Review of Huawei P10 - top cameras, designer bottom. Huawei P10 review: Amazing camera and design Information on other important connectivity technologies supported by the device

And P10 Plus– two more new smartphones, which were released as part of one of the largest events at MWC 2017 on February 26. Huawei phones are selling well in Europe and Asia, and Russian consumers have recently begun to pay more attention to this manufacturer. After all, they have one of the highest quality cameras from the famous manufacturer Leica and quite interesting characteristics.

And despite the fact that the company does not have the lion's share of customers in the United States, for example, Huawei is still one of the largest smartphone manufacturers. We bring to your attention a detailed review of Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, a description of technical characteristics. We will also tell you about the price of new products and the start date of sales.

Review of Huawei P10 and P10 Plus

Once again, Huawei has decided to make a big bet on the camera of smartphones, similar to its predecessors P9 and P9 Plus. The front and rear cameras of the famous Leica brand allow you to take simply incredible photos. What else do modern users need... But more on that a little later!

Design

The outer shell of Huawei P10 looks quite stylish. This was achieved through the use of a curved screen, a metal body with a small amount of glass on the back panel, which adds a special shine. The home button, which has a built-in fingerprint scanner, remains on the front. This time, the manufacturer decided to surprise users with an expanded color palette: the smartphone is available in white, black, gold, green, purple and rose gold. By the way, you can even choose between glossy and matte polishing.

We waited a long time and finally got it - Huawei P10 arrived on the site for review.

The Chinese company is trying to actively compete with the recognized leaders of the Russian smartphone market: Samsung and Apple. It must be admitted that every year the company’s smartphones are progressing both in software and in terms of design. Huawei is improving its proprietary EMUI shell, developing and using its own chipsets, and was the first to release a smartphone with a dual camera.

Huawei P10 is the company's main smartphone in 2017. Today we will try to figure out how it is going to surprise users.

Traditionally, the device we tested came to us without any accessories, but upon purchase it will still be included. The company's official website lists the following delivery kit: smartphone, power supply, USB Type-C charging cable, paper clip and documentation.

The price of Huawei P10 in the online store shop.huawei.com is from 26,990 rubles.

Design and ergonomics

Huawei P10 comes in several colors: black, pink, champagne, mint and white. We are reviewing the black version of the device, the most strict and serious of all, an excellent option for any audience.

Many users who are interested in smartphones often complain about the very similar and monotonous design of gadgets. It’s difficult to argue with this, because the front panels of Huawei P10, OnePlus 3/3T and Meizu U10/U20 are almost impossible to distinguish from a distance of a meter.

The fingerprint scanner is not visually surprising - the usual rectangular rounded button, however, it is not pressable. Huawei P10 offers users two options:

  • On-screen touch navigation buttons, as in many of the company's smartphones, and a fingerprint scanner on the front panel (works only as a scanner).
  • Using the fingerprint scanner as a navigation button, following the example of Meizu and mTouch 2.0: touch the scanner - back, long press - home, swipe from left to right - active applications.

We have never seen such a solution before, but here it left a pleasant impression. EMUI again distinguished itself in a good sense of the word.

Above the display there is an earpiece and a noticeable front camera eye. In the black color of the smartphone, proximity and light sensors are not visible.

The black back panel looks strict. At the top there is a glass insert on which the dual camera modules, flash and Leica logo are located. As everyone knows, the German company cooperates with Huawei and helps it create high-end cameras. This is the official version.

A little lower in the center is the manufacturer’s logo, at the very bottom are the trademarks.

The antenna strip, rounded at the corners and located at the bottom, is practically invisible in the black color of the gadget. Its shape resembles the stripes on the iPhone 7.

The physical buttons are located on the right side, everything is standard, except for the ribbed power button with a pink outline. Quite a controversial decision.

On the left side, in the usual place, there is a slot for SIM cards and a memory card, which can be removed with a special clip.

The noise-canceling microphone hole is barely visible on the top edge.

The bottom edge of the smartphone houses many elements: a USB Type-C connector, a microphone hole, perforations for the main speaker and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. This location is quite convenient.

As for tactile sensations, it’s pleasant to use the Huawei P10; after all, you’re holding a flagship for 36 thousand rubles. The side edges are rounded, the metal itself, although matte, is quite slippery, you need to be careful here. It is important to note that the case materials are non-staining and the smartphone does not readily get dirty.

The diagonal of the display and the dimensions of the device are comfortable even for using it with one hand; the thickness of the case is only 6.98 mm, weight: 145 grams. The build quality is at the highest level - the smartphone is solid and durable, there can be no talk of any squeaks.

Display

This is not the first time we have tested a Huawei smartphone: we have had the Mate 9 and the P10 Lite. All the presented models have excellent screens, and the Huawei P10 is no exception. The display of the device shines with colors and colors, the color rendition is correct, there is enough saturation and brightness even in sunny weather.

The oleophobic coating is similar to what we saw in the younger version of the flagship: fingerprints and stains do not accumulate and are easily removed, but there are better smartphones in this regard. The tactile sensations are positive and the display is pleasant to use. Note that the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. We, of course, did not test its shock-resistant qualities.

The software for the display is also similar: UV protection mode and contrast settings.

Performance and benchmarks

The Huawei P10 is equipped with a proprietary Kirin 960 chipset, a Mali-G71 video accelerator, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory. These specifications are completely identical to the Huawei Mate 9 phablet, which we reviewed.

In general, the feeling of speed and smooth operation of the two smartphones is the same. The Huawei P10 has a very fast and responsive interface, excellent scrolling behavior in browsers and stable performance in multitasking mode.

The smartphone is also strong in games - Apshalt 8, Dead Trigger 2 and Godfire run without any slowdowns, FPS does not drop, at least it was not noticeable to us. But one drawback was still observed - in heavy games the smartphone got very hot and quickly, which was not observed on the Mate 9. Most likely, this is a software problem that we encountered on the test sample.

The benchmark results are almost identical to the Mate 9's numbers.

