Positioning

It has become a good tradition for Samsung, as well as for other companies, to release lightweight versions of their flagships. Typically, with a 30 percent discount, you get a more compact body with a flagship design, simplified specifications, but all the software features typical of the latest generation of devices. For many people, such devices look interesting; one cannot say that they have a small audience. But we must always remember that they do not reach the sales volume of flagships, at best they come close to them. And this despite a noticeably lower cost. Perhaps the reason is that in this price group many people choose all or nothing.

An amazing situation has arisen - models with the Mini prefix are clearly inferior to the latest generation of devices in terms of hardware; they are formally cheaper. For example, in terms of hardware, the S5 Mini can be compared with the recently released Galaxy S3 Duos; these models are very similar, and the difference in price is staggering - 19,990 and 11,990 rubles. But on the S5 Mini side there is IP67 case protection, a flagship design, as well as all the latest generation software features, including a power saving mode. Perhaps, the situation here is the same as when buying things - someone is satisfied with clothes at a 50 percent discount from the old collection, while others are trying to buy only what is barely available. Both are made of the same materials, have the same logo - the design and price differ. The same thing happens in devices today.

I was very critical of the S5 Mini until I started using it, and within a few weeks my impression of the device changed dramatically. It really looks like a lightweight version of the S5 Mini, which is made quite well and performs its tasks one hundred percent. In spirit, this is a very compact, productive device for those who do not need a large screen diagonal, but require a small size and a fairly long operating time. In fact, this is a device that performs in the iPhone segment, no matter how upsetting it may be for fans of the Apple brand - in terms of sensations and positioning, everything is very similar. The relatively small screen allows you to surf the web and communicate comfortably, but it is not ideal for watching videos – the Galaxy S5 is much better in this aspect. In my opinion, for those who use a combination of tablet and phone, the S5 Mini can be the golden mean. The device has clear advantages, each of which stems from its compactness. Surprisingly, a whole class of devices has emerged on the market that compete with the iPhone in size, but at the same time offer similar characteristics, while Android flagships have gone far ahead.

Design, dimensions, control elements

You look at the picture and realize that in front of you is a complete copy of the Galaxy S5 - the same back with a hole, which was dubbed an adhesive plaster, the same body colors - black, blue, gold, white.

Compactness is the key word for the S5 Mini. Phone size – 131.1x64.8x9.1 mm, weight – 120 grams. For comparison, the Galaxy S5 is 142x72.5x8.1 mm, weight - 145 grams.

Compared to Samsung Galaxy S5

Compared to Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo

This device fits very well in my hand; it just sinks into my palm. The difference in size on paper is not very critical; in life it is noticeable with the naked eye. You can carry the phone however you like, it won’t cause any problems.

Another important point is that the device is protected from water and dust, IP67 level, just like the Galaxy S5. Owners of the flagship know that there is a lid on the bottom that covers the microUSB connector. The S5 Mini abandoned it, but this did not affect the level of protection in any way. Which is not bad for everyday use. An attempt to keep the S5 Mini in a flask at a depth of one meter was successful; the device did not leak and continued to work under water. Opening the back cover, you will see rubber inserts on it. Exactly the same protection in the S5 Mini.

On the left side there is a paired volume key and an on/off button, which also unlocks the device on the right side. As already mentioned, the microUSB connector is on the bottom end, but on the top there is a 3.5 mm connector, as well as an IR port, it is used to control various household appliances.

On the front side there is a light sensor, proximity sensor, and a 2-megapixel camera for calls. The button under the screen is mechanical, the other two keys are touch sensitive.

In terms of assembly, there are no complaints about the device; it is quite convenient and good.

Display

Screen diagonal – 4.5 inches (in S5 – 5.1 inches), resolution – 720x1080 pixels (326 ppi), screen type – SuperAMOLED. In my opinion, this screen will appeal to everyone who has worked with an iPhone or a similar-sized phone; it is difficult to switch to it from large diagonals; there is always not enough size. This is felt very strongly after the S5, not to mention the Galaxy Note 3.

The screen quality is excellent, there is no reason to look for flaws. It works well in the sun, the picture remains readable. There is excellent color rendition in the room, the ability to customize color profiles at your discretion - from bright, acidic colors to muted and natural ones. Let me remind you that the number of settings that Samsung screens have is maximum, as well as their characteristics; the company itself develops these technologies and does not sell them to third parties. With the exception of resolution, the screen in the S5 Mini is quite up to par with the latest designs, it is excellent.

