Huawei Y6 Pro review: a smartphone with pitfalls. Huawei Y6 - Specifications Sound and communications

A $200 smartphone? - You need to go to that department where your eyes are getting more and more dizzy. Manufacturers are trying very hard to succeed here, because the price segment is really very massive. There are some angrier and more glamorous ones here. Today we have a device from the second category. Let's quickly see what kind of animal this is.

What is this?

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a large (5.7" display diagonal) budget Android smartphone in a plastic case. Nowadays, you don’t need to add that it is “almost full-screen” (18x9 aspect ratio), but it is important to note that it does not have bangs/unibrow.

Why is he interesting?

First, we need to clarify that the word Prime in the title is very important. If we remove it, we get a completely different model. Younger and already clearly budget: 2 GB of RAM, 16 permanent memory, without a fingerprint scanner, and with a worse front camera. But there are no external differences, except for the golden version of the body color (black and blue are also found). This is exactly what we came across: it is immediately clear that this is a model with the Prime title.

Here's something a little more solid. The screen resolution, as in the younger model, is 1440x720, but the RAM is already 3 GB, and the permanent one is 32 GB. The device is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 (MSM8917) platform - a quad-core processor with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. 3000 mAh battery, microUSB connector, fingerprint scanner on the rear panel... Boring? Prime also has more interesting features. Front flash, full tray for 2 SIM + 1 MicroSD, face unlock function, dual camera... Stop. It's not double. It seemed? Let's take a closer look.

What is in the box?

There is nothing unnecessary in the box. In addition to the smartphone itself - a charger, a cable and a paper clip. Jokes aside, but a paperclip is a really necessary thing. There is still no standard for the holes for removing the SIM card tray, and a pushpin, which can be used to easily open the tray in the iPhone, does not fit into the hole in the Huawei Y6 Prime, tested. So don't lose the paperclip. And be careful with the card tray, it's as long as a French baguette.

The nice thing is that a neat protective film is already glued to the screen for constant wearing. The unpleasant thing: it is more of a film than glass, and scratches quite easily. And also - no headset included (but it will be in commercial supplies, I just had no luck with the sample).

What does it look like?

More expensive than it is. Although this is a subjective assessment. But precisely because of the peculiarities of its appearance, it may seem that there is a double camera here. Its lens and flash are covered by a black elongated module, exactly the same as the one behind which it is customary to install two lenses in more expensive models (the same Y7 Prime). But here he is alone. In addition to this module, on the rear panel there is a “dot” of the second microphone and a traditional round fingerprint scanner.

The frames around the edges of the screen are quite thin. At the top of the front panel there is an LED indicator, a light sensor (which pretends to be a second front camera), the front camera itself, an earpiece and a discreet selfie flash. The front camera is also used to unlock the smartphone when face is recognized. After pressing the power button and before the face is recognized, you can see the corresponding inscription on the screen.

Below the screen there is only a mirrored manufacturer's logo; all control buttons are drawn on the screen itself. On the bottom edge there are the most banal (like everyone else) round slots for a microphone and speaker on the sides of the MicroUSB connector. On the right is the power button and volume rocker, on the left is only the card tray, and on the top end is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. So far, fortunately, only flagships are abandoning it, as well as MicroUSB - in favor of Type C.

Everything is plastic, but assembled conscientiously, nothing creaks or wobbles. The roundness of the shape and the glossy mirror bezel around the perimeter of the device generally make it a kind of glamorous thing. At least this white and gold version. For some reason, I remembered the iPhone of the first three generations; their polished metal frame produced a similar impression.

How good is the screen?

Once upon a time, a 5.7-inch screen was considered huge, but nowadays it is just big. For some reason, programs that display the characteristics of the device get confused and determine the diagonal to be 5.9”, but the ruler confirms: 5.7. Despite the relatively low resolution, the pixels are invisible, and viewing angles are fine. The maximum brightness is 345.131 cd/m2, black field brightness is 0.393 cd/m2, contrast is 878:1. Not bad performance, but the color gamut is a little disappointing and the screen is a bit cold. However, this is not the first time we have encountered such a feature of Huawei displays. Let me remind you that the measurements were taken with default parameters; if desired, the color can be adjusted in the settings.

What about performance, autonomy, sound?

The Snapdragon 425 processor is an old and proven option for budget employees. More than one generation has been built on it. Here you can find Xiaomi with the Redmi 4 and 5 A series, Samsung J-series, E5-e Moto, and many other models. Performance is predictable. The benchmark numbers are disappointingly low, but in real life there's not much to complain about. The interface works quickly, simple toys work without problems. Something a little heavier like NFS: No Limits or Minecraft (a world with many objects) is also running, although not as quickly as demanding players would like.