Leica cameras and photography

It's time to talk about the most interesting feature of the smartphone - the dual camera. Huawei has made an excellent marketing move; cooperation with the famous German company Leica has definitely borne fruit.

The Huawei P10 camera consists of two sensors: a 12 MP RGB sensor and a 20 MP monochrome sensor. The focal length of both is 27 mm, aperture: f/2.2. Depth, phase and laser autofocus, dual LED flash and, of course, an optical stabilization system are involved in creating images. The set is impressive, let's look at some sample photos.

During the day, the pictures are perfect: detailed, clear and with correct color rendition.

The dual camera also delivers excellent results in artificial light.

Shooting with flash turns out well, there are no flares or color changes, everything is clear and beautiful.

Macro photography is excellent; photographs can almost compete with those taken on budget DSLRs.

In low light, the camera works clearly, preventing the appearance of noticeable noise. Of course, they sometimes appear, but they can only be seen when the picture is zoomed in.

An excellent 8 MP camera with built-in software for various enhancements and background blur is responsible for selfies on the smartphone.

Huawei P10 does an excellent job of recording video, I especially want to praise the optical stabilization, thanks to which the video turns out great and does not twitch, even if you are filming something on the go.

Interface and fingerprint scanner

EMUI 5.1 based on Android Nougat is an excellent shell with a lot of features and interesting things. Once again, there is no point in describing it; everything you need is in Honor 8.

One of the main premieres of the last MWC exhibition in Barcelona was the new flagships of the Chinese company Huawei - P10 and P10 Plus. Meet: the successor to last year's hit P9, the new Huawei P10- perhaps one of the best devices for fans of mobile photography.

Equipment

Huawei P10 is packaged in a small cardboard box: white, minimalistic design, laconic inscriptions with a bright red accent.

It opens in a rather original way: the doors slide apart - inside there is a phone in the tray, under it there is a folder with documents, a paper clip and a bumper, below there are 2 boxes with a headset and a charger. Initially, the doors were fastened with a sticker - a trace remained from it. The manufacturer immediately applied a protective film to the screen.

Appearance

For review, we received the most modest color option from Pantone - graphite black. The younger model has compact dimensions: width - about 14.5 by 7 cm, thickness - almost 7 mm. The creators of the new flagship abandoned their signature sharp corners and most shiny elements - the new P10 acquired soft edges, relying on a monochromatic palette. At the same time, the device lost its individuality and began to resemble the iPhone 7.

On the black matte cover with a discreet logo on top there is a glossy strip: on the left there is the same camera with a dual LED flash. Under the latter there is a laser sensor invisible to the eye. On the right is the LEICA logo and the name of the module SUMMARIT-H 1:2:2/27 ASPH. Below is faded white information about the manufacturer and model code. Hidden antennas with dark colors are practically indistinguishable.

P10 is a so-called “frameless” display with a 5.1" display (6.4 by 11.3 cm), although the screen has a thin black edge. The front panel is covered with protective 2.5D glass. In the center of the one and a half centimeter “platform” above the screen is located earpiece. To the left - light and proximity sensors, front camera and LED indicator (flashes green and blue when charging and indicating new notifications). Below the screen - about a millimeter, an oblong control button “recessed” into the surface, combined with a fingerprint sensor .

On the left edge there is a tray for a SIM card / memory card. On the right is a volume slider and a ribbed power button, accented with a red frame. On the top edge there is a neat microphone point. On the bottom: in the center is a micro-USB Type-C port, on the left is a microphone and a classic 3.5 mm headphone jack, on the right is an external speaker.

The elegant Huawei P10 with rounded sides fits well in the hand - the convenient diagonal of the screen allows you to easily operate the device with one hand. The amazing lightness of the metal smartphone is striking - it feels almost weightless. The only negative: the phone is very thin, smooth and constantly tries to slip out of your hand like a fish.

To handle it more confidently, we strongly recommend wearing a case. The kit, for example, already has a plastic bumper - quite nice, transparent with a matte corrugated surface. In its basic “clothes” the device looks quite organic, although it becomes somewhat rougher and thicker.

Display

Compared to its predecessor P9, the new P10 has a screen with a smaller, but more convenient diagonal of 5.1 inches (64 by 113 mm). The display meets modern flagship standards: IPS, Full HD resolution, the latest 2.5D protective glass. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand a fall from the so-called “selfie height” - approximately 160 cm. Huawei did not set itself the task, like Samsung, of completely getting rid of the frame: there is a thin black “side”, but it does not hurt the eye.

The display supports 10 simultaneous touches; the smartphone is pleasant and easy to operate; it perfectly reads and interprets presses of varying strengths thanks to the new interface. The screen pleases with rich colors (432 ppi), and the brightness is more than enough for comfortable work in bright sunlight. True, the protective film of the screen noticeably glares: whether to leave it or not is at the discretion of the owner.

The eye does not register color distortions when turning in everyday use. The settings have a fairly simple and, at the same time, functional interface for individual screen settings: from design to radiation parameters. In the menu you can not only select the font size and wallpaper from the gallery, from standard options or from the manufacturer, but also set the degree of blur and the presence/absence of background scrolling.

You can confidently trust the “Auto Brightness” function - the smartphone effectively and quickly adapts to the environment. The traditional “Eye Protection Mode”, which reduces the level of UV radiation (for reading texts, for example), is installed if necessary according to a schedule. You can choose a comfortable color temperature not only from the three standard ones, but also set it according to the color wheel.

Cameras

The main pride of the device is the camera, developed jointly with the legendary Leica - one of the most reputable manufacturers of photographic equipment. In fact, Huawei was at the origins of the dual camera craze. And it would not be an exaggeration to note that the Chinese company can be considered the best in this niche.

Since last year's debutant Huawei P9 (main - 12 + 12 MP, f/2.2; front - 8 MP f/2.4), the manufacturer has gained experience and has already released a new generation camera - Lecia Dual Camera 2.0. (The phablet we talked about earlier also received the same module.) For smartphones, Leika makes expensive aspherical lenses, which are traditionally installed in camera lenses.