From practical disadvantages - it was not very convenient for me to type text, the screen width is not very optimal - but I can say the same about the iPhone, it is even more inconvenient on it. Therefore, you can ignore this statement, I am spoiled by phones with large screen diagonals, where everything is much more comfortable.

Fingerprint scanner

The implementation is completely similar to the S5, but due to the smaller body size it is more convenient to work with. In Note 4, for example, it is almost impossible to do this on the go and with one hand; here everything is much more comfortable. The level of comfort is the same as in the iPhone, despite the fact that there is no need to make movements. Immediately you just need to swipe across the center of the screen and hit the center key. In the settings you can register up to 3 fingerprints.

Almost always the scanner works perfectly, detects the fingerprint quickly and unlocks the phone. During operation, several times I saw a message that the surface of the device was wet, I was asked to wipe it. It’s difficult to say anything special about the scanner; everything works and does not cause any complaints.

Battery and power saving modes

The phone has a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 2100 mAh (the S5 has 2800 mAh), the manufacturer specifies for the device up to 440 hours of standby time, up to 20 hours of talk time, as well as up to 10 hours of watching videos and about 60 hours of listening to music .

On paper, the results are higher than the S5, but the battery capacity is noticeably smaller. In practice, I measured the video playback time, it turned out to be 10 hours, the same video on the S5 was played for about 9.5 hours. In most modes there is almost complete parity in operating time, but the main thing is how this device works as a whole. And here a big surprise awaited me.

The smaller screen size gives a noticeable increase in the operating time of the device, so with this device, with an hour of calls, about an hour of being on the network (3G/4G/Wi-Fi), about an hour of listening to music, you can go through almost two full days. With a very intense load - a full day, at the same time, for the S5 this time with a similar load is noticeably less - by eye the difference is 20-30 percent.

Miracles of this kind do not happen, so delving into the reasons for this behavior, I found the answer - in most situations, developers made the clock frequency of a quad-core processor minimal, that is, they artificially limited its speed. This does not affect the interface in any way, you will not notice a noticeable difference, but the overall performance of the solution is almost 2 times less than in S5 in most situations. What does it mean? The answer lies in the fact that the developers considered this device aimed at a different audience - they do not constantly sit online, do not keep a dozen bookmarks open in the browser, use only typical applications (WhatsApp, Skype and the like), make a lot of calls and write. That is, something similar in usage profile to a regular phone, where the crazy performance that is required in the same games is not needed. This phone is definitely not for gaming - you can run them, but the small screen won't make the experience great.

In the phone settings, two more energy saving modes were added to the existing ones, and a quick power button was created for them. There is a regular power saving mode, in which you can limit the background operation of applications, enable gray colors for the screen (for AMOLED this is a feature - gray color consumes almost no energy). Moreover, in gray tones you can work almost anywhere, even watch videos - but it will be gray, which is not very pleasant and convenient.

I was interested to see if it was possible to live a whole day in this energy consumption mode. I managed to do this easily, you can say that the device will last for two days, but it won’t give you any pleasure. It is unlikely that there will be people who will use a screen in this color scheme. There is also one more limitation - WhatsApp and other programs that use a background connection stop working and you stop receiving messages. For social networks that Samsung and the SNS program know, as well as access permissions obtained on the phone (Facebook, Instagram, 4square, Twitter), you receive push messages from the Samsung service. That is, the energy saving mode also has a software feature - instead of push messages from different services/programs, they arrive at a certain interval from only one. This interval cannot be configured; all settings are hidden from the user. Look at the phone usage graphs in this mode.

This saving mode is good when your battery is running low, but you need all the phone's functions. Then, on 10 percent charge, you can easily live for about two hours, without denying yourself almost anything. Two hours is an active use of the device; it just can last much longer in your pocket.

The maximum power limit mode cuts down almost everything; at 15 percent of the battery charge, the phone can work in standby mode for at least a day. But, of course, it all depends on how you use it. The gray scale is also turned on, but all communications are cut off, the list of running applications is limited only to those that you have allowed, all background processes are turned off. This is a very deeply redesigned procedure, since many system functions are disabled, you will not be able to take a screenshot in this mode, many built-in options will be unavailable (but you don’t need them).