Let me remind you that the Prime model has exclusively 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM. Normal for the modern average person. There is Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only), Bluetooth, GPS/GLONASS - standard set. There are no frills like NFC or infrared remote control. The most attentive readers will argue that there should be NFC, but our modification with the ATU-L31 index does not have this chip. But it is only available in the ATU-L11 version; I can’t say anything about its supply to our market. But I can wish Huawei to quickly purchase modern Wi-Fi modules, because this story with the lack of support for the five-gigahertz range in almost all devices except flagships has been going on for a long time and it’s time to solve it.

But there is FM radio. By the way, let's note the sound. The marketing campaign for this device mentions a particularly loud speaker that produces "up to 88 dB." Indeed, subjectively it sounds louder than average. At the same time, at maximum volume it does not wheeze and quite accurately handles higher frequencies. Bass transmission is understandably worse. But still, for voicing gatherings in the absence of other speakers, it is better suited than most “classmate devices”.

Although this figure of 88 decibels is disturbing, let’s check. We take a device for comparison (in our case it’s an iPhone 8), on it and on the experimental one we alternately play the same works from the repertoire of Metallica and AC/DC. We measure the noise level with a third smartphone using a software sound level meter from the Smart Tools package at a distance of 2 cm from the speaker. We calculate the average values and compare. Y6 Prime produced 84 dB at its peak, with an average of 79. The opponent got 83 and 78, respectively. Dry numbers say that the speaker is hardly head and shoulders louder than everyone else around. But it's still loud. And you can make it even louder in the “Party” mode, for which you will need at least one more smartphone of the same type: they will “sing in chorus.”

The battery is average, 3000 mAh, this is a common capacity. The device removed from charging in the morning by 10 pm shows 50-60% charge. With average usage. Just don’t ask what is included in it, you won’t get it right anyway. If you use it less intensively, you can do without charging for two days. Even more is possible, especially if you use the maximum energy saving mode. This function, familiar from other Huawei devices, turns the smartphone into a dialer, turning off everything non-essential and reducing the brightness of the screen backlight to a minimum. In an extreme situation, when there is absolutely nowhere to recharge, it can help and is useful.

What about the firmware and interface?

Here we have Android 8.0 Oreo with the EMUI 8 shell. Nothing radically new, desktops and folders are like in iPhones, like most Chinese competitors. However, those who wish can display applications on a separate screen; this option is available in the settings. EMUI has its own versions of popular features like clearing memory, reducing the visible screen area for one-handed operation, and optimizing performance. For each of the two SIM cards, you can configure a separate ringtone, forwarding settings, allow or prohibit data transfer in general or only in roaming. There are a number of interesting little things like the “in your pocket” mode (which increases the ringer volume when the phone is in your pocket), the ability to hang up a call with the power button, or the Bluetooth modem mode (in addition to the usual Wi-Fi hotspot function). There is a vision protection mode (blue filter), it can be turned on automatically according to a schedule (but you cannot say “turn on after sunset”, as in MIUI). I won’t go into detail about the shell; it was recently written about in reviews or.

The top curtain with notifications seems to be the same as everyone else's. But in Huawei devices, it can traditionally be pulled out without touching the screen, but by swiping from top to bottom along the fingerprint scanner. And by tapping on it, you can clear read notifications in this curtain. Personally, I find this solution very convenient: every time you switch from a Huawei smartphone to another device with the same rear scanner, at first you curse at the function not working. A number of types of special alerts that are irrelevant for our market are supported: emergency, “serious danger”, AMBER alert and non-disabled (!) “presidential notifications”. It’s interesting how often the latter come to smartphone owners in their homeland.

Another feature of the device is face recognition unlocking. The trend set in the iPhone X has already reached the two hundred dollar segment. This function works quite stably and from any angle, that is, the phone can be held upside down, the main thing is that the face falls into the frame of the front camera. But recognition does not always happen instantly; you have to get used to it. If you grimace, your face will not be recognized. I don’t have a twin brother; I couldn’t check this aspect of security.

How are things going with the camera?