The functionality of the new flagship cameras will appeal to both amateurs who are accustomed to relying on automation, and professionals who prefer to set the exposure themselves.

At the top of the frame window there is a line with basic settings: “Flash”, “Selfie effects”, “Film” (regular, faded or bright), “Filters”, changing the camera and, of course, "Wide Aperture Mode"- the main feature of a system of two sensors, which is responsible for simulating the aperture or, more simply, “faking” bokeh. The depth of field is set automatically, but can also be adjusted manually (from f/0.95 to f/16) by clicking on the icon with the working f value that appears in the lower right corner. In addition, 2 cameras allow you to fearlessly use the zoom without fear of getting a noisy, unclear image.

At the bottom there is a “curtain” of the PRO mode - you pull it up and configure the phone’s camera like a professional device: selecting focus, ISO (up to 3,200), shutter speed (from 30 seconds), white balance (with Kelvin scale) and exposure compensation. When switching to this mode, the user automatically gains access to the expanded “Settings” menu (swipe from right to left), where you can even choose to shoot in RAW for subsequent professional processing.

Swiping from left to right opens the “Modes” menu, where the user can expect a wide selection of additional functions - from HDR and B&W to “Tasty Food” and “Panorama”, from “Night Shot” to a scanner and Slow-Mo.

In automatic mode, the camera works flawlessly in 99% of cases: it perfectly adapts to any lighting conditions, producing clear and rich images. Focus is fast and accurate even at the shortest possible distance. The dual LED flash provides soft diffused light and does not turn the picture into an unnatural blue.

It’s difficult to distinguish footage taken on the P10 from professional photos, especially on Instagram. So let's just admire our Spanish photos...

P10 Adventures in Barcelona

The front camera from Leica with a resolution of 8 MP and F / 1.9 is similar in interface to the main one, except that there are fewer functions: the lack of a wide aperture mode compensates for the portrait mode - “Decoration”, pleasantly blurring the backdrop and delicately masking imperfections of the facial skin. It works not only when shooting photos, but also videos. Those who like to click in front of landmarks will appreciate the selfie panorama function. The device is compatible with monopods from other manufacturers - no additional software installation is required.

In the settings there is an interesting “Perfect Selfie” item, which allows you to refine the photo in several parameters: “Smoothing”, “Whitening”, “Big eyes”, “Bright eyes” and “Narrow face”. This set is explained by purely Asian ideas about beauty: smooth light skin, large expressive eyes and a “heart” face. I wonder if Huawei is aware of Western women’s tender love for tanning?..

The P10 can also be proud of its video quality: the main camera records in 4K, and the front camera records in HD. The sound quality is not satisfactory.

OS and interface

New P10 and P10 Plus from Huawei received the latest version Android 7.0 with the latest proprietary skin EMUI 5.1 . The developers decided to get serious about improving the process of RAM management, screen responsiveness and photo processing in the background.

It would take a long time to describe all the intricacies of communicating with the new OS, so it’s worth concentrating on the main thing. EMUI 5.1 uses a new Ultra Memory algorithm to free up RAM faster. Moreover, it monitors user behavior to launch the most frequently used applications faster. The system constantly looks for background energy-consuming applications and strongly advises you to close them. It feels like Kuzya the brownie has taken up residence on the phone and is wailing: “Oh, trouble, trouble, ruin! Inventories have not been measured, losses have not been counted..."

Ultra Response technology with a new driver helps the smartphone respond to touches even faster. Moreover, the screens of new smartphones from Huawei now support predictive tracking of the user's fingers. The developers even thought through such details as the problem of accidental unlocking of the smartphone: they processed more than 65 of the most frequently used gestures and scenarios to avoid its occurrence as much as possible.

While the phone is in standby mode, the Highlights function is working hard in the “Gallery”, diligently indexing the owner’s photos by places and people. They also promise that she will create a video of the best moments. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to see this with my own eyes yet.

Judging by first impressions, the EMUI shell seems more thoughtful in many details than standard Android 7.0, although it also takes some getting used to. The new shell strives to adapt as much as possible to the individual needs of the user - the possibilities for customization are simply enormous. You just need to spend time getting to the bottom of all the subtleties.

The familiar curtain, which comes out when you swipe from top to bottom (with one finger - partially, with two - completely) has enriched its range and, most importantly, allows you to arrange icons to your liking. “Long Screenshot”, “Screen Recording”, “Eye Protection”, Broadcasting (via Mirror Share) and some others appeared on the list. It is now possible to monitor the charge level of connected wireless devices in the status bar. Now notifications are no longer divided into two tabs, but are shown across the entire width of the screen. The interface immediately offers to respond to messages that pop up here. You can view active applications simply by lightly swiping horizontally on the multifunction button.

With each new version of the OS, the contents of the Settings menu become wider and more meticulous in nuances that no one had even thought about before. Choose a regular screen style or with a separate “Apps Screen”, customize the radiation, color temperature, image, theme, background. If there are not enough standard options, look among the endless options of the Themes application from Huawei. Further more - choose the proportions and methods of scrolling desktops...

It is worth noting that the EMUI developers have moved away from their traditional minimalism in design: all the standard options are somehow overly tricky and sophisticated. Finding something simple, concise and comfortable has become difficult.

You can be stuck in “Control” for a long time: there is an additional button, a whole set of various control gestures, special modes for a case, working with gloves, and one-handed control. Here you can select the “smart” mode for a standard headset. A separate item in the menu teaches you how to use the multifunction sensor, and also allows you to install regular on-screen buttons. The display now shows a pedometer in standard mode.

In the “Management” menu, you can register your Huawei account, which will give you access to improved service and protection. There is no mess of pre-installed applications on the desktop - only the most necessary: basic programs from Google and several proprietary ones from Huawei.

Of particular note are the convenient “Phone Manager” (comprehensively optimizes the operation of the device), the HiGame toy service, the “Health” fitness application and the HiCare service center. The only thing that confuses us about the latter is the absence of Russia in the list of countries where the program operates.