I liked this mode because when the battery runs out, by activating this mode with one touch, you can calmly live until the evening - SMS and voice will be available to you.

The device looks very, very good in terms of operating time, although everything is quite at the level of its classmates. The power saving mode is different, which can be considered unique for the SuperAMOLED screen.

Camera

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. The camera is completely identical to the Galaxy S3, it is the same type of solution. Good image quality, although not the maximum resolution. You can see examples of pictures below.

Hardware platform, memory, performance

The phone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8226 chipset, this is a mid-level solution, the quad-core processor has a maximum frequency of 1.4 GHz.

The amount of RAM is 1.5 GB (half is free after loading), the built-in memory is 16 GB. The amount of memory occupied by programs is about 4 GB. Memory card – up to 64 GB.

In synthetic tests, it is clear that the device’s performance is approximately 1.5-2 times less than that of the Galaxy S5, this is explained by the fact that such scenarios are built into this device. Fans of virtual parrots will be upset, but those who use such devices for work, on the contrary, will be delighted. The lower performance does not show up in the interface.

USB, Bluetooth, communication capabilities

Bluetooth. Bluetooth version 4.0 (LE). When transferring files to other devices that support this technology, Wi-Fi 802.11 n is used, and the theoretical transfer speed is about 24 Mbit/s. Testing the transfer of a 1 GB file showed a maximum speed of about 12 Mbit/s within three meters between devices.

The model supports various profiles, in particular Headset, Handsfree, Serial Port, Dial Up Networking, File Transfer, Object Push, Basic Printing, SIM Access, A2DP. Working with headsets does not raise any questions, everything is ordinary.

USB connection. In Android 4, for some reason, they abandoned the USB Mass Storage mode, leaving only MTP (there is also a PTP mode).

USB version – 3, data transfer speed – about 50 Mb/s.

When connected via USB, the device is recharged.

The microUSB connector also supports the MHL standard, which means that using a special cable (available at electronics stores), you can connect the phone to the TV (to the HDMI output). In fact, the standard describes the ability to connect via microUSB to HDMI. This solution looks preferable to a separate miniHDMI connector on the case.

The maximum data transfer rate in LTE is 150 Mbit/s.

WiFi. The 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac standard is supported, the operation wizard is similar to that for Bluetooth. You can remember selected networks and automatically connect to them. It is possible to set up a connection to the router in one touch; to do this, you need to press a key on the router, and also activate a similar button in the device menu (WPA SecureEasySetup). Among the additional options, it is worth noting the setup wizard; it appears when the signal is weak or disappearing. You can also set up Wi-Fi on a schedule.

802.11n also supports HT40 mode, which doubles Wi-Fi throughput (requires support from another device).

Wi-Fi Direct. A protocol that is intended to replace Bluetooth or begin to compete with its third version (which also uses Wi-Fi version n to transfer large files). In the Wi-Fi settings menu, select the Wi-Fi Direct section, the phone begins to search for devices around. We select the desired device, activate the connection on it, and voila. Now in the file manager you can view files on another device, as well as transfer them. Another option is to simply find devices connected to your router and transfer the necessary files to them; this can be done from the gallery or other sections of the phone. The main thing is that the device supports Wi-Fi Direct.

S Beam. A technology that allows you to transfer a file of several gigabytes in size to another phone in a few minutes. In fact, we see in S Beam a combination of two technologies - NFC and Wi-Fi Direct. The first technology is used to bring up and authorize phones, but the second is already used to transfer the files themselves. The creatively redesigned way to use Wi-Fi Direct is much simpler than using a connection on two devices, selecting files and so on.

IR port. Necessary for using the phone as a remote control for various household appliances. Automatically configures for almost any model of equipment.

Software features of S5 Mini

Suffice it to say that there are none - this is a complete copy of the S5, down to all programs and features - inside the Android 4.4.2 device with the latest version of TouchWiz. We have already described all the possibilities in several materials, so I will provide links to them. From what has been preserved, it is also worth noting the heart rate sensor, it is also present here.

Impression

There are no complaints about the quality of communication; this device is quite typical - loud ringing, clearly visible vibration.

The phone costs 19,990 rubles, which looks like a fairly typical offer for devices in the Mini line; last year there was the same difference between the S4 and S4 Mini. The only difference is that the Mini is arriving faster this year and has been on sale since July.

