The entire Motorola model range. Motorola phones, old models: remember the past

Nicolas Cage with Motorola StarTAC

Today to the editor gg an inexorable wave of nostalgia washed over us and we decided to remember the old models of mobile phones, which in one way or another influenced the further development of the industry as a whole, or simply became very popular among users in their time. The hero of today's story about the old days is the American company Motorola. Here you can choose significantly more than 10 models, but we decided to stop at this number. It deservedly got the right to discover: after all, the company created the world's first mobile phone.

Motorola StarTAC

In its best years, the company was not afraid to experiment boldly, and StarTAC is clear proof of this. It became the first phone in the clamshell form factor; many noticed the external similarity of the design with communication devices from the legendary science fiction film Star Trek. At the time of its release (and then it was 1996), the mobile phone became a small revolution; it had all the properties that its competitors lacked: small size and weight, a new, convenient form factor, stylish appearance and the ability to wear without discomfort in any pocket. By the way, this is the first mobile phone with a vibration alert mode, which could be turned on at moments when a loud call would be out of place.

The dimensions of the mobile phone were 94x55x19 mm, and weight - 88 g. The company promised up to 60 minutes of talk time on a single battery charge, although in reality the figures were significantly lower, but the optional additional battery saved the day. The first model supported operation in analog AMPS networks and was equipped with a segment LED display. A little later, CDMA, TDMA, GSM models with an LCD display appeared (pictured).

Motorola RAZR V3

In 2004, the Motorola RAZR V3 became, one might say, a style icon. It was positioned as the manufacturer's flagship, image model. The phone was made in the then popular form factor "cot". The main emphasis was placed on the bright, memorable design of the device: most of the body was made of metal, and the thickness was very small, which caused the creators to associate it with a razor (Razor), hence the name RAZR. the keyboard was flat and also made of sheet metal. It was difficult to call it comfortable, but, as they say, “beauty requires sacrifice.” The technical characteristics could not be called top-end at that time, although the company did not pursue them: the main display had a diagonal of 2.2 inches and a resolution of 176x220 and could display about 262 thousand colors. The external STN display had a resolution of 96x80 pixels and displayed 4096 colors. The camera took photos at 640x480 pixels and video at 176x144 pixels. The phone was equipped with Bluetooth 1.2, GPRS class 10 and mini-USB . The internal memory was about 7.2 MB. The phone was powered by a Li-Ion battery680 mAh. The dimensions of the phone were 98x53x14 mm, weight - 95 g. Subsequently, a large number of variations on the theme of the RAZR V3 appeared.

Motorola E398 and ROKR E1

I would combine the Motorola E398 and ROKR E1 phones since the differences between them were minimal: the color of the case (black for the E398 and white for the E1), the presence of an additional button in the E1 to launch the music player (this modification had iTunes, please note). This was the first sign of the line of “music” phones of the ROKR series. The phones were equipped with really powerful stereo speakers and LED “light music” that blinked in time with the song or ringtone being played on the speaker. There was a built-in MP3 player and a slot for MicroSD cards. An impressive volume of 512 MB at that time was supported, but with some reservations regarding the firmware: my E398 on the factory firmware lost connection with the memory card from time to time, it was cured by rebooting, after reflashing it worked without any questions and with 512 MB.

The phones used different versions of software ( Synergy 2.0 for E398 and Synergy 2.1 for E1), which was also not a problem: smartphones were very easy to reflash and were almost never killed by this process, there were a huge number of custom assemblies, at one time I had fun with this process every day. The smartphone had a good, comfortable shape, the body was covered with a pleasant Soft Touch coating, which tended to peel off over time. The phone had a TFT display with a resolution of 220x176 pixels, displaying 262144 flowers. Camera - 0.3 mg pixel. Dimensions:108x45x19 mm, and the device weighed 107 g.

Motorola V70

The next device also became the ancestor of a rather interesting form factor. The Motorola V70 was the first phone with a “rotator” design. The top cover does not open, as in clamshells, but rotates in the plane of the body and is fixed in a 180º position for conversations. The cover could rotate around the screen in any direction by 360 º. Another interesting feature was the screen. It was round in shape (or so it seemed). In fact, it was a standard, rectangular shape with a resolution 96x64, its corners are simply hidden, and the display itself is inverse, that is, light characters are displayed on a black background.

The rings around the screen could be changed to optional ones. Dimensions were 94x38x18 mm, and weight - 83 g. The capacity of the standard Li-Ion battery was 430 mAh, although a thicker one with 700 mAh could be optionally installed. The phone came out in 2002.

Motorola Aura

Continuing the theme of rotators, one cannot help but recall such a wonderful fashion device as the Motorola Aura. Its body was made of metal and had no sharp corners, only rounded shapes. On the back panel there was a window in which the gears of the rotator mechanism were visible; clock springs, 130 ball bearing, and tungsten gears, the phone is deservedly associated with expensive mechanical wristwatches. This time the screen was truly round. An LCD display with a diameter of 1.55 inches, 480 dots diagonally manufactured by Sharp was used. The screen was covered with 62 carat sapphire glass.