The new Android 7.0 Nougat is currently available on less than 5% of devices, so many application developers have not yet had time to adapt programs for it. Some applications are buggy or refuse to work at all, especially not very popular ones. Several of our standard system tests failed on this phone.

Fingerprint sensor

This time, Huawei decided to take an example from Meizu and install a fingerprint scanner on the front panel, and the haptic feedback function allowed it to be combined with a control button. More precisely, it’s difficult to call this sensor a button - it’s more like a control “hole”.

At first, “pressing” this oval depression under the screen is somewhat strange - without the usual tactile sensations. But then you get used to it. The fingerprint sensor reacts with lightning speed: raise your finger and the display lights up. Light press - back, strong (until vibration) - home, swipe - list of open applications. The sensor can be responsible not only for unlocking the entire device, but also selectively protect individual applications from attacks by strangers.

Iron

The P10 is equipped with a 14nm HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, independently developed by Huawei, a Mali G71 MP8 video chip and 4 GB of RAM. Internal storage capacity is 64 GB (with a maximum possible expansion of 256 GB via microSD).

Alas, the new flagship still did not receive the Kirin 970, but a slight increase in performance is still observed here: compared to the same processor used in last year’s Mate 9, the Cortex-A73 cores began to run 0.1 GHz faster.

Despite the fact that recently the flagship amount of RAM is considered to be 6 GB (and devices with 8 GB are already appearing), Huawei COO Lao Shi said that 4 GB of 2017 smartphones will be enough for smooth operation.

Purely outwardly, the P10 does not look like a gaming device with its elegant forms and small screen, but if necessary, it can adequately handle resource-intensive toys. He reacted calmly to a couple of dozen simultaneously running applications of varying degrees of severity.
The results of the most popular Antutu benchmark are decent. (We tried out the “long screenshot” for the occasion.)

Testing the system’s strength, we launched one of the heaviest mobile toys, Asphalt 8, on top of those twenty background applications. It ran without problems, but we couldn’t play for a long time - very soon the phone began to hint that it was preparing to burn the “tormentor’s” hands.

P10 completed the race with dignity and only then allowed himself to hang. Even when all applications were closed and processes were optimized, the “glitch” did not disappear - the phone stopped opening the “Gallery”. It returned to normal only after the second reboot... When it finally cooled down. The experimentally determined critical temperature of “dullness” is from 71°C.

The prospective owner of a smartphone equipped with one of the best mobile cameras will most likely give preference to graphic applications and social networks, and for this purpose the device has more than enough data. However, we have not forgotten about augmented reality lovers and launched Pokemon Go - in our opinion, the game that is most adequate to the “abilities” of a smartphone.

Which is better: Huawei or Honor branded smartphones?

The identification of individual brands and sub-brands by smartphone manufacturers is a common thing in modern times. BBK is developed in parallel by three subsidiaries: Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus.

Lenovo has the sub-brands Moto and ZUK in its arsenal, while Xiaomi includes budget devices in the Redmi line. Huawei is also doing this, releasing smartphones under the main brand and the Honor sub-brand.

The question may naturally arise, which is better: Huawei or Honor smartphones? How do they differ anyway?

Why do we need the Honor brand?

In response to questions from reporters, George Zhao (head of Honor's division) gave a clear explanation several years ago.

The sub-brand was created to promote inexpensive smartphones aimed at active youth. Huawei offers smartphones of all categories, and their promotion is very similar to the marketing of the same Samsung.

And the name Honor itself is more convenient for the global market. In the original, Huawei is pronounced close to “ua-way,” but it is sometimes difficult for a European to say it exactly the same way as a Chinese. With the English word Honor there should be fewer such linguistic problems.

What is the difference between Honor and Huawei models?

In short: both lines feature devices of different types. Competition in the market has led to the fact that the clear distinction between brands has become blurred.

Now the manufacturer itself is simply developing both directions, and sometimes uses different names for different regions.

Differences may include support for different communication standards, memory amounts and additional functions (such as the presence/absence of NFC or a fingerprint scanner). It’s impossible to say unequivocally which is better: it all depends on the model.

  • Honor 8 Pro and V9 are the same device, the second model is for China, and is equipped with 128 (instead of 64) GB of memory.
  • Huawei P8 Lite (2017) is very difficult to understand. It is also sold as P9 Lite (2017) in Turkey, GR3 (2017) in India and the Middle East, Nova Lite in Japan and Honor 8 Lite in Russia. The regular model is equipped with 3/16 GB of memory, and the Indian (which is strange) – 4/64 GB. Huawei P8 Lite (2017) and Honor 8 Lite
  • The G9 Lite model is the most powerful, it got 3/32 GB of memory, but the P9 Lite and Honor 8 Smart (Indian modification) were equipped with only 2/16 GB.
  • Huawei Enjoy 6S is also called Nova Smart and Honor 6C, the Nova model has 2/16 GB of memory, others – 3/32 GB.
  • Huawei GR5 (2016) with memory increased from 2/16 to 3/32 GB is sold as Honor 5X. But a model with 2/16 GB is also presented under this name.
  • Huawei Mate 9 Lite is also rich in versions: in Ukraine it is known as GR5 (2017), and in Russia – as Honor 6X. No differences in hardware were noticed. Huawei GR5 (2017) and Honor 6X
  • The Honor Note 8 smartphone is known in its homeland as Honor V8 Max, and the differences are only in communication standards.
  • The Honor 7 Lite (Chinese name) and Huawei GT3 (sold in Ukraine) are the same model, but the Honor 5C (officially presented in Russia) is identical in everything except a fingerprint scanner (it does not have one). Huawei GT3 and Honor 5C
  • Huawei Y6 Pro is also known as Honor 5X Play and Enjoy
  • Huawei Y3 II is identical in appearance to the Honor Bee 2 model (Indian exclusive), but runs on the old MT6582 chipset without LTE, while the “Indian” got MT6735 with 4G.
  • The “big brother” Huawei Y5 II was also equipped with the old MT6582, and its twin Honor 5 Play – with the more recent MT
  • The Y6 II model is also known as Honor Holly 3, under this name the device is sold in India.