Among the competitors, the one that immediately comes to mind is that it has the same screen in diagonal and resolution, a similar chipset, but a 13-megapixel camera, which subjectively shoots worse than the one in the S5 Mini. Completely identical cost of devices. Lack of protection as such, but metal in the case - there is something to think about.

Another competitor can be called, it is second only to the camera, it is 5 megapixel, other characteristics are also very similar - the same chipset, LTE support (version with LTE).

For a slightly higher price you can purchase Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, it has IP58 protection, a 20 megapixel camera, but a 4.3-inch screen with the same resolution. The price is in the range of 21-22 thousand rubles. Quite an interesting solution that will soon receive an update, but the model will be higher in cost.

As you can see, there is plenty to choose from in this segment - every company has mini versions of flagships. Against this background, the S5 Mini looks no better or no worse, it's a question of which design you prefer, what features you need. The S5 Mini has plenty of new features, but at the same time it is a compact device - perhaps the model is suitable for those who need a phone primarily for calls, SMS, and communication. As well as all other models of this class, which are positioned approximately similarly. The model turned out, oddly enough, successful, noticeably better than the S4 Mini in its time.

The idea of releasing mini-versions of flagships definitely appeals to most vendors; for several years in a row we have been seeing similar devices on the shelves. Today it’s time to get acquainted with the mini-flagship from Samsung – GalaxyS5 Mini. We dealt with the original model in great detail, except, we talked about how the flagship works with, how it can, and at the end we shared our impressions of the long-term. The younger device has incorporated all the features of the older model, you can read about them in these materials, and we will proceed to our review.

Design and usability

Externally, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is a smaller copy of the Galaxy S5; the company did not come up with anything new and simply used a well-known design.

This applies to both the location of controls and body materials, as well as the available colors. If we ignore the difference in size and weight, the only difference can be found - the interface connector is represented by the usual MicroUSB 2.0 instead of the high-speed 3.0, it is not covered with a plug, although the protection class remains the same (IP67). In fact, another difference is hidden under the cover - now there are two, rather than one, slots for Micro SIM cards.

When you take the S5 Mini in your hands, you immediately understand that it deservedly received the “mini” prefix. After the usual five-inch models, a smartphone with a screen diagonal of 4.5 inches really begins to seem small. This feeling is contributed not only by the diagonal, but also by the weight of the case, which is 120 grams.

Of course, this impression is somewhat misleading, because the true dimensions are comparable to analogues:

Smartphone Dimensions, mm Weight, g
Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini 131.1×64.8×9.1 120
Samsung Galaxy S5 142.0×72.5×8.1 145
HTC One mini 2 137.43x65.04x10.6 137
HUAWEI Ascend G6 131.2x65.3x7.85 115
Motorola Moto G 129.9×65.9×6.0-11.6 143

As for the assembly, it is at a decent level, the structure is rigid and does not lend itself to torsion. Yes, with strong squeezing you can achieve a slight crunch of the plastic, but this is forgivable given that the design is completely dismountable, and the review sample was a sample that had clearly passed through more than one hand.

Of the things that you pay attention to a little later, it is worth noting the comfortable mechanical keys, especially the Home key, which is good for turning on the screen, as well as the glossy frame. Its size is slightly larger than average, it makes “bunnies” in the sun and protrudes above the protective screen so much that even the biggest neat people can safely put the smartphone face down.

Operating system and shell

The smartphone runs on the Android operating system version 4.4.2, using the proprietary TouchWiz graphical shell, completely similar to that in the flagship Galaxy S5. In addition to the new “flat” design, what catches your eye is the redesigned settings menu, the items of which are arranged in a matrix rather than a list. This arrangement is quite confusing, and some points are repeated in different groups. However, there is a search and the ability to collapse unnecessary groups of settings, after which it becomes much easier to find the desired item.

From the list of recently running applications, you can go to the built-in program manager and clear the RAM. The notification panel contains shortcuts for quickly changing settings and a slider for changing screen brightness.

Hardware platform

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini comes in several versions. The first, based on its own Exynos chipset, has the G800F index and works with one SIM card. The second, built on the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8226 chipset (1.4 GHz, Cortex-A7, Adreno 305), index G800H, supports the simultaneous operation of two Micro SIM cards. Also, the G800H, unlike the G800F, does not have an NFC module. We tested the G800H version, which is what is presented in Ukrainian retail and online stores.

