Virtual reality glasses Homido v2. Review of Homido V2 and Homido Grab - inexpensive VR headsets from France Impressions and conclusions

Homido V2 is nothing more than an improved model of the Homido V1 helmet. The developers call one of the main advantages of this series the ability to finely adjust optical settings. This allows you to make the headset as comfortable as possible for people with myopia and farsightedness. If in the first model the adjustment was carried out by selecting attachments for the helmet lenses, then in the V2 special regulators are responsible for the delicacy of the adjustment.

Design and equipment

Let's take a closer look at Homido V2. The basic package, in addition to the helmet, includes: a belt for fastening, instructions for use, microfiber for lenses, a replaceable foam attachment and a durable case. On the body of the helmet itself there are settings for focus and interpupillary distance. The design of the device is minimalistic: the helmet body is made in black with small splashes of red. Black and red are the predominant colors in Homido products.

Ergonomics

Despite the possibility of adjustment, the fastening of the belt may seem too tight for some - this is the only complaint that arose during the operation of the Homido V2. Otherwise there are only advantages. The adjustable optics tested by our editors have proven their effectiveness - this helmet is also suitable for people with mild myopia (−3). The foam pad provides additional comfort.

Homido Grab - virtual reality glasses, in many ways reminiscent of its older friend Homido V2, but lacking some of its features, namely, optics settings, support belt, foam attachment and case included.

Design

Externally, Homido Grab is noticeably more attractive than Homido V2, although there are few significant differences. The dotted relief of the case not only helps to fix the glasses in your hands, but also makes the texture of the Homido Grab more pleasant. On the sides there are two (apparently, the developers really wanted to focus on this) Works with Google Cardboard stickers. Homido's assortment includes glasses made in black, red, white, blue, yellow and pink.

Ergonomics

Despite the inability to adjust optical settings, Homido Grab passed the test of a myopic user: the picture did not blur, and the glasses were in no way inferior to Homido V2 in terms of image quality.

Where Grab is significantly inferior to V2 is in ease of use. The glasses, made entirely of plastic, do not fit tightly to the face, which not only makes their long-term use uncomfortable, but also prevents complete immersion in the gameplay and the beauty of three-dimensional landscapes. The body presses unpleasantly on the bridge of the nose, and peripheral vision catches fragments of the surrounding reality.

Working with applications

For comfortable use of its headsets, Homido has developed the Homido Center application. In it you can find a list of VR-compatible applications, for convenience, divided into categories or supporting ordering by rating, alphabet, date or price. Homido Center also offers photos and videos in 3D and 360°.

However, using Homido Center is not at all necessary, because the application somehow links to the App Store, Google Play, YouTube or third-party sites.

Results

The helmet and glasses from Homido are not inferior to their alternatives on the market of VR gadgets for smartphones. They offer all the functions required from this category of devices, have some nuances in use and, what is important, do not hit the wallet too hard.

Homido is one of the world's most popular VR headset manufacturers. Homido VR glasses are generally considered to be high quality equipment... But are they really? Are they really high quality? This review contains a detailed description and impartial assessment of this brand.

Homido headsets are made of plastic. It's hard to say anything about the design, I'm neither impressed nor shocked by their appearance... It would be fair to say that they are just ordinary. The weight of the glasses is 244 g. The device does not have a capacity button.

Homido VR virtual reality glasses have two side straps and one top strap. The side straps are very wide and flexible. Their inner side is covered with a layer of non-slip rubber, thanks to which they are securely fastened. This is the first time I've encountered such a solution, and I have to admit, I really liked it. The side straps can be adjusted, but this is not very convenient as they can easily get tangled in your hair. In my opinion, Velcro is still the best option. Homido Goggles used this solution for the top strap. While it's not particularly stretchy, it's fairly easy to mold to the curves of your head, even after the glasses are on.

The Homido device is equipped with thin (1 cm wide) soft upholstery, the main function of which is to ensure comfort of use. Unfortunately, the glasses have one major design flaw - they have a lot of hard, hard edges without any padding. The most uncomfortable part of the headset is the edge that comes into contact with your nose. Hard, plastic elements rest against the area above the upper lip, causing unpleasant discomfort and sometimes even pain. As I understand it, this issue is quite serious, because it affects usability and the willingness to return to the virtual world in a very negative way.

The glasses have a really large nose hole. Unfortunately, it is so loose that it allows light to enter the glasses, which has a negative impact on the immersion in the virtual reality world. For a design with a large nose opening, a significant disadvantage is the occurrence of water vapor on the lenses. Fortunately, the problem of blurred vision occurs quite regularly and the water evaporates quickly. The design of the glasses has large air holes. They perform well when it comes to ventilation, but provide an additional source of external light. The internal width of the glasses, at the point adjacent to the face, is 18 mm, so it is possible to wear them with thin lenses.