There are other smartphones that were simultaneously released under two names, but they have already been discontinued and have almost disappeared from sale.

As can be seen from the list, the manufacturer does not make a clear distinction (for example, branding improved versions with the main name): sometimes Honor is slightly better than its analogue, but sometimes vice versa. Therefore, it is impossible to say unequivocally which is better.

To avoid mistakes, it is better to take the version for your region. That is, Ukrainian buyers would be better off with the same Huawei GR5 (2017), and Russians would be better off with the Honor 6X.

Honor 10 review is better than Huawei P20

A new product from Huawei, although Honor asks to call itself a separate brand, but you and I know that all this comes from one trough. This is Honor 10 and, unfortunately, it was presented in China earlier than in the rest of the world. Therefore, we knew almost everything about this phone in advance. At least what we managed to translate from Chinese.

Just by the color it is already clear that Honor 10 has adopted the design from Huawei p20. There will be four colors here - midnight black, ice gray, and also two mixed colors. The gradients are not the same as on p20. Therefore, the phones can be distinguished. This is good. But they are similar.

Next is the bangs. We won’t hide it, we’re not happy about it, but there’s nothing we can do about it. Although the phone has a so-called mode: if you want the owner, I’ll be your iPhone, or if you want, I’ll be your Samsung. So you can live.

Let's skip the Emotion UI topic right away. He is here. It is the same Chinese, slightly updated. Although in fairness it is worth noting that the Huawei p20 Pro was well configured for bare Android by changing the launcher and installing a new theme. So even Emotion UI can look like a normal shell. Here it is version 8.1 Android is also 8.1. And also NFC and Bluetooth 4.2. The spotty one was not delivered.

The arrangement of the elements is standard. Again, I want to compare it with Huawei p20 because there is nothing left from the old Honor here. This is just such a flagship flagship.

And we won’t be surprised if people choose between Honor 10 and Huawei p20.

The aluminum frame is painted to match the color of the body. There is an infrared port and a slot for 2 SIM cards. Unfortunately, Micro SD cannot be inserted. And finally the sound is stereo and once again this is a good smartphone with good sound.

The most important difference is this button under the screen. It has become simply sensory and is located under glass. It has a fast fingerprint scanner and works well. There is also a face unlock. It also works lightning fast.

Screen

IPS matrix has a resolution of 2280 by 1080 pixels, a ratio of 19:9, and the screen diagonal is 5.84 inches, but it feels in the hand like a smartphone with a 5.2-inch diagonal and is generally very compact.

Honor 10 camera

On the front it’s still the same 24 megapixels. The camera is really very good, but you can immediately see that it is not a reference one. On the back there are 16 and 24 megapixels and you already realized that the camera is not from Huawei p20. Although she is good, she is one level lower. So, let's test it.

But there are many different smart features here, it even says “AI Camera” on the back, there is face recognition, object recognition, there are more scenes, horizon leveling is useful, and for the selfie camera there is a Light Fusion function that improves your photo.

There is also a group music playback function. You can simultaneously connect up to 9 phones and play the “Magadan” song, for example, at the entrance. An excellent function that works using a QR code and is simply an irreplaceable thing at a drive-in party.

Price for Honor 10

In Russia and Ukraine, the smartphone will begin to be sold very soon. But prices are not yet known. Nevertheless, on April 27 it already went on sale in China and there it costs 2600 and 3000 yuan in dollars, which is approximately 415 - 460. And by the way, in Russia the version with 6 GB of RAM will not be only 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal memory and 4 GB with 128 GB of internal memory

Giktimes

Hello Geektimes! Your dear editors attended the presentation of a new smartphone on May 15 - Honor 10. It is already sold in China, and probably someone is already bringing it to Russia, but now there is an official version that will be sold for 27 or 30 thousand rubles. By today's standards, the line is still relatively budget-friendly, but the gadgets in it have top-end characteristics. Below the cut, we will share our first impressions and compare the capabilities of the new product’s built-in camera with the flagship Huawei P20 and the no longer young, but still relevant iPhone 7 Plus.

It seems like Huawei had some kind of tactic from the very beginning that the company is sticking to. Every year in February they release another flagship - Huawei P9, P10, and then P20. Then, after a couple of months, a smartphone under the Honor brand appears on the scene, which largely replicates the top model, but costs almost half the price. Last year, this was the case with Honor 9, which became a budget analogue of the Huawei P10, and this time we have a cheaper copy of the Huawei P20. And since the current flagship turned out to be especially good in terms of camera, in the case of Honor 10 you can immediately count on wide photographic capabilities. True, the camera here is different - the same as in last year's Honor View 10.

Design

It looks good, but something tells me that Honor 10 in a black case will be more popular. This is exactly what we turned over in our hands.

Comparison of Honor 10 and Huawei P20 - who is cooler?

It's hard to choose between a good and a very good phone. It is worth comparing different parameters, including cameras, screens, processor and performance, a set of wireless technologies and battery life. Below are the characteristics and differences between these smartphones.

Parameters in the table

Huawei P20Honor 10
OSAndroid 8.1 (Oreo)Identically
ScreenIPS, 5.8 inches, 2240×1080, 429 ppiIPS, 5.84 inches, 2280×1080, 432 ppi
SoCHisilicon Kirin 970 + Mali-G72 MP12Identically
Memory4 GB RAM + 128 GB diskIdentically
Rear camera
  • 12 MP, f/1.8, 27 mm, 1/2.3 inches; 1.55 µm, optical stabilization
  • 20 MP, monochrome sensor, f/1.6, 27 mm, 2x zoom
  • 16 MP, f/1.8,
  • 24 MP, monochrome sensor, f/1.8
Frontal24 MP, f/2Identically
Battery3400 mAh, fast chargingIdentically
Modules and connectorsWi-Fi 5 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2 + aptX HD, USB Type-C 1.0, fingerprint scannerIdentically

The table shows that the main differences concern the cameras. The screens are approximately the same, as is the hardware.