The remaining characteristics are similar - 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, a slot for memory cards, a fingerprint scanner, a heart rate monitor and an infrared remote control for controlling household appliances.

Of the 16 GB of ROM, about 11.3 GB is available to the user. Immediately after launch, between 700 and 500 MB of RAM are available. During normal use, the performance of the smartphone is at a good level, typical of most mid-range smartphones. This means normal application launch speeds and generally quite fast performance. There will be no problems with games either - Real Racing 3 and Modern Combat 4 run without any lag. Compared to the average smartphone, 1.5 GB of RAM seems like a slight advantage. It is worth understanding that the TouchWiz shell is quite demanding on resources, so it “eats up” part of the memory, and micro-stuttering is sometimes noticeable. But still, the increased memory will make it less likely to see frequently used applications re-download.

There were no complaints about the operation of the GPS and Wi-Fi modules. A “cold start” may take a minute to a minute and a half, and searching with A-GPS turned on will take seconds. Wi-Fi is fast and has good sensitivity.

The smartphone performs well as a multimedia player. The platform allows you to watch FullHD video in popular codecs, including high frame rate video, but does not play AC3 audio tracks.

The quality of music playback is at a normal level, the sound in the headphones is pleasant, without extraneous noise with a high volume reserve. The built-in audio player has good functionality; it does not “understand” all file name encodings, but it contains a functional equalizer with “Tube Amplifier” effects and others.

The operation of two SIM cards is implemented on the basis of one radio module; during a conversation on one of them, the second one becomes inaccessible. The “Phone” and “Messages” applications contain two keys for making a call and sending a message; each SIM card can be assigned its own name and icon. The ringing speaker of the smartphone is of medium volume, usually it is clearly audible, but due to its location it is easily blocked, which greatly muffles the sound of the call. A fairly strong vibration alert helps you not miss a call; it feels good in your pockets. The speaker sounds intelligible and clear, it has a good volume reserve. It is not possible to record a conversation from the line.

The smartphone is powered by a removable 2100 mAh battery. With an average load, including a minimum number of conversations, reading Twitter throughout the day, several hours of listening to music and other activities, the GalaxyS5 Mini will last up to two days. In active operation mode, the charge will definitely be enough from morning to late evening. Below are the results of a two-hour battery test:

Separately, we would like to remind you that the GalaxyS5 and, accordingly, the Mini have an advanced energy saving mode. In a simple version, it allows you to disable background data communication, limit the processor clock speed and screen refresh rate (number of frames), and enable gray shades of the display. In the “Extreme Energy Saving” mode, the smartphone turns into a simple phone, allowing you to receive and make calls and write messages. The manufacturer claims that in this mode the smartphone will work for up to a day on a 10% charge.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has retained the main features of the flagship, which include a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor and water protection. The fingerprint scanner is hidden in the Home button.

It allows you to save three fingerprints, use them to unlock the device, authorize in the Samsung branded store and make purchases with PayPal. To successfully read a fingerprint, you need to move your finger exactly over the button, neither quickly nor slowly. If there have been ten unsuccessful unlock attempts, you will have to wait thirty seconds before you can rescan or enter your password.

To measure your heart rate, you need to place your finger on the sensor, while you need to remain still and not speak, which makes it very difficult to use during sports, such as running. The most useful feature of the smartphone can be considered water resistance (IP67 standard).

Display

The smartphone has a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. Similar to flagship Samsung devices, a Super AMOLED matrix is used. Its minimum brightness is 2 cd/m2, maximum brightness is 335 cd/m2. A quality check of the factory calibration shows a wide color gamut, significantly exceeding the sRGB color space, and a slightly elevated color temperature.

In the display settings, you can select the appropriate color profile and enable the high sensitivity mode, which allows you to operate your smartphone with gloves.

The display looks good in real life.

A wide range of brightness adjustment allows you to comfortably use the smartphone both in the dark and in bright sunlight; readability on the street is good. Automatic brightness adjustment works correctly and quickly; the sensor’s operating algorithm can be adjusted to your liking, so that it sets a higher or, conversely, lower brightness.