As we already understood, the main camera is single. Its matrix is 13-megapixel, while the front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. Both cameras are equipped with flashes (both are also single). For lovers of self-portraits, the presence of a backlight on the front panel is a clear plus. They also have a “perfect selfie” function. In this mode, you can adjust the oval of the face, eye size and lighting parameters. In my opinion, a good way to make yourself look like an alien, nothing more. There is a now traditional setting for correcting skin defects (called “decoration mode”) and stickers (“watermark”) with a date, place, weather or all sorts of pictures, which are now proudly called “elements of augmented reality.” The shooting interface is quite simple and does not offer an abundance of functions. The maximum video resolution is FullHD, there is no slow motion mode. I didn’t find a timelapse either, but there is a panorama.

In this review, we will look at a new affordable device from the famous Chinese corporation Huawei. The phone was announced in the spring of 2018. A distinctive feature of Huawei y6 is its non-standard, elongated screen. In addition, this gadget is equipped with a specialized front camera designed for unlock by facial features. This trend, launched by Apple, was picked up by the Chinese and applied even in a budget phone.

Design and appearance

The form factor of the Huawei y6 is a traditional all-in-one with slightly rounded edges. The perimeter of the case is covered with a metal rim. With the help of such a visual solution, two problems are solved at once. Firstly, the device becomes more durable, and secondly, with such a frame it looks stylish. It is worth praising the back of the phone: the cover is not removable, but its coating is quite non-staining. No fingerprints or smears left on the back, this is very important in cases where the gadget is used without additional protection. However, if fingerprints do remain, they will be easy to clean.

Most of the front surface is occupied by the display. The frames of the Huawei y6 smartphone are very thin and visually almost invisible. The enlargement of the screen has led to the fact that in front there was no place for physical buttons. All front panel controls are virtual. At the bottom, under the display, there is a company logo. The back cover looks less saturated, there is only a camera with a flash. There is a speaker located on the side, at the bottom of the device. There is also a standard microUSB input.

On top there is a microphone and a plug where you can connect headphones. The smartphone, thanks to its well-chosen dimensions, fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, it is easy and pleasant to use. Colors available are gold, blue and black.

Huawei y6 2018

Screen Features

A review of Huawei y6 cannot be complete without describing the advantages of the display. The 2018 smartphone should have a large screen: this is one of the fundamental trends. The model has 5.7 inch display, which in modern realities can be considered almost compact in size. The S-IPS matrix has a resolution of 1440x720p. The aspect ratio is 18x9. The top of the display is covered with convex glass made using 2.5D technology. The colors are a little oversaturated. However, the gamma can be adjusted to your taste, this option is present. Screen brightness is not impressive, although it is quite sufficient for indoor use.

Important! The viewing angle is one of the advantages of the device in question; it is almost maximum here. Even at the maximum tilt, the colors do not fade and hardly change.

Memory and performance

The technical parameters of the device look attractive, especially for the budget segment. A quad-core chip from Qualcomm, SD425, is responsible for performance; Adreno 308 is responsible for graphics.

The characteristics of Huawei y6 look even more attractive against the backdrop of synthetic tests. In benchmarks, the smartphone demonstrates a strong and confident average level. Of course, you shouldn’t expect miracles with such hardware, but all modern games will run on medium-low settings. The installed hardware is quite enough for everyday use.. No freezes or slowdowns were noticed during operation. The shell works quickly, applications launch with minimal delay. For a device with 2 gigabytes of RAM on board, these are very good indicators.

operating system

By default, Android version 8.0 is installed on your smartphone. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to try Google’s “bare” operating system. Huawei promotes on its devices branded shell calledEMUI. This is another popular trend these days: most major players in the mobile market are trying to promote not just a gadget, but an entire system built on its own shell. Essentially, it is an add-on to the Android OS.

EMUI 8 version works quite quickly. Graphically, the shell looks attractive. The design style is made in a somewhat boring material design, but this is rather a general trend and a matter of taste. Those who like to customize their workspace always have a ton of branded themes and launchers at their disposal. Overall, the operating system can be described as easy to learn and enjoyable to use.

Important! The proprietary shell from Huawei does not take up much space and has a very modest appetite for the volume of updates. This is a big plus, considering that competitors have a strong consumption of, often limited, traffic.

Battery and autonomy

The phone has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3000mAh. Claimed power without difficulty enough for one working day of use. When optimizing the load, the device lives for a day. You shouldn't count on more; even with the screen brightness turned up to 50 percent, the phone doesn't last more than one day.

Important! It is worth noting the excellent optimization of the operating system. The shell does not load the CPU and battery, which has a beneficial effect on battery life and performance.

The device is charged from a regular microUSB port. Wireless charging is not provided. The big disadvantage is lack of fast charging support. As a rule, the small amount of battery capacity is compensated by this function.