Like most phones of this class, from a functional point of view the device was nothing outstanding. In addition to standard telephone functions, there was a 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera, Java support, a basic web browser, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, A2DP and music player (although there was no standard headphone output, only through an adapter). In a device of this class, all these functions are rather formal. It went on sale in 2008, the price tag was very impressive.

Motorola ROKR E8

In the same 2008, another representative of the music line was released - a device called ROKR E8. It was a more familiar candy bar, but there was something exotic here too. The case was quite thin, but wide, the back panel was made of metal. The blocking was made in the form of a side slider. The first unusual feature was the screen: it had a landscape orientation, while most of its competitors had a portrait screen. Diagonal - 2 inches, resolution - 320x240. There was a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which had not yet become standard in mobile phones.

The main feature was the adaptive keyboard, which the company called ModeShift. In the locked state, no symbols were displayed on it at all. In telephone mode, the keyboard took on a standard form; in player and camera mode, the corresponding control buttons were highlighted. An additional control was the Omega Wheel touch ring, with which you could scroll through lists, tracks, radio stations and adjust the volume. The phone had 2GB of internal memory and a MicroSD slot. Camera - 2 megapixels.

Motorola MPx200

Let's move on to the company's smartphones and start with the MPx line. 3 models were released: MPx200, improved version MPx220 and Exotic MPx with a 2.8-inch resistive touch screen and a design that allows you to open the smartphone both in the vertical plane (like a standard clamshell) and in the horizontal plane. Let's focus on the fairly popular MPx200 clamshell, which was released in 2003. The smartphone ran on the OS Windows Mobile for Smartphone 2002, which supported devices with non-touch screens. The gadget has become quite popular in certain circles.

One of the useful features was the metal fastening mechanism, which gave rigidity and reliability to the device. The main screen had a resolution of 220x176 and displayed 65536 colors, optional - 80x48. The smartphone was equipped with a MiniUSB port and IRDA, in addition, they shoved a slot for SD memory cards there. Supported WAP 1.2.1, GPRS class 8, had a built-in POP/SMTP client and HTML support. Motorola devices have always been famous for the possibility of fairly painless flashing and this device is no exception: all released versions Windows Mobile for Smartphone could be installed on it.

Motorola MING a1200

Motorola also experimented with Linux-based options. Far from the first, but perhaps the most popular was the MING a1200 smartphone. It was equipped with a 2.4-inch touch screen with a resolution of 320x240 (resistive, of course) and an interesting design solution in the form of a transparent flip on which the speaker was placed. Wires went directly to it through the plastic cover. The smartphone was equipped with a 2 megapixel camera with two focal lengths, a slot for MicroSD memory cards, Bluetooth and FM radio.

Not everything was so smooth with the smart component. Initially, only Java applications were supported, but after flashing it was possible to run applications developed using the cross-platform QT toolkit. The smartphone appeared in 2007.

Motorola RIZR Z8

Another rather experimental device from the company, RIZR Z8, was released in 2007. It had a rather interesting design, a black body with yellow elements. The design was called Kick Slider. It differed from ordinary sliders in that when open, the device had the shape of a banana instead of the standard straight one. This had a fairly positive effect on the comfort during the conversation. The smartphone was equipped with a 2.2-inch screen with a resolution of 320x240.

It ran on the rather controversial UIQ 3.1 platform, based on the Symbian 9.2 OS. It was mainly used in touch devices; Sony Ericsson often used it. In this case, the screen was not touch-sensitive. Motorola decided to get out with the help of so-called plug-ins, which displayed the information the user needed; they could display up to five of them simultaneously.

Motorola Milestone (Droid)

Let’s (almost) finish today’s story about the company’s later device, based on the now more familiar Android operating system. The Milestone smartphone (in the USA it was simply called DROID) was released in 2009. It appeared in our latitudes in 2010 and was one of the last official Motorola mobile terminals in our country before closing the shop. It was indicative in many ways: it was a side slider with a QWERTY keyboard and a metal body. The screen was impressive at that time: it had a diagonal of 3.7 inches, a resolution of 854x480 and was capacitive.

The smartphone was the first to use the then updated Android 2.0 OS. Over time (in 2011) it was updated to 2.2. In 2.0, flash support appeared for the first time, which Motorola took advantage of and installed a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and dual flash. The device was running on a processor TI OMAP 3430 (ARM Cortex A8) with a clock frequency of 550 MHz, RAM capacity was 256 MB, built-in - 215, of course there was support for MicroSD memory cards. The battery capacity was 1400 mAh.