You can talk for a long time about the color rendering features of AMOLED displays and the presence of PenTile (which is in the smartphone), but they all usually come down to personal taste preferences. In my personal opinion, such displays are quite good in everyday life and are in no way inferior to high-quality IPS matrices.

Cameras

GalaxyS5 Mini has two cameras: a main one with a resolution of 8 megapixels, autofocus and flash, and a front one with a resolution of 2.1 megapixels. The camera interface is familiar from the company's flagship. The application offers a decent number of settings and shooting modes.

The quality of the images is average, it strongly depends on the lighting and is at the level of modern smartphones in the mid-price segment.

Video review of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini smartphone

Results

In a sense, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini turned out to be similar to previous versions of the company's mini-flagships. As before, the model completely copies the design of its older brother, but this time it has retained all its distinctive features (a set of sensors, protection, energy saving modes). Unfortunately, the noticeably simplified hardware and camera do not allow us to call it a real flagship - we are just looking at a good “average” device with a number of interesting features. The hero of the review may be of interest to those who choose a compact A-brand smartphone with normal performance without regard to its cost.

And S4, so the announcement of the start of sales of the Mini S5 model did not come as a surprise. Although the minis were always named after their big brother, they were all really very much a watered down version of it. The same applies to the S5 mini model.

Main settings

The Samsung S5 Mini has a 4.5-inch 720p display, a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 4G LTE, and a heart rate sensor. The phone runs on the outdated Android KitKat OS. The S5 has a quad-core 2.3 GHz chip, a full HD display and a 16-megapixel camera. The smaller model looks exactly the same as its older brother, although the smaller size makes the smartphone much more comfortable to use in one hand.

It would be more honest to call the Samsung S5 Mini, whose specifications, price of $240 and other parameters do not correspond to those of the S5 smartphone, its lightweight version. An example of this approach is Sony, whose mini phone uses the same technology as its older model. Moreover, the cost of the mini version of the Galaxy S5 and its older brother is almost the same.

Design

Apart from the dimensions, the Samsung S5 Mini Duos has body characteristics no different from its full-size older brother. It has the same soft-touch rubberized back panel with a dotted pattern, "chrome" plastic trim, a home button and the same square camera on the back with a heart rate sensor below it.

The smartphone is made from similar plastic materials, although they feel even more plastic on the smaller model, helped by its very light 120g weight. If someone is looking for luxury in a small phone, then they probably won't be enthused by this modification. Another thing is the HTC One Mini 2, which has a gorgeous all-metal design that is much nicer to hold in the hand.

At 131 mm in length and 65 mm in width, the Samsung S5 Mini smartphone is much smaller in size than a full-size model, thanks to which it not only does not burden trouser pockets, but is also much more convenient for use in one hand. You can use your thumb to cover all areas of the screen, which is more difficult to do on the S5.

The back panel is removable and provides access to a MicroSD card slot, allowing you to expand the built-in ROM by 16 GB, as well as replace the battery when necessary. The smartphone is available in the same colors as the S5, including white, navy blue, electric blue and gold.

Dust and water protection

Like its brother, the Samsung S5 Mini G800F has protection characteristics corresponding to IP67, which means the phone is dust-proof and can be immersed for 30 minutes in water to a depth of no more than 1 m. In practice, this will allow the device not to stall the first time it accidentally gets into the toilet . Unlike the S5, however, its mini implementation doesn't need a flap covering the micro-USB port at the bottom.

It's hard to say how the Samsung S5 Mini achieves water resistance with this open port, especially since it has electricity running through it, but it's certainly practical that you won't have to worry about inserting a fiddly plug. This is noted by users who lost this part in the Galaxy S5, which automatically deprives the device of water resistance.

Display

The 4.5-inch screen of the Samsung S5 Mini, which features 1280 x 720 pixels, is a step back compared to the full HD of the S5. It's true that a smaller screen doesn't need more dots to stay sharp. Indeed, the pixel density of 326 ppi matches the density of the iPhone's Retina display, so one would be too picky to call the display lacking in sharpness.

According to customer reviews, high-resolution images show off a lot of detail, although of course higher-resolution panels appear sharper. But for everyday tasks like sending tweets or viewing photos on Instagram, the 720p display is more than enough. It is bright and easy to read in the dim midday sun of northern latitudes, but it is difficult to say how it will behave in southern countries.

