of Windows 8, many new devices appeared on store shelves: laptops with touch screens, tablets with a full-fledged G8, as well as various transformers. This article is intended to help those who cannot decide on the form factor of the device before purchasing.

Introduction

I'll be honest, I personally was very skeptical about Windows 8 tablets... until my trip to Barcelona for MWC. Besides me, Artem and Eldar Murtazin also worked at the exhibition. I noticed that Artem took his own wireless keyboard with him, when asked “Why?” he answered simply: “I’m used to typing on it, it’s more convenient for me.” And so I watched as he typed on a laptop with his own keyboard, and something in this design was clearly superfluous - of course, we are talking about the laptop’s built-in keyboard. If you use your accessory, then it loses its meaning.

I also took my keyboard with me and caught myself thinking that it would be much more convenient to use a tablet + keyboard combination. Even then, I noticed the Acer Iconia W700, one of the few tablets on a full-fledged “eight” with an excellent design and a very good screen, and decided to take it with me on one of my trips.

In this article I would like to talk about how convenient Windows tablets and laptops are in various usage scenarios. The fact is that for many people, having Windows is fundamental, so they don’t even look at devices running other OSes. This article will be based on my impressions of two models: Acer Iconia W700 and Asus S200

However, do not confuse this article with a comparison of these two models; it is not a head-to-head comparison, but rather general conclusions that will apply to most other tablets and laptops. I would also like to note the price segment for this article: it will be limited to 20-25 thousand rubles (ultrabooks are not included in this comparison).

Dimensions, ease of carrying

In theory, a tablet is much more convenient to carry with you, in addition, most tablets are lighter in weight than laptops (the W700 is an exception), and it would seem that they have all the advantages, if not for one “but”. You also need to carry a keyboard with you, which takes up about the same space as a tablet (or a little less, but that’s not the point). As a result, the total weight and volume of the tablet with the keyboard will be at the level of a laptop, and the disadvantage is that the keyboard dangles separately in the backpack.

Mobility and work in one place

Relatively speaking, both a laptop and a tablet are mobile devices. But the word “mobility” in the title means something a little different. We are talking about working at a desk in one place, or constantly moving and typing on your knees or other unstable surfaces.

So, let's imagine that you are flying/going on a trip, all your main work will take place in the office or in a hotel room. That is, a static situation. In this case, it would be more appropriate to take a tablet with a keyboard, especially if you have to type a lot and you are used to the “native” keyboard.

But laptops are better suited for those who are constantly on the road and only sometimes have time to grab 20-30 minutes to quickly type or take notes on something on the run. In fairness, it is worth noting that if you are used to a laptop keyboard, then it may be suitable for long work in the office.

Screen

I don’t know if this is a coincidence or intentional, but for some reason Windows 8 tablets (and the Acer W700 is a prime example) are equipped with much better screens than laptops in the same price segment. Judge for yourself: laptops under 25 thousand rubles do not have Full HD resolution and IPS matrices, but tablets based on the same G8 are almost universally equipped with them. And the W700 screen looks absolutely great compared to laptops.

However, in addition to the quality of the screen, there is also such a parameter as the tilt angle. And this is where laptops have an advantage, because tablets can only be fixed in two tilt positions (thanks to the case).

Performance

If we talk about processors, most tablets have Intel Core i3/5 or the latest generation Intel Atom, while most laptops are equipped with the penultimate generation Core i3/5. Intel HD 3000/4000 is responsible for graphics in both cases (except for versions with Atom). But the situation with memory is radically different. Personally, I have almost never seen laptops with SSD drives; they are all equipped with 320 or 500 GB hard drives. But tablets almost always have a 64/128 GB solid-state drive on board. Of course, some may complain about the amount of memory, but let's be honest: how often do you need more than 30 GB of free space (except for watching movies)? Personally, no, a few free gigabytes for photos and texts are enough.

To summarize: in terms of performance, thanks to SSD, tablets are in the lead. But I can’t say the same about versions with the latest Intel Atom (I haven’t tested them yet).

Watching films

I remember back in the days of the old Cowon Q5W, I dreamed of a small tablet on Windows 7, on which I could put MediaPlayer Classic and watch any, even the most difficult, video without any problems. Much water has passed under the bridge since then, Microsoft managed to introduce another version of its OS, and manufacturers finally began mass-producing Windows tablets. As a result, now you can watch almost any movie from your tablet without any problems.

I think everyone understands that laptops are not the best devices for consuming media content, so at this point they are clearly inferior to tablets.

A few thoughts about Windows 8 tablets

I sincerely feel sorry for the hardware manufacturers, because Microsoft played a cruel joke on them by releasing such an unsuccessful OS. I look at the same W700, and I really like it: wonderful appearance, excellent body materials, amazing screen (Acer did everything in their power), but with all this, I understand that all this magic will not be used in the Metro environment, but on a regular desktop, not optimized for finger control.

It seems to me that Windows tablets are positioned as devices for entertainment (Twitter, email, web surfing, games) with the ability to quickly work with documents or specialized programs. However, in reality, it turns out that neither entertainment, nor specialized programs, nor even Word are optimized for a touch screen, and as a result, we have a sort of stripped-down laptop without a keyboard.

Conclusion

On my last trip, I took both the Acer W700 and the Asus S200 with me, the idea, of course, is crazy, but I was just afraid to go to the event with one tablet, you never know. As a result, I spent most of my time on my laptop. At first, my mouse didn’t connect to the tablet, then I couldn’t set the tilt angle that was comfortable for me, as a result, I gave up on all this and moved to the laptop. Still, it is much more suitable as a tool for traveling. In addition, it is simply inconvenient to take a tablet with you to a presentation or other event.