Bonus: the world's first mobile phone Motorola DynaTAC

That's all, and as a bonus it's worth remembering, in fact, the world's first mobile phone Motorola DynaTAC, and the first call was made by April 4, 1973 by its creator Martin Cooper. He called the office of Bell Laboratories' main competitors and bragged to the head of the research department, Joel Engel, that he was calling from a real cell phone. Over the long 10 years, until 1983, when the phone received FCC certification, it was significantly improved and already weighed about 800 g (versus more than 1 kg in its first version), and the dimensions were 225x125x37.5 mm.

The activities of the American company Motorola began in the thirties of the last century - with the opening of the production of Motorola's own cell phones with a high level of reliability, safety, the use of high-quality materials and new technologies.

Surely many readers will now remember what a stir there was around Motorola phones in the 2000s. The manufacturer pleased not only with the functionality, but also with the unusual design of almost every model. Let's remember about the Moto corporation, see what has become of it now, and, of course, get nostalgic over the selection of the coolest devices. Motorola phone, old models, photos are waiting for you in this article.

Moto Corporation

The company was founded back in 1928 by the Galvin brothers in the USA. It got its name thanks to one of its first products - the Motorola car radio (moto - motor, ola - radioOLA). In the 50s of the last century, an emblem in the form of bat wings was developed, which made Motorola phones (old models) so recognizable. But that's all later.

Success and decline

In 1956, the company released the world's first pager, and in 1983, the first commercial mobile phone in human history.

But already in the 2000s, the production of mobile phones became unprofitable for the corporation. In 2011, Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion.

What now?

We remember Motorola phones - the company's old models. But in 2016, the electronics company also released a new line of Moto smartphone models. True, under the protectorate of Lenovo. You could see them on the shelves of Moscow stores since March 2016.

Motorola cell phone. Old models

It's time to dive into nostalgia - let's look at ten of the company's most legendary phones:

We hope that you have learned something new and interesting about Motorola phones and the company's old models.

Once the best manufacturers, such as Motorola and Nokia, are now trying to revive users' interest in their devices. Thus, the model range of Motorola, the world leader in the telecommunications market in the early 2000s, now includes about 25 models. Our rating of the best Motorola smartphones of 2020 will help you understand how to choose the most suitable model and where it is profitable to buy it, will introduce you to how much the device you are interested in costs, what are its advantages, disadvantages and technical characteristics.

Motorola is one of the five hundred largest American companies, and is currently divided into two independent divisions and dissolved.

In 1993, Motorola appeared on the Russian market, where it carried out its activities relatively successfully until 2011, after which it left the country.

In the same year, Motorola's smartphone division was acquired by the largest Chinese company Lenovo.

Under the auspices of Lenovo, the Motorola brand reappeared on the Russian market in 2016, and already rather forgotten Moto smartphones began to appear in stores again. The Motorola website has also started functioning, where all currently available smartphone models are presented and comprehensive information on them is provided.

Which company is better to buy the device is up to the user to decide, but Motorola can be safely recommended, since there is no doubt about the quality of Lenovo smartphones.

Average price for Motorola smartphones

In terms of price, the devices start at 4,000 rubles, that is, they are quite inexpensive. The most expensive smartphone will cost 31,000 rubles, but this is rather an exception. Most models fall into the segment from 10 to 15,000 rubles.

It is worth noting that the model range in 2020 consists of 4 lines, the cost of the smartphone directly depends on their membership:

  • Moto Z2 play - high-quality, premium models (15,000 - 31,000 rubles);
  • Moto G - a class of fairly productive devices (10,000 - 18,000 rubles);
  • Moto E - relatively budget smartphones (6,000 - 11,500 rubles);
  • Moto C - economy class, the simplest and most affordable (4,000 - 5,000 rubles).

The most convenient way to find out the cost of the model you are interested in is by using the Yandex.Market service - all offers from many stores in your region and with delivery from the nearest major cities are collected there.

As for the stores themselves, you should carefully read the customer reviews of them. As a rule, the price for a certain model differs slightly - up to a couple of thousand rubles, so you should not run for the lowest price. It is better to buy from a trusted place so that later there are no problems with the warranty, repair or return if any problems or defects of the product are discovered.

The popularity of Motorola smartphone models is unconditional, because it is a brand with history, and an entire generation has grown up on its phones. Today, flagship smartphones from Motorola are in no way inferior to models from other top manufacturers, while they retain their individual features that distinguish them from their competitors. It is worth noting the availability of devices, their extensive functionality, as well as their high quality.

Of course, it’s up to you to decide which model is better to buy - but, albeit small, the Motorola model range in Russia includes many attractive options for the combination of price and quality, and even an unusual design. Therefore, whatever your selection criteria, the American-Chinese brand will find something to surprise and delight you with.

Motorola smartphones have a lot of advantages, and all the identified disadvantages are largely far-fetched and subjective, since they relate to issues of convenience and personal preferences. If you haven’t found “your” device among those reviewed, you can choose another option on the official Motorola website or on Yandex.Market, where more than 20 different models from different price segments are on sale.