Homido has a dedicated space on the body combined with a mount to accommodate your phone. Using this smartphone mount is not comfortable. To make matters worse, installing a smartphone in this model of glasses is dangerous for your smartphone and can cause serious damage. Manufacturer Homido did not take care of basic safety measures, such as soft padding where the phone is installed. This ignorance has led to a high risk of scratches and other damage. The insertion point for the phone is made of hard plastic and includes a lot of hard edges. The phone is pressed tightly against the hard plastic elements, so I recommend being extremely careful when using this device.

Homido glasses have lenses with a diameter of 35 mm, which are attached using rubber seals in the form of cones. The kit includes three types of cones of different sizes. In theory, selecting the correct cone is helpful in achieving the desired level of image clarity based on the user's vision. Although I have no vision problems - to get optimal image clarity, I had to use the highest cone designed for farsighted users, which I find quite strange.

The lens can be moved to the side using a handle located on the top of the device. There are buttons on one side of the device that allow you to increase the distance between the lens and your eyes. The manufacturer has not provided an explanation for this solution, but it can be easily calculated to help provide the necessary
standing to wear regular glasses while using virtual reality glasses. I would like to highlight the fact that other VR devices allow you to increase the distance between the lens and the phone screen, while in Homido Goggles the distance between the lens and the phone is fixed, only the position of the lens relative to the eyes can be adjusted.

The lens is of good quality, but up close the image appears extremely blurry. The field of view is relatively wide, but to be honest I wasn't impressed with it. This may be a result of me expecting something truly unusual. Overall, many users were delighted with the amazing optics of this device. To be honest, this is pretty average quality for me. The dense frame of the device is clearly visible when using Goggles, which significantly limits the viewing angle. We estimate that the Homido FOV has an angle of no greater than 91°.

To sum it up:

The Homido VR Headset is a piece of equipment made from plastic materials with wide and comfortable head straps. Ease of use is sharply reduced due to the hard and sharp edges that are pressed into the face (mainly above the upper lip). One of the biggest drawbacks of Homido Goggles is its flawed phone mounting system, which is dangerous for your device due to the lack of any safety measures or scratch protection. The FOV is around 91°, so that's a good result. The glasses do not have a capacitive button, which in my opinion should be standard at this price point.

  • High price
  • Poor phone mount
  • No buttons
  • Not bad lenses
  • Quality of materials

VR headsets are still perceived as something futuristic, but in reality they are quite affordable devices for every smartphone owner. Of course, there are very expensive models and even VR glasses. But we dedicated this short review to one of the most affordable options – homido vr. This is the helmet with which you should start getting acquainted with virtual reality.

Homido vr has similar characteristics to the Fibrum helmet, but has a more affordable price. Both fall somewhere between the most basic Google Cardboard and the near-perfect Samsung Gear VR. Now let's take a closer look at the Homido vr helmet.

Specifications

So, what are the features and technical characteristics of Homido VR:

  1. The image is displayed on the smartphone screen
  2. Suitable smartphones with a diagonal from 4 to 5.7 inches.
  3. Compatible with devices that support VR headset applications.
  4. The viewing angle is 100 degrees.
  5. It is possible to adjust the focal length.
  6. Rubberized straps.
  7. Weight 195 g.
  8. Interpupillary distance adjustment is available. Vision will not deteriorate during use.

The technical specifications are not impressive, but for this money it is difficult to find something better. I'm pleased with the light weight and the ability to fine-tune the helmet. Meanwhile, Fibrum is better suited for watching video due to its wider viewing angle.

What is in the box?

The box itself is quite compact, it contains all the important information about the device, and in Russian! Inside you will find a convenient case in which you can carry your homido helmet. Despite the relatively low cost of the gadget, the manufacturer did not skimp on accessories.

Inside the case there is the homido vr itself, a small napkin for servicing the helmet, a leaflet with up-to-date information and a user manual. Includes 3 pairs of lens holders. There is a spare foam nozzle.

Different lens holders are designed for users with different vision conditions. Holders for users with normal vision are inserted inside; there are options for farsighted and nearsighted people. A confident “5” for the complete package.

Design

Unlike google cardboard, design is not a cost-saving issue for homido vr. The helmet is a plastic box with straps, equipped with a comfortable foam attachment and two lenses. The design is made in the spirit of minimalism, but the helmet looks quite nice.

Functional

Comfortable leather straps are adjusted to each person, the helmet does not fall and looks reliable. In addition to multiple lens holders, there is fine adjustment for vision. Using small wheels on the outside, you can adjust the picture to maximum clarity.

At the front there is a plastic clip for a smartphone. After securing the smartphone in the compartment, there is no feeling that the smartphone is about to fall out, as is the case with other cheap helmets.