Call and sound quality

The Huawei y6 phone is equipped with very powerful antenna. Of course, somewhere in the subway or among concrete floors the signal may get lost. On level terrain, clear and reliable reception is always ensured. There are no complaints about the microphone. The subscriber and the interlocutor can hear each other perfectly during a conversation. Also phone good signal reception 3G. The speed of receiving and sending Internet traffic greatly depends on the operator to which the device is connected.

One of the main features of the 2018 Huawei Y6 is the loud speaker. Clear and spacious sound is perfectly perceived both up close and at a distance. At maximum volume, the device produces a sound volume of 88 dB. And this does not in any way affect the quality of the output sound. Another innovation is proprietary utilityHUAWEI Histen, working on the principle of an equalizer, adjusting the sound to certain patterns in a theater or concert hall, etc.

Interesting fact: if you play the same track on several identical models, they will reproduce true surround sound.

Camera Specifications

Like its predecessor, Huawei y6 II, released in 2016, the 2018 revision can take quite good pictures. The main camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels and a very powerful LED flash. In addition, there is phase detection autofocus– a rather rare guest in budget models.

The device does not surprise you with its camera settings; everything here is quite standard. The number of shooting modes is also traditional. However, the available capabilities are sufficient for everyday tasks.

In this version, unlike the Huawei y6 phoneIIThe main focus is on the front camera. Its resolution is 5 megapixels. In essence, not much by modern standards, but great for selfies. Pleasantly surprised by the presence special flash for creating a successful self-portrait.

The front photo module operates in two modes: automatic and intelligent. In the second case, it is possible to change the background and apply additional filters. The number of settings for improving the quality of a photo portrait will pleasantly surprise all those who like to take pictures of themselves on their phones.

Important! A special feature of the front camera is the ability to recognize the owner for unlocking. Reconciliation occurs using several algorithms, so the error is small, although it is present.

Conclusion

The Huawei y6 smartphone turned out to be a worthy logical continuation of the line launched in 2016. Let's summarize all the pros and cons.

  • bright screen;
  • stylish body;
  • wonderful build;
  • owner recognition;
  • fast operation of the graphical shell;
  • fits well in the hand;
  • good camera;
  • affordable price.
  • no fingerprint scanner;
  • only 16 GB of internal memory;
  • heats up and freezes when launching several powerful applications (for example, not all modern games will launch)

You can buy a smartphone in all major retail chains in the country. The model has good reviews and is in wide demand, so it is quite common. The average price of the device is is 8,799 rubles. Despite some compromises (no fingerprint sensor, little space, only 2 GB of RAM), the device is built on a good processor. In everyday life, the gadget shows good results; it is unpretentious, well assembled and fits perfectly in the hands.

Huawei y6 2018

The Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 smartphone is a large budget smart phone. This model is a “premium version” of the Huawei Y6 mobile device, which has more modest characteristics. As for the Prime version, it has a fairly adequate and affordable price (the price of a smartphone is almost $200), has a presentable appearance, and acceptable technical characteristics.

The Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 phone has a typical appearance for modern smartphones. On the front of the smartphone there is a large 5.7-inch screen with thin frames. Above it you can see a light sensor, front camera, earpiece, LED event indicator, and selfie flash

The back side of the mobile device has rather laconic equipment. In the upper left corner, in an oblong black frame, there is a camera lens, which is adjacent to an LED light bulb.

In the center at the top there is a microphone responsible for the noise reduction function. Just below it is a round fingerprint scanner. Under the display you can only find the silver logo of the manufacturer. Virtual control buttons are placed in the screen frame.

The front camera of the device is also designed to recognize the owner's face.

On the right side of the Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 there are power and volume buttons. On the left is a combined card tray (2 SIM cards and one memory expansion card). At the top you can see a 3.5 audio jack for connecting headphones or a headset. At the bottom there is a MicroUSB for synchronizing the device with a computer and charging the gadget. On the sides of it there are slots for the main speaker and a conversational microphone.

Design and ergonomics

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, which is reviewed in this article, is made entirely of plastic. However, it is worth noting the build quality. There are no backlashes, the plastic does not creak, all elements of the body are well secured. The rounded shape and glossy bezel located around the perimeter of the gadget add some extravagance to the smartphone.

As for the design of the device, it is worth adding that the gadget has three color options: black, gold and dark blue. The mobile phone fits quite well in the hand. It is quite convenient to control the functions of the device with one hand.

The mobile device weighs 150 grams and has rather modest dimensions (152.4 x 73 x 7.8). The hand does not get tired even when using the phone for a long time, and the rounded corners do not cause discomfort.

