Wear reduction seems to mean that the block can be "removed" at any time, in which case there is no way to erase it without bypassing the microcontroller's wear level. AFAIK this cannot be done in software, even if you have kernel privileges; you will have to develop special equipment.

However, the "retirement" of a bad block should be a fairly rare event relative to the life of the media, so for many scenarios the clearing method will be quite safe.

Erasing traces

Note that the Gutmann method has the important power of erasing possible traces of old data on the storage medium, which may remain even after the block is overwritten by new data. These traces could theoretically be read by a specific attacker with more resources. A truly thorough approach to safe removal would augment a method like Gutmann's with cleanup rather than replacing it.

However, when dealing with log-structured and wear-resistant file systems, a much bigger challenge is making sure that sensitive blocks are overwritten at all.

Do existing applications use these methods?

I don't have inside information about the apps on the app store, but looking at reviews of apps like iShredder, at best they use methods like Rearddon's "cleansing". For example, they can take several hours to complete a single wipe of 32GB of free space.

Also note the limitations: reviews of some secure deletion apps say that in some cases, "deleted" files are still accessible after running the "secure delete" operation. Of course, we take these reviews with a grain of salt - there is a possibility of user error. However, I would not assume that these applications are effective without good testing.

When you delete a file with standard methods like file.delete() or runtime.exec("rm -f my_file") , the only job the kernel does is remove information about the file from the auxiliary filesystem structures. But the storage sectors containing the actual data remain untouched. And because of this, recovery is possible.

This gives an idea of ​​how we can completely delete a file - we have to erase all sectors somehow. The easiest way is to rewrite the entire contents of the file with random data several times. After each pass, we must flush the file buffers to ensure that new content is written to storage. All existing methods for securely deleting files revolve around the principle above. For example this one. Please note: the universal method does not work on all storage types and file systems. I think you should experiment on your own and try to implement some of the existing approaches or develop your own. For example. you can start with the following:

  • Overwrite and dump the file 10 times with random data (use FileOutputStream methods). The note!!! Do not use zeros or other low entropy data. Some file systems may optimize such sparse files and leave some sectors with the original content. You can use the /dev/urandom file as a source of random data (it's a virtual file and it's infinite). This gives better results and is faster than the famous Random class.
  • Rename and move the file 10 times. Select new file names immediately.
  • Then we truncate the file using FileChannel.truncate() .
  • And finally, delete the file using file.delete() .

Of course, you can write all the logic in your own code, it may even be somewhat easier than in Java. The described algorithm is just an example. Try this. The correct answer to this question, however, varies. Modern SSD drives and operating systems cannot delete individual files. So these apps don't really offer a compelling product. Modern operating systems store fragments of a file in different places, and it is possible that even after you have reset the latest version of the file block by block and also overwritten all the metadata, a fragment from an older version of the file may be left in another part of the disk.

The only safe way to remove sensitive content from a drive is to erase the entire drive several times before discarding the drive.

@LarsH's answer about clearing all unallocated space after deleting files is compelling, but perhaps impractical. If you just want to protect your deleted files so that no one can scan the drive to recover it, the best solution would be full disk encryption. It was really just a call to full disk encryption. That's why Apple stopped supporting secure file deletion in its Mac OSX and iOS and switched to full disk encryption by default on all iPhones. Today, Android phones also have full disk encryption.

If you are looking for a true client solution, single file encryption is your best bet. Once you destroy your key, which only your application will know, there is no way to decrypt the file, even if someone found it on the disk.

There is no real solution to securely deleting files on an SSD. You may give a false sense of security to non-technical people who still remember the old HDD days.