And tablets, in my opinion, are more suitable for students. Judge for yourself, at the institute they are used as a typewriter with its own or a complete keyboard, and on the way home/from home they serve as a reader/media player. In addition, you do not need a separate reading device at home. In addition, apparently, in just a couple of months, many light and thin G8 tablets with Intel Atom on board will appear on the market (Samsung Ativ Tab 3 is one of them).

The peak of popularity of tablets has passed; modern smartphones are practically not inferior in capabilities and characteristics to small computers. Nevertheless, such devices are still in demand, primarily due to their compactness and maximum proximity to a regular PC. This is especially true for gadgets with the Windows operating system. The user does not need to adapt to new conditions; he works in a familiar environment.

We present to your attention a selection of the best Windows tablets in different categories. The choice is based not only on capabilities and technical characteristics, but also on reviews from real users.

The best inexpensive tablets for Windows: budget up to 20,000 rubles.

4 Haier HV103H

Best price
Country: China
Average price: 11,730 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.3

This model pleases not only with its excellent technical characteristics, but also with the most affordable price. This is the most inexpensive device on the Windows platform. At the same time, it has something to brag about: 64 GB of internal memory, this is actually not that much, but there is a slot for a memory card, however, its volume should not exceed 64 GB. But the RAM is only 2 GB, against the backdrop of a good quad-core processor, this is not the best indicator. It will no longer be possible to run resource-intensive applications and games, but to work in the mail-documents connection, it’s better not to.

As the owners write in their reviews, this is an excellent tablet for the money. The keyboard connects easily and works flawlessly. It performs well in both laptop and tablet modes. The Haier HV103H is a great workhorse at a budget price. The battery lasts for 8 hours of full use. This model deserves a decent start in the ranking of the best.

3 Digma EVE 1801 3G

Excellent screen quality
A country: UK (manufactured in China)
Average price: 14410 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

Users like this model for a number of characteristics. The first thing you should pay attention to is a high-quality screen. Its diagonal is 10.1 inches and the resolution is 1280 x 800, excellent for viewing images and movies, as well as for working in programs and applications. High quality color rendering and contrast allow you to fully enjoy excellent shots. The tablet is equipped with a very capacious battery, 6000 mAh is enough to ensure the proper level of autonomy. The device has only 32 GB of internal memory, but is equipped with a slot for a memory card up to 128 GB.

The tablet connects to the Internet not only on the WiFi network, but also has a slot for a SIM card. Thanks to this, you don’t have to look for an access point to work, which increases mobility. The device has a processor with good performance; the Intel Atom x5-Z8300 ensures excellent operation of all programs designed for Windows OS. Considering that the version of the operating system is the most current, there are no problems with downloading and installation either. Digma EVE 1801 is an excellent solution for everyday work and undemanding games. He deservedly took his place in our ranking.

2 Lenovo Miix 320 10 2Gb 32Gb WiFi

High autonomy. Light weight (580 g.)
Country: China
Average price: 18,030 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Another great and inexpensive gadget in our selection. Here, the kit includes a full-size keyboard with a full-fledged touchpad, which turns the tablet into a real mini-computer. At the same time, high mobility is maintained. The model is very light weight (only 580 g), making it convenient to carry. In addition, users note the build quality. According to them, the case does not crunch or play. The IPS display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, it pleases with excellent viewing angles and color reproduction. The owners only complain about the low brightness; it is not comfortable to use on a sunny day.

The device is equipped with a fairly capacious battery, it provides a high level of autonomy for the tablet. Thanks to the quad-core Intel Atom x5 Z8350 processor with a clock frequency of 1440 MHz, the device allows you to play games with average resource intensity and low system requirements. There is only 2 GB of RAM, which is not enough for full-fledged work, so users often notice freezes.Otherwise, this is an excellent solution; the Lenovo Miix 320 deservedly participates in the ranking of the best Windows tablets.

1 Irbis TW118

Big screen. Full Windows
Country Russia
Average price: RUB 16,456.
Rating (2019): 4.9

The domestic manufacturer has pleased users with an excellent tablet, which has taken a leading position in our ranking of the best Windows devices. According to users in their reviews, this is an excellent replacement laptop for work. Especially considering the fact that a full-fledged operating system is used here. That is, the interface completely replicates the computer’s working environment. The kit includes an external keyboard, which can be detached if desired. The owners also like the reasonable price of the device; for relatively little money the user gets an excellent working tool.

Among the technical components, it is worth noting a dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1100 MHz. It is not the most powerful, but it copes well with everyday tasks: surfing the Internet, working in office programs, watching videos, light entertainment. The device will not support heavier applications and resource-intensive games. The large widescreen screen with a diagonal of 11.6 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 is also worthy of attention. Irbis TW118 is an excellent solution for those who need a mobile, lightweight and universal gadget with a familiar operating system at a minimal price.

The best Windows tablets with a 7-9 inch screen

These are small tablets that are not so common today. Nevertheless, we want to present some of the best models in this category.

3 Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 128Gb 4Gb

Best protection against external influences
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 186,103.
Rating (2019): 4.2

This is the most expensive tablet in our rating, and this is perhaps its only noticeable drawback. The device is completely rubberized, the body is made to the highest standards of protection. The current model is not afraid of falls, scratches, dust, moisture and sudden temperature changes. The device is lightweight and has a small diagonal (7 inches). The display is highly bright, making it easy to use the device in sunlight. The sensor is responsive and recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches. Screen resolution is optimized for the current operating system and work tasks.