Display

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is equipped with an IPS display with a diagonal of 5.7 inches, an aspect ratio of 18 to 9, and a resolution of 1440 by 720 ppi.

The relatively low resolution is compensated by well-adjusted contrast and natural colors. The device's display has acceptable brightness levels. This allows you to comfortably use your phone outdoors. However, in sunny weather, or under extremely bright lighting conditions, the brightness reserve may not be enough. The mobile phone is equipped with an automatic brightness adjustment option.

For a budget phone, the Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 screen has acceptable viewing angles. Contrast changes are only possible with excessive diagonal deviations.

A number of fine display settings are provided for users. For example, manually setting the color temperature, or activating the option to protect the eyes from excessive strain. In this case, the blue filter is turned on, which reduces the strain on the eyes of the user of the device. The gadget has an option to automatically reduce the display resolution. This allows you to increase the autonomy of the mobile device.

Equipment

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 has a rather modest package. In addition to the instruction manual and warranty cards, in the box you can find:

  • a paperclip designed to remove the card tray from the device body;
    charger unit;
  • USB cable.

The mobile phone does not come with a standard headset.

Specifications Huawei Y6 Prime 2018

The characteristics of Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 allow you to comfortably use your mobile device to solve everyday problems. The phone also handles multitasking well. This is facilitated by 3GB of RAM.

For data storage, 32 GB of permanent flash memory is provided, of which 24.79 GB is available. If this is not enough, you can use a microSD memory expansion card. The smartphone allows you to install additional memory up to 256GB, which is quite enough to store a solid library of films, audio and other multimedia.

Thanks to the presence of a corresponding connector in the tray, users have the opportunity to install 2 SIM cards and microSD. By the way, not every luxury mobile device can boast of this.

Performance

As for the performance of Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, it has rather mediocre performance. The “brain” of the device is Qualcomm Snapdragon 425. This processor model does not have high performance and is considered outdated. It has four Cortex-A53 cores that can be clocked at 1.4 GHz. The Adreno 308 chip plays the role of the smartphone's graphics accelerator. This means that you can forget about highly demanding 3D applications and games when using a mobile device.

In AnTuTu, Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 scored 46431 points, which is quite good for a budget smartphone.

With a large number of running programs, animations may slow down; in addition, the launch of the applications themselves cannot be called instantaneous. If 2-3 light programs are running on the smartphone, then there are no problems with the smoothness of animations and performance.

A mobile device is not capable of handling heavy games and applications. However, casual games launch and run quite well on this device.

Huawei Y6 Prime also has a less powerful version - with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. This version of the device produces more modest performance in synthetic tests.

For a budget smartphone, the Huawei Y6 Prime camera has good performance and speed.

Cameras

The main camera of Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is equipped with an LED flash, a module with a resolution of 13 megapixels, and an f/2.2 aperture.

Photo

As for pictures taken from the main camera, provided there is good lighting, the photographs have good clarity, high detail and acceptable color rendition. Autofocus occurs almost instantly. However, the picture changes dramatically if you take photographs in conditions of insufficiently high visibility. Photos lose detail and color.

In addition, noise appears in photographs, which is most noticeable when photographing with flash. In general, the quality of photos taken with Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 can be called acceptable.

The dynamic range of the resulting images is average. Activating the HDR option (a function for improving image quality) does not particularly affect the situation.

As for the standard camera application, it is practically no different from those installed on other smartphones. By swiping to the left, the user can select shooting modes, and by swiping to the right, he can make “fine” camera settings.

Video

As for recording videos, the module is capable of recording videos in FullHD quality (1920×1080). This model does not implement the electronic stabilization function. The video is shot at 30 frames per second.

Front-camera

The front camera module has a resolution of 8 megapixels and an f/2.0 aperture. Features of the front-facing camera include the presence of a tone flash, as well as the AR Lens function, thanks to which you can instantly change the background of a photo. In addition, the front camera of Huawei Y6 Prime has an option to unlock the smartphone by the owner’s face.

Sound and music playback quality

Huawei Y6 Prime, despite the budget status of the model, has fairly decent sound. The smartphone is equipped with two speakers with a power of 88 dB and has a high volume reserve. There is also an equalizer with advanced settings and a group music function. The sound coming from the speakers is clear, but you have to forget about the bass.

The smartphone has three different music listening modes:

  1. Near – all parameters become averaged, and sound preamplification is slightly reduced. This mode is optimal for listening to music through headphones.
  2. Front – in this mode, the conversational and main speakers work as multimedia speakers. For a more complete immersion, it is recommended to place the phone horizontally. At the same time, the “home theater” effect does not add bassiness to the sound.
  3. Wide mode – the sound sounds along with superimposed built-in reverb and delay effects. This makes the sound spatial and voluminous (“concert hall” mode).