Colors are very vibrant, making cartoon viewing an unforgettable experience, but you can fiddle with the settings to balance out the color balance if you prefer less saturated colors and natural tones.

Android software

The phone runs on the Android KitKat operating system, which is not the latest version of Google software. The interface is almost identical to the regular S5, which isn't necessarily a good thing since the S5 and Mini have so many customizable options that even Android veterans can easily get confused.

The smartphone has a private mode that allows you to protect certain files and folders with a password or the need to scan a fingerprint built into the home button. Owners do not recommend using the latter option, since the fingerprint sensor does not always work. For example, users complain that in most cases the sensor is not able to recognize the fingerprint, as a result of which they have to enter their backup password after a large number of unsuccessful attempts. The same problem occurs with the S5.

The phone comes pre-installed with a whole bunch of proprietary software from the manufacturer, including its own app store, email client and web browser, a software TV remote control and the S Health app, which will allow you to track your fitness progress by entering the number of steps and heart rate with using the heart rate sensor on the back of the phone.

CPU

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini SM G800H, whose 1.4 GHz quad-core processor makes the device quite fast, is mostly lag-free. They become noticeable while navigating the interface. According to reviews from owners, the same problems are observed in the S5. In addition, the manufacturer's phones suffer from a gradual deterioration in operating speed throughout the entire period of their use. It's common for smartphones to slow down a bit when filled with apps, music and photos, but according to some reviews, the Samsung S5 Mini slowed down so much that the device took up to 5 seconds just to open the photo gallery. The Galaxy S4 had similar problems. The Mini seems fine in this regard right out of the box and may remain that way, but it's worth keeping in mind that from time to time you'll need to do a hard reset of the phone to keep it working that way.

Instagram, Twitter, Netflix and image editing in Snapseed are no problem on the S5 Mini, as are more demanding games like Asphalt 8 and Riptide GP 2.

The G800H phone model differs from the G800F in support of two SIM cards, lack of LTE support, and a newer Exynos 3470 processor instead of the outdated Snapdragon 400 with the same frequency and video accelerator.

Battery life

The smartphone is powered by a 2100 mAh battery, and Samsung claims that the device can support about 10 hours of talk time in 3G mode on a single charge, which is confirmed by the owners of the device. Two hours of watching videos over Wi-Fi reduced the battery charge to 80%, and this is not such a bad result. If you use your phone sparingly enough, avoiding games and streaming videos, and not taking a lot of photos, you can even squeeze a whole day out of it.

Speaking subjectively, the audio path is not the strongest part of the device. The sound in the headphones is dry and quite flat, the sound detail is slightly above average, but at high volumes the sound begins to frankly wheeze.

As mentioned above, the hero of the review came to our laboratory without components, but Samsung has always supplied its flagships and their mini versions with decent stereo headsets, and, apparently, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS was no exception - of course, for comfortable listening to music they They don’t fit well, but it’s quite convenient to use as a headset.

Video

The phone comes pre-installed with a standard video player, but not all formats were responsive to it - in particular, the gadget reacted capriciously to video files with an audio track in AC3 format. Installing MX Player solved this problem.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS copes well with Full HD video up to the highest bitrate:

Memory

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS has a flash drive with a capacity of 16 GB. Of these, about 11.5 GB are initially available to the user. In principle, this volume may be enough for normal use, and if necessary, you can install a MicroSD card with a capacity of up to 64 GB inclusive.

The device does not support OTG (USB On-The-Go) mode, so you cannot connect USB devices to the phone.

The smartphone connects to the computer as an MTP media device, and the operating system identifies it as a portable player. Connection standard – USB 3.0.

A 1.5 GB file was copied to the phone’s internal memory in about 2.5 minutes, with a writing speed of ~9 MB/s. The same file is copied to a MicroSD card a little faster, the writing speed is ~10 MB/s.

Communications and wireless capabilities

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS model operates in cellular networks 2G/2.5G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 850/900/1800/1900/2100 MHz), 3G (UMTS/HSPA 900/2100 MHz).

The device keeps the signal confidently, although sometimes (albeit quite rarely) it loses connection and cannot restore it for some time.

There are several modifications of the device; specifically, the one we tested - SM-G800H - does not support LTE networks.