Displays

This comparison uses materials from the GSMArena website. Phone screens are almost equal in diagonal, resolution and, therefore, pixel density. Other parameters:

At 100% backlight, the smartphones show equal results in terms of black depth and contrast. The only advantage of the Huawei P20 is the Max Auto mode, which is appropriate to turn on when using the smartphone in the sun - the brightness increases, the content is clearly visible, but the contrast level decreases.

There are no significant differences – the displays of Honor 10 and P20 are equal.

Processor and performance

Considering that the phones have equal hardware platforms - HiSilicon Kirin 970 - a high difference in performance is excluded. The Kirin 970 chipset itself is the best processor after the Kirin 980 with a Mali-G72 video core and 8 computing units: Cortex-A53 + Cortex-A73.

Results of testing phones in benchmarks:

GeekBench 4.1 (single-core)

GeekBench 4.1 (multi-core)

In all benchmarks, the devices are close to each other, which is obvious from the graphics. However, in Antutu there is a slight advantage of the Huawei P20 of 6000 points, although in practice the difference in operating speed is impossible to notice.

P20 and Honor 10 are not the fastest phones in the world even at the time of release, and even more so now that the new HiSilicon Kirin 980 is already used in the new Mate 20 Pro. However, the hardware in these phones will definitely be relevant for the next 3-4 years.

Autonomy

Surprisingly, the batteries in the smartphones have the same capacity – 3400 mAh, plus both support fast charging technology. According to the GSMArena website, here are the results of testing phone batteries:

Huawei P20 battery is enough for:

  • 16:33 hours of communication on the 3G network.
  • 13:58 hours surfing the Internet.
  • 12:13 h video playback.

Charging using the “native” SuperCharge adapter at 4.5V/5A from zero to 65% lasts only 30 minutes.

The Honor 10 battery can withstand:

  • 21:14 hours of communication on a 3G network.
  • 11:50 a.m. surfing the Internet.
  • 11:37 hours of video playback.

The kit also includes a 4.5V/5A SuperCharge adapter, which charges the phone from 0 to 65% in 30 minutes. At the same time, the smartphone remains cold. That is, Honor 10 will last longer when communicating on a 3G network, but the P20 is able to play videos and work with the browser longer. Again, there are no serious differences, as well as a winner.

Cameras

The rear sensors are the only thing that differentiates the phones. First, the dry characteristics:

P20 – main camera with 2 modules:

  • Color sensor: 12 MP, f/1.8, 1/2.3 inch, 1.55 µm
  • Monochrome: 20 MP, f/1.6, 27 mm
  • Leica optics, 2X-zoom

Honor 10 – main 2-module camera:

  • Color sensor: 16 MP, f/18
  • Monochrome: 24 MP, f/18

And although the sensors in the phones are different, they work the same: the color sensor captures color; monochrome – light. The algorithm then processes the received data in one image and as a result we see a final photo with a wide dynamic range. AI technology is also supported - automatic scene recognition and preset installation. The AI works dubiously and often distorts colors.

Honor 10 portraits

Honor 10Honor 10

Subjectively: Huawei P20 shows better photography results, but the differences are minimal. There is no obvious winner - on all fronts the phones are equal and worth each other. My recommendation is to take the cheaper smartphone of the two, that is, Honor 10 – prices and the best offers from sellers are shown in the table above.

Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 way more similar than you may realize

The Honor 10 has arrived, packing high-end specs at an affordable price, but it’s somewhat similar to a phone you could already buy, namely the Huawei P20.

That’s because Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, so their latest flagships have a number of things in common, yet the Huawei P20 costs a fair bit more.

With that in mind we’ve created this guide to their similarities and differences to give you an idea of where your money goes and whether the Huawei P20 is worth the extra expense.

Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 design

The Honor 10's back is certainly shiny

The Honor 10 and Huawei P20 both have a glass back and both have a similar color-changing trick, as certain shades of these phones will shift between colors depending on the light and angle you hold them at.

That aside, both have a fairly plain back, but the Honor 10’s is arguably showier as its 15-layer construction causes light to dance on its surface.

Both phones have metal frames and if you flip them to the front you’ll find that both have slim bezels and a notch (which can optionally be hidden).

The Huawei P20 is less shiny, but just as capable of changing color

Dimensions meanwhile are 149.1 x 70.8 x 7.7mm in the case of the Huawei P20 and 149.6 x 71.2 x 7.7mm in the case of the Honor 10, which is to say they’re very similarly sized, but the Huawei P20 is negligibly smaller. It’s slightly heavier though, at 165g to the Honor 10’s 153g.

Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 display

Both phones have a notch and similar sized screens

As well as similar designs, these two phones also have very similar screens. The Honor 10 has a 5.84-inch 1080 x 2280 IPS LCD display, an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a pixel density of 432 pixels per inch, while the Huawei P20 has a 5.8-inch 1080 x 2240 IPS LCD screen with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a pixel density of 429 pixels per inch.

So the Honor 10’s screen is ever so slightly larger, higher resolution and sharper, but it really is a very small difference.

To judge the actual quality of the Honor 10’s screen we’ll have to look beyond specs, so keep an eye out for that in our full review, but the Huawei P20’s screen impressed us.

Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 OS and power

There’s little difference between the specs of these two phones

There’s also not much to choose when it comes to power, as both the Honor 10 and Huawei P20 have an octa-core Kirin 970 chipset. That's a high-end chipset, so you can expect solid performance from either phone.

In the Huawei P20’s case that’s paired with 4GB of RAM, while the Honor 10 is landing in both 4GB and 6GB versions (4GB in the UK). As for storage, you get 128GB with the Huawei P20 and either 64GB or 128GB with the Honor 10 (128GB in the UK), and neither phone has a microSD card slot.

Both phones run Android Oreo overlaid with EMUI 8.1, so there’s nothing to choose there, and as they’re both similarly new they may well get supported with updates for the same period of time.

Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 camera and battery

The Honor 10 has an AI-powered dual-lens camera

There’s a bit more of a difference in their cameras, though still a lot of similarities. The Honor 10 has a dual-lens rear camera with both a 16MP f/1.8 color lens and a 24MP monochrome lens.

Received higher education in fundamental computer science and information technology at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. After that, he became an expert in a well-known online publication. After a while, I decided to try writing articles on my own. He runs a popular blog on YouTube and shares interesting information from the world of technology.

Probably the most anticipated smartphone in my life over the past few years. This is because I’m really hooked on smartphones from this Chinese manufacturer, in particular, I’ve been using the P9 for almost a year as my main device. My level of satisfaction with this product is very high, so I hoped that the P10 would be even cooler, it would correct all the shortcomings and errors of the previous flagship, which still has some shortcomings. Did Huawei manage to meet my expectations, do I see the P10 as a worthy replacement for the P9, and will I exchange my old smartphone for a new one - you will find the answers to these and other questions in this review.

I must note that my testing of the Huawei P10 is accompanied by mixed impressions - admiration gives way to disappointment and then admiration comes again. Perhaps because my expectations from a smartphone were somewhat too high?

I deliberately delayed writing this text so as not to allow the first emotions to influence the content. After several weeks of using the device, we got used to each other and now I can quite objectively tell you everything I think about the Huawei P10.

Technical characteristics of Huawei P10:

Huawei P10 video review

Design, materials, assembly

The appearance of the Huawei P10 is the first ambiguous point. The fact is that I have a matte black version of the device on test, which, upon quick inspection, seems very ascetic compared to its brighter gold, green and blue brothers. For example, I even rather like such simplicity and minimalism, but those around me - ordinary people far from the world of IT - are not impressed by the smartphone. Let's face it - the wow effect is completely absent. Is it good or bad? It all depends on the motivation when buying. If a smartphone is a fashion item for you, it’s better to pass by or pay attention to other color options - they look more impressive and original. Although if you look closely, the black version is actually very good, in my opinion.

  • Typical reaction of the average person: “Oh, what do you have, MEIZU?”
  • Reaction of an iPhone owner: “What, I like it, they outlined it well...”

One of the trends of the current year is the refusal of manufacturers to place the company logo on the front of the device. Huawei P10 doesn't have it either. After all, this is exactly what you all wanted (and so did I). On the other hand, it is now generally difficult for an ordinary buyer to understand what brand of smartphone he is holding in his hands. In the case of a black smartphone, the situation is even more interesting - here and at the back the logo is visible only slightly and at a certain angle.

Personally, I like the design of the Huawei P10. The smartphone has become “rounded” and more streamlined compared to the P9. He got rid of the sharp edges and polished chamfer between the back of the case and the side edges. On the front, along the perimeter, the contrasting shiny chamfer has been preserved; it emphasizes the smooth contours of the case and hints that the structure is made entirely of metal.

And although the general design concept of the P9 seems to have been preserved, the P10 looks and feels completely new. Perhaps largely because the fingerprint scanner has moved from the back of the smartphone under the screen. The manufacturer also eliminated the design of horizontal stripes under the glass elements on the front and back of the P10. By the way, I liked them...

The black version of the smartphone, in my opinion, is especially good, since when the screen is turned off, the front panel looks absolutely solid, and in this state the rather large margins above and below the screen are practically invisible.

In front, the eye clings to the fingerprint scanner, made in the form of a shallow smooth recess in the glass, which only emphasizes the general concept of the Huawei P10 - absolute symmetry (in front, the upper and lower fields are the same in height), smoothness of shape and tactile softness. Yes, it is by touch that a smartphone is best known - it is absolutely devoid of sharp edges and protruding parts. Everything is so “sleek” or something... With the exception of the buttons - but here the problem is the opposite - they simply must protrude and be easy to touch.

There are no complaints about the materials of the smartphone, which is already traditional for Huawei flagships - noble metal and glass. The plastic antenna inserts on the bottom are copied from the Apple device; they are gray, and in the P10 version with a black body they are almost invisible.

The assembly of the Huawei P10 is also almost perfect, with the exception of one annoying little thing that runs through all the manufacturer’s models - microscopic play in the volume key. Why this point cannot be eliminated is completely unclear to me. But overall it's just great. The smartphone feels absolutely solid in the hand.

Layout of elements

In fact, apart from the scanner layout, almost nothing has changed in the Huawei P10 compared to the P9. Nevertheless, we will carry out a traditional external inspection of the device.

At the front we have a screen with small frames on the sides and fairly large margins at the top and bottom. Yes, these fields are slightly larger than last year's flagship. Despite the fact that the dimensions of the smartphones are almost the same in height, the screen diagonal of the new product has decreased from 5.2 to 5.1 inches. This is probably the fee for the “button”, which is located under the screen. Above the screen is a small speaker grille, to the left are light and proximity sensors, a front camera and an LED indicator, almost invisible in the black version of the smartphone.

On the right side there is a large volume key - smooth with a white polished chamfer. Below is the power button - corrugated with a crimson chamfer. Due to this color indication, the location of the button is visually striking when it comes into view. By the way, the first time I came across such a solution was in .

On the left there is only a slot for two SIM cards in Nano format. The second slot is traditionally hybrid and can accept a microSD memory card instead of a SIM card.

On the bottom edge we have a USB-C port in the middle, a conversational microphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack to the left, and a main speaker grille to the right. At the top is only the hole for the second microphone.

On the back side of the case at the top there is an insert made of Gorilla Glass 5 with two cameras on the left, then a dual LED flash, a laser focusing unit, LEICA inscriptions and optics characteristics - SUMMARIT-H 1: 2.2/27 ASPH.

Ergonomics

As I already said, Huawei P10 is very pleasant to the touch. And it fits well in the hand due to its rounded shape. The width of the new smartphone is slightly smaller than that of the P9, which means it has become even more convenient to operate it with one hand. The mechanical power and volume buttons are in the right places, easy to feel, and pressed clearly, with a characteristic click.