Huawei Y6 Prime is equipped with a karaoke mode, as well as an option that allows you to output sound from your smartphone to the speakers of other mobile devices. In total, up to 8 smartphones can be connected to Huawei Y6 Prime simultaneously as speakers.

There are no complaints about the sound of the Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 - the sound is clear, moderately loud and distinct. When talking with your interlocutor, there is no extraneous noise or interference.

Communication capabilities

The communication capabilities of the mobile device are realized using Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth: 4.2, A2DP, LE modules. The device is equipped with a GPS navigation system along with A-GPS, GLONASS. Also included in the top-end configuration of the gadget is an NFC module. The smartphone has a built-in radio receiver.
Communication is supported by GSM, HSPA and LTE technologies.

operating system

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 runs on Android operating system version 8.0. The software's capabilities allow users to personalize the device.

The EMUI shell can remember the actions of the gadget owner, and automatically adjusts various device settings to suit them. The navigation button allows you to use the device with one hand, and the option to split the display into two parts allows you to keep two windows of running applications open at the same time. The process of taking a screenshot is quite simple - the user needs to swipe down with three fingers on the gadget’s display.

The operating system features include some pre-installed programs. Among the standard software, it is worth highlighting the built-in photo and video editor, as well as a text editor.

Autonomy

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is equipped with a fairly capacious battery – 3000 mAh. As for the operating time of the gadget, it directly depends on the mode of use of the smartphone. With a 4G connection turned on and the display turned on at full brightness, the phone lasted 4.5 hours.

When connected to the Internet via a Wi-Fi module, with the screen turned on at full brightness, the device worked for almost 6 hours, which can be called a very good indicator for the battery.

With less intensive use of the phone, the battery can last from one and a half to two days without recharging.

To ensure minimal battery consumption, you can activate the appropriate mode. In this mode, the gadget can work for several days. Maximum energy saving is relevant in conditions in which it is impossible to timely recharge a mobile phone. For example, when going on a picnic for several days, or going on a hike.

Pros and cons of a smartphone

User reviews of Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 indicate that the gadget has both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of the device include:

  1. Modern and ergonomic design;
  2. Possibility of simultaneous use of two SIM cards and a memory expansion card up to 256 GB;
  3. Loud and high-quality speaker;
  4. A large number of communication interfaces;
  5. A convenient and intuitive operating system with a large number of fine settings.
  6. Correctly working face recognition option, backlight for the selfie camera, fingerprint scanner.
  7. High quality mobile phone build.
  8. Capacious battery.
  9. Built-in video, photo and text editor.
  10. Large and high quality display.
  11. Price.

The disadvantages of a mobile device include:

  1. Low performance.
  2. Lack of optical zoom, long camera startup time.
  3. Built-in battery.
  4. Lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi module.
  5. Relatively low amount of RAM and permanent memory.
  6. Lack of a standard headset included with the smartphone.
  7. "Plastic" body design.
  8. Difficulties arise when selecting a case for the device.
  9. Lack of oleophobic coating on standard screen protector film.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, a reliable and inexpensive balanced workhorse.

Comparison with competitors

The cost of a mobile device, depending on the version, varies from 8 to 11 thousand rubles. Competitors of Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 are represented by many models, of which the following should be highlighted:

  • Meizu M6s

This model has a similar screen diagonal, but it is placed in a metal frame. The smartphone also has a more powerful six-core processor.

The device supports fast charging option, and its price is almost the same as Huawei Y6 Prime 2018.

  • Honor 7A Pro

The features of this device are a brighter and larger display, louder and clearer sound. The device is equipped with new software and a more capacious battery.

  • Alcatel 3X

The phone is equipped with a dual main camera with modules of 13 and 5 megapixels, respectively. The front camera has a face recognition option. However, at a similar price to the Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, the model has a less powerful processor and support for memory cards only up to 128 GB.

  • LG K9

The model supports memory expansion up to 2 TB and has a clear and rich five-inch display. However, it is equipped with a less capacious battery and camera modules with lower resolution.

  • Asus Zenfone Live L1

The phone is distinguished by its compact size and a capacious battery that can last up to 29 hours in talk mode.

Final review

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is one of the successful models of budget smartphones in 2018. The functionality of the device and its technical characteristics allow you to comfortably solve everyday problems.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is not without its shortcomings. The most significant are the modest performance and the lack of a standard headset included with the device. However, among the smartphones located in this price segment, the Y6 Prime rightfully takes its rightful place.

