The approach of spring stimulates the emergence of fresh technical ideas, for which there is still no shortage in the world of smartphones. The end of February is marked by a premiere boom, causing considerable excitement, primarily among developers seeking to realistically assess their commercial prospects for 2016. Each gadget manufacturer voices its own melody of spring, which is quickly picked up by an army of thousands of fans. Presenting to the public smartphone ZTE Blade V7, ZTE did this too. But what exactly does the newcomer from the Celestial Empire carry within himself, we will now try to find out.

Not alone, and therefore not weak

Sharing the traditions of other smart families ZTE Blade V7 arrived at the exhibition not alone, but with the support of his younger brother ZTE Blade V7 Lite, which only gave him confidence. Even before finding out what was hidden under the cover of a durable metal case, the public had the honor of seeing a phone model, the thickness of which in some places does not exceed 3.5 mm, and on average no thicker than 7.5 mm. And this is actually not typical. Someone even found something in common with the iPhone 6 in appearance. It is assumed that the device will primarily receive recognition from young people or those who consider themselves to be one of them.

Face to face

The front decoration of the device running Android Marshmallow 6.0 is a 5.2-inch matrix with a resolution of 1920x1080p, which is under the reliable protection of 2.5D glass, ending with smooth curves of the profile. It's not new, but it's still fresh and relevant. In front there is only one control key in the form of a ring, a speaker and a microphone.

As a working basis, the manufacturer chose the MediaTek MT6753 chipset, which has 8 cores and operates at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The presence of 2 GB of RAM, behind which there is a 16 GB potential of the internal storage unit, plus a reserve in the form of a microSD slot, which can be occupied by a second SIM card if desired, also looks optimistic. In one word, the smartphone’s cameras are good: the main one with a resolution of 13 megapixels and phase detection autofocus (PDAF), the front one – 5 megapixels. Note the expanded functionality of Smart Sense gesture control.

A 2500 mAh battery will allow you to stay in the company of the gadget without recharging for about a day and a half or a day in intensive use.

Market prospects

It is no secret that the device occupies a position closer to the middle of the functional vertical and with all its nature proves that this is its place, no matter what market it finds itself in. Most likely, domestic users will see this product later than V7 Lite, whose debut in Russia is scheduled for spring.

Introduction

At this year's Mobile World Congress, ZTE unveiled two smartphones. Both are already on sale. The first is a typical “mid-range” device priced at about 17,000 rubles, and the second is a slightly more affordable device priced around 12,000 - 14,000 rubles.

The V7 Lite gadget stands out because it is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, has a metal body (alas, not all-metal), a good IPS matrix and a flash for the selfie camera. However, other parameters leave much to be desired. What exactly? Let's find out in this review...

Design, dimensions, control elements

The editors tested several smartphones: Highscreen Tasty, Meizu M3s mini and ZTE Blade V7 Lite. All of them seem to be made as a carbon copy: part of the back panel is metal, the top and bottom inserts are made of plastic, the sides are made of iron, the front panel is made of durable glass. It seems that either the developers have run out of imagination, or these devices are “from the same breed” (from the same factory).





However, in general, the ZTE looks neat, fits perfectly in the hand, is well assembled without play, without pressing metal to the battery, the colors of the plastic (inserts) are correctly selected, the body is relatively compact with a thickness of just under 8 mm, the weight is also within reason (132 grams ) for a 5-inch gadget.




The V7 Lite is available in two colors: gray and gold.

The back cover is matte, the edge is polished, and there is a plastic rim along the perimeter of the front panel, which serves as a shock absorber if the device is accidentally hit by the side edges.

The gadget has an oleophobic coating, but it is not the most effective. However, the finger glides over the surface without any problems, and fingerprints are easily removed.





On the front side at the top there is a flash for the selfie camera, an indicator of missed events and battery charge, a camera, sensors and an earpiece. The speaker is loud, intelligibility is average.


Below the display there is “Back”, a round “Home” and a menu call. There is a backlight.


At the bottom there is a microUSB and the main microphone, at the top there is a single headphone jack, on the left there is a volume rocker (metal), and on the right there is a power button and a joint slot for two nano SIM cards or the microSD+nanoSIM option.






On the reverse side there is a flash, a lens protruding a millimeter above the body, and a round fingerprint sensor (average speed, can unlock the screen without activating the backlight).

At the bottom you can see two holes with meshes: on the left is the speaker, and on the right is the decoration.





Display

This device uses a screen with a diagonal of 5 inches. Physical size – 62x111 mm, frame on top – 16 mm, bottom – 17 mm, on the right and left – approximately 4 mm, which is an excellent indicator for such a device. There is an anti-reflective coating.