The multifunctional touch “button”, also known as a fingerprint scanner, located under the screen, also does not cause problems. In general, in terms of ergonomics, no shortcomings were found.

The only thing that is typical for all all-metal devices is the slippery body when you take the smartphone with a dry hand. There are high chances of dropping it at this moment. If you don’t want to take risks, then a bumper or cover is traditionally recommended.

Display

Let me remind you that the new smartphone uses a 5.1" IPS matrix with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. The pixel density is 432 ppi. Viewing angles are traditionally good.

Compared to the P9, the display in the Huawei P10 has become warmer, approaching the “reference” color reproduction of the iPhone. At first the screen seemed too “yellow” to me. But when I got used to it, the Huawei P9 display began to look blue. In addition, it seemed to me that the manufacturer slightly reduced the color saturation, and they became more natural.

In the screen settings, you can turn on the eye protection mode (analogous to the night mode on the iPhone) and you can adjust the color temperature.

Also, the brightness range in the P10 has expanded. The minimum brightness has become even lower. And the maximum has increased slightly. This improves the display performance of the Huawei P10 compared to the previous model, which I previously found to be excellent. It is still good, but in a direct comparison I still prefer the screen of the new product.

On the front, the display is covered with 5th generation Corning Gorilla Glass. There is no air gap between the glass and the display, which is of course excellent - the image on the screen looks cool. In addition, the P10 retains a mode for improving display in intense lighting by further increasing brightness, contrast and changing color temperature on the fly. This mode works really effectively - the screen remains readable on the brightest sunny day.

However, upon examination of the front part, perhaps the main drawback of the device is revealed, which is expressed in the complete absence of an oleophobic glass coating. I don't know exactly why this happened. Company representatives never gave me a clear explanation, other than that the scanner, which is actually integral with the glass, would stop working at lightning speed if it was covered with an oleophobic layer. The excuse is so-so...

I have a test sample of Huawei P10 in my hands marked “not for sale”. I don’t know exactly how things are with serial devices that go on sale. But judging by the reviews on the Internet, they are sold with a protective film glued to the screen, which the manufacturer does not recommend removing.

UPDATE: Internet whining worked! The Huawei office confirmed the information that new batches of smartphones contain an oleophobic coating.

In addition to the fact that the screen of the Huawei P10 quickly gets dirty and the finger begins to glide across the screen poorly, I often encounter the following problem. When the glass is very dirty and my hands are cold and dry, the touch panel sensor perceives the pad of my finger as a knuckle, and turns on the screenshot mode of part of the screen (you need to circle some element) - it starts drawing blue lines instead of scrolling a list or answering a call. And it's very annoying. In general, I had to disable this function completely, fortunately there is an opportunity to do this in the settings and it’s good that I don’t use it, so I didn’t lose anything.

Overall, I'm pleased with the screen. The progress compared to the P9 is undoubtedly noticeable. The Huawei display is certainly not perfect, but it performs just fine in real-life use and provides a positive user experience in all lighting conditions. Also, the auto-brightness mode in the smartphone works correctly and quickly.

Hardware and performance

Huawei P10 is equipped with a new proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, which we already met in the review. The Mali-G71 accelerator is responsible for the graphics. All current Android games run on the smartphone without problems at maximum graphics settings.

To be honest, I'm already so tired of describing the performance of flagship smartphones... Over the past 3 years, they have reached such power that they can handle the Android system without any questions at all. And it is simply impossible to notice a noticeable difference between devices in operating speed by eye. What about flagships... Even mid-level devices and often state-priced devices now provide decent performance in ordinary user tasks. The only moments where differences between smartphones can be noticed by eye are games and the speed of interface animation, but here everything depends more on the manufacturer - how much they complicated these animations and how long they took. Even with a direct comparison, you can see the difference in the speed of launching programs and switching between tasks. In general, user satisfaction with the speed of a smartphone now depends more on optimizing the firmware and software.

However, if any of you are interested in the raw numbers of the results of synthetic benchmarks, here they are:

Interface smoothness test - FPS measurements in typical tasks (for those who know what it is):

A little about heating. In ordinary tasks it is simply absent. The device gets warm when playing games, but only slightly. The heaviest heat is observed when using the camera, especially when shooting 4K video and turning on the wide aperture effect. But it is also not critical for using the device - no camera shutdowns due to overheating occurred, no matter how long I did not shoot.

Autonomy

In this regard, purely quantitatively, the Huawei P10 shows an improvement - compared to the P9, the battery has increased from 3000 mAh to 3200 mAh. But in practice, I did not see any difference in autonomy between the new and old flagship. Same day of work from early morning to late evening and 4-5 hours of active screen with my usual use of the device.

But the fast charging mode, of course, pleases. It’s really cool that you can recharge your smartphone in 20-30 minutes to work for 6-8 hours. With Huawei P10, I switched from night charging to morning charging. In an hour it charges approximately 80-90%, and in principle I don’t need more. And for the battery, this mode is more gentle, it seems to me.

Cameras

Compared to the P9, there are major changes in the Huawei P10 camera department. If previously both main modules were 12-megapixel, now a 20-megapixel black-and-white sensor and a 12-megapixel color sensor are used. The main module received an optical stabilization system, laser, phase and hybrid autofocus.

Let me remind you how 2 cameras work in Huawei P9/P10. The main black and white module is responsible for detail and wide dynamic range. And color data is superimposed from a second color camera. You can also take gorgeous monochrome photos that imitate photos from black-and-white film cameras and use the shooting mode with a wide aperture (beautiful bokeh), as well as post-focusing previously taken frames.

Briefly about the improvements - the photos have become clearer, the light sensitivity has increased slightly - compared to the previous model, the P10 camera takes brighter pictures. But there is a nuance here - the default camera settings are set to 12 megapixel shooting mode. Therefore, you need to switch to 20 megapixels to see the effect of improved detail compared to P9. Also, the white balance is set more correctly - the color rendition of the pictures has become closer to real. In some cases, in difficult lighting, the P9 tilted colors towards blue or pink. There are no such problems with Huawei P10.