How much can you, Huawei? Anyone who follows the company’s activities may ask this question - after all, in the last month alone we were shown five new smartphones (, and a series). And next up is the Huawei Y6 (2018) - it’s more budget-friendly than other new products, but no less interesting in its details.

The new product is offered in blue, black and gold colors.

The appearance is simple and a little boring. On the back panel there is a single camera with a flash and a logo (there is no fingerprint scanner here). At the front there is a 5.7-inch HD+ display with almost no side bezels and small top and bottom stripes. On top there is a front camera with face unlock function.

The cameras are nothing impressive, but are equipped with classic Huawei functionality. For example, the 5-megapixel front camera supports AR processing of future selfies with backgrounds and masks, as well as creating studio lighting effects. The rear sensor has a resolution of 13 megapixels. Other stuffing included: an entry-level Snapdragon 450 chip, a 3000 mAh battery, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of expandable storage space.

The smartphone's multimedia capabilities, especially its audio capabilities, are interesting. The external speaker of Huawei Y6 (2018) is capable of playing music at 88 dB, which is quite good - as the manufacturers themselves say, the tracks sound high quality, but are almost 80% louder than on previous devices. We also introduced Huawei's own Histen technology, which allows us to simulate the sound of a recording in different environments - for example, in a theater or at a concert. And one more feature is synchronization with other similar smartphones for simultaneous listening to the same songs from different devices.

How much you will have to spend to buy Huawei Y6 (2018) is still unclear, but the Y series already indicates the budget status of the device. But in addition to the price, some characteristics, such as camera parameters, are also undisclosed, so the full picture will still have to wait. But it is already known that the smartphone will officially reach Russia. Just when exactly?

Sales start date is hidden Price unknown

Huawei Y6 2018 at first glance seems to be a slightly enlarged copy of the model. But in fact, there are quite a lot of differences, ranging from a different SoC to better cameras. However, this is not the only thing that distinguishes the tested smartphone from its younger relative. For example, already during the initial examination, you can notice that the test subject has a second microphone, as well as a dedicated system speaker, which the more affordable one does not have. But, as our testing has shown, the differences do not end there.

Appearance

Externally, Huawei Y6 2018 is barely noticeably different from the smaller one. If you do not make a direct comparison, it is quite difficult to distinguish these two smartphones. However, there are still differences. The tested smartphone is significantly thinner, and the surface of the plastic frame is not matte, but glossy. In addition, there is a second microphone in the area of the camera block, and a dedicated system speaker at the bottom end.

The build quality is very high, but due to its large dimensions and rather small thickness, the smartphone gives in well when trying to twist it, but, remarkably, it does not make any sounds, and rainbow stains do not appear on the display.

At the front, above the display, there are proximity/light sensors, an earpiece, a front-facing camera and front-facing flash, and an LED status indicator. On the back side you can see a block consisting of a camera and a flash, as well as a dedicated noise-canceling microphone, which is also used for video recording.

On the left side surface, only a tray for separate installation of a pair of SIM cards and nanoSIM format media is visible. On the right side there are the usual lock and volume keys. It is worth noting that, unlike when tapping on the case, these keys do not rattle.

Only a standard audio jack is installed on top. At the bottom there is a system speaker, microphone and microUSB connector. In 2018, at the price that is being asked for the smartphone being tested, I would like to see USB Type-C here. Of course, the system-on-chip used does not allow the implementation of a USB 3.0 port, but even without this, symmetrical USB Type-C is simply more convenient to use.

Display

The smartphone uses a fairly large IPS matrix with a diagonal of 5.7 inches, a resolution of 720*1440 pixels (HD+) and, accordingly, an aspect ratio of 18:9. With such a large display and relatively low resolution, you can see the hotel dots, but you have to try hard to do this. But if we remember that the Y6 2018 is still a relatively inexpensive smartphone, then such shortcomings can be forgiven. The display supports up to 10 simultaneous touches, which is twice as many as in the case. However, we cannot say that this is a significant advantage, because often simultaneous recognition of 5 touches is more than enough for work.

The maximum brightness of the white field is 391.05 cd/m2, which is slightly lower than that of. At the same time, the brightness of the black field, on the contrary, is slightly higher – 0.397 cd/m2, which is why the final static contrast is lower – 985:1. However, the static contrast indicator is still good by smartphone standards.