The homido virtual reality helmet does not use electricity; everything is controlled mechanically. We will not find any functional buttons in it; all control will be carried out exclusively via a smartphone. For some this is convenient, for others it is not, but such simplicity significantly expands the list of smartphones compatible with the helmet.

Applications

As mentioned above, the helmet can be controlled and video settings can only be done via a smartphone. With Homido VR you can use almost any application and play VR games designed for other headsets and glasses. For example, you can install programs for google cardboard and competitive Fibrum.

It is worth remembering that not all applications synchronize normally with this helmet, so you will have to use the “scientific poke method” or use a special application - Homido Center (the company has replaced it with VR Center).

Homido Center contains a lot of VR content compatible with the Homido VR helmet. An extremely useful application that is worth installing first.

Homido center

Homido Center cannot be called a VR application in the full sense of the word. Homido center is a directory where you can select applications that are suitable for your helmet. You can download it for both iOS and Android (the set of applications for these OSes is different).

On the main page of homido center you will see a set of recommended applications for homido vr. For the most part, these are small applications and demo games that will allow you to get acquainted with virtual reality. Runner games are very common. Often you need to run, collect coins and dodge obstacles. All control is carried out by head movements. There are more interesting applications and videos that are definitely worth checking out.

The homido center menu is built quite conveniently. All content is divided into categories and finding the game or application you are interested in is not difficult. There is a section “360°/3D photos and videos”. Everything is clear with the photo, but the video is very interesting. Through homido center you can easily find a video that will completely immerse you in the atmosphere of virtual reality. For example, a 360-degree video allows you to find yourself in a New York bar and look around, turning your head left and right.

Rating 5

Advantages: Lightweight, excellent ventilation of lenses during use, sits comfortably on the head

Disadvantages: The softening pad has come off, glasses do not fit on a large head

Comment: Overall, I liked the glasses, I often use them to watch VR content.

Rating 5

Advantages: comfortable, lightweight, easy to adjust to any head size, interpupillary distance can be adjusted

Disadvantages: it’s not very convenient to insert the phone, the clamp is too strong (on the other hand, this is a plus, as the phone definitely won’t fall out)
I haven't found any other shortcomings yet

Comment: I wish there was a choice of colors, for a girl black is a little boring

Rating 5

Advantages: 1.very light. Not tired after long time use
2.lenses do not fog up. Many helmets have lenses that fog up and you don’t really want to wipe them every five minutes. There is no such thing here.
3. there is an adjustment of the distance between the eyes - a cool feature, because you can adjust it for a child, for example
4.bonus - a set for people with low vision. Of course it was not useful to me, since my eyesight is good

Disadvantages: appearance. Not the most beautiful in appearance, but the quality is better. The new helmet is very beautiful, but it doesn’t seem to be on sale yet

Comment: I really like watching 360 degree videos, I often take it with me when visiting, I can surprise my friends during get-togethers))

Zakharov Roman October 24, 2016, Moscow \Using experience: several months

Advantages: - high-quality lenses, in fact, lenses are very important, in Homido the eyes get tired much slower than in similar ones
- the frame that adheres to the eye area is soft
- there are many adjustments
- feels quite comfortable on the head
-can be used with glasses and there are also lenses included for different vision (most Chinese models that I looked at do not allow this)
-also, the placement of the lenses feels more typical for a European person (either the width is chosen correctly, or something else)
- durable and tactilely pleasant plastic
-suitable for most phone models
- have their own application
-there is a case)))
-ventilation (lenses do not fog up)

Disadvantages: - I would like the price, of course, lower
- a tight phone holder (probably made so that it doesn’t fall out)

Comment: Comfortable glasses for watching various videos and playing games, convenient to carry with you, as there is a case.
With friends we arrange games, like in childhood, when we had a console))) A fun toy, I recommend purchasing it

Mikhalchuk Stas October 22, 2016, Minsk \Using experience: less than a month

Rating 5

Advantages: I have experience using VR glasses, including GEAR VR....
obvious advantages of these glasses:
1.Has a useful set of native mobile applications (Homido Center, Homido Player)
2. Availability of an additional set of frames for nearsighted and farsighted people
3. The presence of an interpupillary distance setting, which allows you to adjust Homido to different smartphone screen sizes, and is also more anatomically suitable for children.

Disadvantages: no choice of glasses colors
There is no remote control included, you have to buy it separately

Comment: Like other VR helmets, there are pros and cons, which is understandable, because... you can't please everyone...
I really liked using the helmet in conjunction with augmented reality games; at the moment it is sometimes even more interesting than VR.
And of course you need an excellent screen to enjoy the image...
As a wish, add a program for streaming video from a PC to the standard software package and it will be great... and of course more interesting games, possible with Wii-level graphics, the main thing is interesting gameplay... and if a set of games similar to WII Fit appears overall awesome...
PS... well, if you build a power bank into the structure of the glasses (light and not very large), then you can use the glasses for a long time...