Like most dual-SIM devices, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS operates in Dual SIM Dual Standby mode: the smartphone has one radio module, but both SIM cards simultaneously operate in standby mode. You can talk only on one of them - if during a conversation on one of the SIM cards you receive an incoming call to the second number, you will have to end the conversation on the active card in order to accept the call from the other. If you connect two SIM cards, one of them works only in the 2G network, the other - in the 2G/3G networks.

The device supports Bluetooth v4.0 +EDR and Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. It is possible to use a smartphone both as a modem (USB connection or Bluetooth) and as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). In the settings, this item is designated as “Modem mode”.

There is Wi-Fi Direct, but there is no NFC (Near Field Communication) support in this modification. But there is support for the MHL standard.

There are complaints about the operation of the navigation module - a noticeable cold start time and mediocre tenacity make it difficult to use as a navigator.

Autonomous operation

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS has a removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2100 mAh.

The capacity for such a device is quite normal.

The battery test in AnTuTu Tester showed very good results:

Unfortunately, “field” testing tells us something else:

All tests were carried out at eye-comfortable brightness (~200 cd/m2), with wireless interfaces turned on and synchronization activated.

It is impossible not to note the special ultra-energy saving mode - in this mode, the display displays only gray colors (for AMOLED displays this means minimal energy consumption - only black consumes less), and the functions of the device are “cut off” to the level of a regular “dialer”.

In this mode, the gadget can live for about a day with 10-15% charge.

In normal mode, the phone confidently holds a charge for one day with active use, but it can no longer withstand a two-day marathon without recharging.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS is equipped with: a main camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels (judging by the characteristics, it is similar to that installed in the Samsung Galaxy S3), LED flash and autofocus, as well as a front camera with a resolution of 2.1 megapixels.

The camera interface is standard Samsung. Shooting modes: panorama, HDR, continuous shooting, retouching (beautiful face), automatic scene detection mode. You can adjust the image sharpness, saturation, brightness, tint and contrast. The exposure level (from -2 to +2) and ISO (100-800) can also be adjusted. There are different modes for setting white balance. When shooting video, you can turn on electronic stabilization.

The camera takes good pictures both during the day and in low light conditions; The flash is bright enough, and autofocus works well.

Individual images in the enlarged version are images of the original size, so they can be quite “heavy” (on average up to 2-4 MB). The size and resolution of both versions of the image, as always, are specified in the ALT block of the IMG tag; browsers usually show them in a tooltip.

HTC One mini 2 is very similar to the hero of our review: almost the same price, almost the same hardware... Among the noticeable differences are the lack of the ability to work with two SIM cards and a smaller amount of RAM.

But the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact can without any stretch be called a flagship in a compact case - under the “hood” of the device there is a powerful filling, and if the smartphone is inferior in some way to the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS, it is in the number of SIM cards.

The mini version of ZTE's previous flagship, Nubia Z5 mini, can also offer better hardware, and at a lower price; but a device with such dimensions and weight can hardly be called truly compact. Again, as a minus we will write down the ability to work with only one SIM card.

It is impossible not to mention another interesting competitor – Samsung Galaxy S3 Duos. This device hardly fits into the category of compact devices - the 4.7" screen and not the smallest dimensions have an effect. The design of the device cannot be called fresh either. But what’s interesting is that, apart from the notorious design and several features of the S5 line, this smartphone is able to offer similar functionality for almost half the amount - the maximum they ask for is 12,000 rubles! There is something to think about here.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS didn't win us over, but it didn't disappoint either - it's a solid middling product. It is able to attract the attention of those people who would like to own a Samsung Galaxy S5, but are not satisfied with its size. The price, of course, will scare off many - after all, the same Samsung Galaxy S3 Duos can be purchased for almost half the price, and at the same time get a device of similar power!

But, despite the high price at the start, and, as a result, many strong competing solutions, the model definitely has its own charm - oddly enough, there are still not many small dual-SIM smartphones on the market with more or less decent hardware, especially famous ones manufacturers. And therefore, although the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS is unlikely to appeal to the general public, it will certainly have its buyers.

Pros of Samsung Galaxy S5 mini DUOS:

  • Modest dimensions and weight, high-quality plastic and assembly;
  • Good battery life;
  • Super AMOLED display with HD resolution;
  • Interesting software solutions from Samsung Galaxy S5.

Disadvantages of a smartphone:

  • Average performance hardware platform;
  • Overcharge.

May not suit:

  • Lack of LTE support.