The display settings only allow for color temperature adjustment. With the default settings, the color temperature is significantly elevated, the blue component significantly predominates in the color balance, and the Delta E color deviation on the gray wedge is quite large - up to 18.7, but on the primary colors (RGBCMY) it does not exceed 9.5, which is a good result for a relatively inexpensive smartphone. The gamma correction curve is quite far from the reference value.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels and an f/2.2 lens aperture. It seems that everything is the same as in . But the matrix, judging by the pictures, is completely different, and most importantly, with a large physical size, which allows you to take not too noisy pictures even under typical lighting in a living room. In low light, the smartphone is capable of taking quite good selfies with good detail, which is not what you expect from a budget solution.

Like the younger model, the test smartphone is equipped with a front LED flash. And although the flash modules of the Y6 2018 are extremely similar in appearance, their power is significantly different. The tested smartphone at a distance of 1 meter was able to provide illumination of 3.27 lux, versus a measly 1.37 lux for the younger model. But you shouldn’t be particularly happy, because the result shown is actually also extremely modest. For example, the front flash was able to produce 24.7 lux, which is currently a record figure among all smartphones we tested.

The rear flash is also more powerful than that of the younger model, and the advantage is not purely formal, but quite significant. When measured at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, a level of 33.7 lux was recorded. This is far from a record, but a very good indicator.

The rear camera is based on a 13 MP sensor and an f/2.2 aperture lens. The optics are of higher quality than in , so the blurring of corners is much less pronounced. The manufacturer claims 5-point phase detection autofocus, thanks to which the tested smartphone focuses quite quickly even in low light. The overall photo quality is higher than that of the younger model, but there are still a lot of shortcomings. To begin with, it is worth noting the rather narrow dynamic range. And everything would be fine, but if there are zones in the frame with a large difference in brightness, the automation is not able to set the exposure correctly - the pictures turn out to be either greatly overexposed, or, conversely, significantly underexposed. In principle, the HDR mode could save here, but it is not activated automatically, and to call this function you have to go to the modes menu, which is not very convenient. If there are no large differences in brightness in the frame, then in good lighting the smartphone is capable of taking frames of quite decent quality.

There is no manual mode in the settings, there is no ability to select the sensitivity level or adjust the white balance, although in frankly budget versions these functions are provided. But the test subject has a hidden trump card - the ability to transfer camera control using the Camera 2 API to third-party applications, where all standard settings are available. In addition, third-party software has the ability to shoot in RAW, which is extremely rare in budget smartphones.

To evaluate image quality, a test pattern was shot in Adobe Lightroom with a sensitivity of ISO 100-3200 in steps of 1 EV. Below are cropped fragments.

Video recording

The system-on-chip used in the smartphone for video recording is limited to 1080/30p mode. The smartphone manufacturer did not further limit the already modest video capabilities of the SoC, implementing the video recording mode to the fullest extent possible. Unlike the tested smartphone, there is no pronounced problem with blurring of the edges and corners of the image, and in general the quality of video recording is significantly higher.

Autonomous operation

Huawei Y6 2018 is equipped with a 3000 mAh battery, which may seem insufficient for such a large smartphone. But, as testing has shown, the test subject is able to work for quite a long time on one charge. In reading mode, the smartphone lasted 870 minutes, in FullHD video playback mode – 671 minutes, and 278 minutes in game mode.

The included charger is not particularly powerful - only 5 W (5V/1A), although the SoC used supports QuickCharge 2.0 fast charging technology. From 0 to 85% the battery is charged in about 127 minutes, and fully charged in 160 minutes.

Conclusion

The tested smartphone is extremely similar to the recently reviewed one, both outside and inside. But at the same time, there are a lot of differences in small but important details. For example, Huawei Y6 2018 has a second microphone and a dedicated system speaker, which is of a very high class by the standards of budget smartphones. The front camera, judging by the stated characteristics, seems to be identical, but the noise level is lower and the overall photo quality is higher. The main camera is equipped with a sensor with phase detection autofocus, and the size of the rear photo matrix is clearly larger than that of the younger model. In addition, the test subject has a much more powerful rear flash. The performance of the used system-on-chip is similar, but its energy efficiency is higher. It is also worth noting that there are modifications of the Huawei Y6 2018 with an NFC module.

Minuses:
– low torsional rigidity of the body;
– no fingerprint sensor;
– microUSB connector, which in 2018 is forgivable only for frankly cheap models;
– almost useless front flash;
– low performance at the level of the more affordable Huawei Y5 2018.
Pros:
– high contrast display;
– loud system speaker with very decent sound quality;
– a very good front camera;
– relatively powerful rear flash;
– long battery life.