The display resolution of the ZTE Blade V7 Lite is HD, that is, 720x1280 pixels, density is 293 pixels per inch. IPS OGS matrix. For a 5-inch diagonal, the resolution is quite normal, pixelation is almost unnoticeable, the picture is clear.

The maximum brightness of white color is 250 cd/m2, the maximum brightness of black color is 0.30 cd/m2. Contrast – 800:1.

The viewing angles are maximum, the picture is clear, the colors are natural, there is no violet or yellowing at angles. In general, the matrix is ​​of high quality, the only thing it lacks is higher brightness, although the contrast is decent.

Battery

This model uses a non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh. The manufacturer does not provide data on autonomy.

The operating time of the gadget is exactly the same as that of any other budget Android smartphone with a similar battery, i.e. “lives” for about 6-7 hours in a relatively active mode with a connection to 3G or 4G: 20-30 minutes of talking, about an hour of using the camera, the same amount of video watching, 3-4 hours on Twitter and mail. If you want to play, expect about an hour at full brightness and full volume output to the speaker. Video playback is about 6 hours.

The battery charges in 3 hours from a standard AC adapter, and in 5-5.5 hours from a USB PC.

Communication capabilities

This section could have been skipped. There is nothing interesting in it: two SIM cards, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS (works well, sensitivity is average). The only pleasant thing is that the device understands the fourth generation 4G LTE network with frequencies of 800/1800/2100/2600 MHz.

Memory and memory card

Inside there is 2 GB of RAM. For such a device, this amount of RAM is a good result. However, for around 14,000 rubles you can find PCT devices with three gigabytes of RAM.

Built-in memory 16 GB. About 10 GB available. Apparently, the installed programs and the shell “ate” a lot. Of course, microSD memory cards are supported, the maximum capacity is 32 GB, which is rather weak.

Camera

There are two modules, in fact, like in almost any other similar smartphone: the main one is 13 MP (with autofocus, F2.0 aperture), and the front one is 8 MP (F2.2 aperture, wide angle).

During the day, the main camera module takes good pictures: good detail, relatively accurate colors, quite adequate dynamic range, beautiful background blur. The focus is accurate and fast (it feels like phase focus). Disadvantages: first, it lathers in the corners, second, under insufficient lighting conditions, artifacts and noise appear.

There are two flashes: one at the back, the other at the front. The effective glow distance of the first is up to 1.7 meters, the second is up to 40-50 cm.

The front camera is equipped with a wide-angle lens. Apparently there is a bug in the software: the face is almost always blurry, as if a strong blur effect was applied. If this effect does not exist, then the picture is pleasant.

The device shoots standard video - HD at 30 frames per second during the day and 16 fps in the evening. The quality of the videos is poor. Focusing is achieved with a touch, the speed is average, the accuracy is high, the macro is about 5 cm. The sound is clear, but not very loud. Selfie videos are also HD.

Performance and Software Platform

The device runs on the Taiwanese MediaTek MT6735P chipset. This is a 64-bit SoC that contains 4 ARM Cortex-53 cores, 28 nm process technology, each clocked at up to 1 GHz. The graphics used are Mali T-720 with support for Open GL ES 3.0 and Open CL 1.2 API.

When the processor is loaded, the case practically does not heat up.

The interface functions very quickly without any lags or slowdowns. The situation with games is typical: everything starts, but some complex games can be very slow (you need to select low graphics settings). There are no problems with simple ones.

Performance tests




The ZTE Blade V7 Lite smartphone runs on the Google Android operating system version 6.0. There is a proprietary shell called Mifavor.

ZTE Blade V7 and V7 Lite are brand new smartphones that the company presented in Barcelona at the MWC 2016 exhibition. V7 is a logical continuation of its predecessor V6, which in Russia for some reason is called . I managed to play around with it, test out the new products and, of course, get a first impression of the devices.

Make an uncomfortable stand. Done!

I can’t help but tell you at the beginning about the organization of the ZTE stand. It was large, beautiful, slightly interactive and located in the right place - on, so to speak, the main street of the exhibition, in the third, most important hall. The location itself suggests that the manufacturer wanted to become noticeable. I think he succeeded.

Despite all this, the stand was not organized as well as we would have liked in some places.

Personally, it’s very strange for me when companies, trying to protect their products at stands from theft, attach huge plaques to the back cover and tightly close the Micro USB connector. As a result, the smartphone cannot be picked up, the elastic cable constantly pulls it back into place, the device does not fit in the hand, which means you cannot feel all the sensations that the manufacturer put into its brainchild. Where does such distrust of those who want to test a new product come from? As a rule, there are no random people at the event. And why are there girls in corporate T-shirts running around every now and then?

Definitely not to explain anything about the product. In most cases (not always, please pay attention) they only know memorized marketing tricks regarding the device, to the question “What processor is installed in the smartphone?” or “Can the device shoot 4K video?” no one can answer.

Secondly, all these security things constantly beep when you accidentally touch the Micro USB wiring. The atmosphere around is still created. Especially when some Italian blogger stands next to you and broadcasts to the whole of Italy, obviously trying to shout to Sicily.

Thirdly, two out of three ZTE Blade V7s turned out to be dead, so it was impossible to try the devices. I feel as if I walked into the Euroset showroom, where nothing often works on the open display.

This smartphone needs to be studied, first of all, by comparing its technical characteristics with the original version. Below is a sign where I have highlighted the improvements in green and the things that have worsened in red. Yes, I was not mistaken. The advanced version has its own controversial issues.

The V7 Lite, with its specifications, is suspiciously reminiscent of the Blade V6 (or X7 in Russia), which in turn was shown at IFA 2015. You can read the material about this device.

Let's return to our heroes. The “light” version received an HD screen (1280 x 720), but this is not at all critical. With a screen diagonal of 5 inches, it is difficult to make out individual pixels; fonts, icons - everything looks smooth. The problem is that the protective glass does not have an oleophobic coating. And this is what the phone will look like most of the time.

It is quite difficult to clean it from greasy fingerprints. You need to diligently breathe on the screen and only then use the cloth. It is very sad when smartphone models without oleophobic coating enter the market in 2016. Especially given the fact that the vast majority of the same Chinese, cheaper than $200, have been using such coatings for a long time.

Surprisingly, Russia is the first country where ZTE Blade V7 Lite sales. This will happen this spring. Afterwards the device will appear in Spain, Germany, Thailand and other countries.

Let's move on to a more advanced, and therefore more interesting device.

ZTE Blade V7

In my opinion, you shouldn’t cut functionality in order to make something cheaper, and therefore of lower quality. It is better to limit yourself to one, well-coordinated model. And it could fully be the Blade V7, but not everything is as smooth as it seems. First, about the appearance and design.

The new product fits perfectly in the hand; a rather strongly curved protective glass is installed on the front, due to which the device’s screen plays like sunbeams (in our case, lamp-based ones).

In addition, the device is very lightweight. Yes, it is small, but you still expect a slightly heavier phone. The weight, by the way, has never been disclosed by the company, so there are no figures on this matter.

The assembly is good. The base is a metal frame. There are plastic inserts on the top and bottom. They are adjacent to the metal, not to say that it is ideal, but this cannot be called an obvious flaw during assembly.


At the back there is a slightly protruding camera eye.

For some reason they decided to remove the fingerprint scanner in the older model. An extremely strange step, for which it is difficult to find an explanation. Maybe someone mixed something up during the development of the device?

At the bottom there are holes for a microphone and a multimedia speaker. In the middle there is a Micro USB port. It supports the OTG protocol, as stated by the manufacturer itself. But nothing is known regarding the same support for the Lite version.

However, the extremely positive impressions of the design change dramatically when you start using the device, namely, you go into the menu and launch some applications.

In my case, out of 5-6 applications, about half crashed, including Google Play and even standard Settings. The video below shows me unsuccessfully trying to remove my Google account from the menu.

In the end, everything worked out, and only because I had to mention in not the most censored language all the ancestors of this device.

In addition, the device freezes at almost every turn. And this despite the fact that when it is not buggy, everything works decently, without brakes. In this regard, it’s worth saying thanks to Android 6, but specific programmers working on a new device will still have to finish and finish the device.

On the other hand, the release of this smartphone is not coming soon. The company has time to bring everything to fruition. I think it will be so. Ultimately, such crime as I encountered at the exhibition should not exist.

In terms of synthetic performance, everything is as expected.

Far from a breakthrough device, but with a more or less proven and good MediaTek MT6753 processor. For undemanding users, its capabilities are beyond the eyes.

The quality of the ZTE Blade V7 cameras is quite good for the mid-price segment. The lighting at the stand was not the best. It is completely artificial and in some places there were dark spots. However, the device coped with photography, in my opinion, quite well.

Of course, the device can also shoot videos in Full HD resolution and at 30 frames per second. Example below.

ZTE Blade V7 price will be $249. It’s too early to talk about Russia, if at all it’s advisable. Still, with direct conversion, excluding taxes and all other mandatory fees, this is approximately 18,000 rubles. If it were, then it's just another average smartphone on the shelf. However, most likely the final price will be higher, so, in my opinion, there is no need to talk about the success of the device in our area.

Sales of the Blade V7 are scheduled for this summer in Germany, Spain, South Africa, Ethiopia and Mexico.
