Nobody questions the success of the Galaxy S line anymore. This is the only line of smartphones that not only became famous and popular, but was able to largely surpass the famous iPhone, which was considered the standard for almost a decade. The success story of this series began with the first model released on the mass market, but it was the second version of the gadget that left a special mark in the memory of users. Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100, the characteristics of which were simply discouraging at the time of release. None of the competitors could even come close to it in terms of the power of the “filling”. The technologies that were involved in this device were not available to other manufacturers, so the Koreans, without wasting any time, used their trump card and decided to bring to the market all the best that they had, thereby seizing the championship banner from Sony and HTC. Since then, Samsung has become the trendsetter and the main engine of progress in the difficult conditions of the struggle for the smartphone market. In this article we will talk about one of the most prominent representatives of this industry - Samsung Galaxy S2. Is he really that good?

Case design and materials

Dimensions: 125x66x8.5 millimeters.

Weight: 116 grams.

The main design solutions were carried over to the Galaxy S2 from the first generation of smartphones. The same plastic as the main material, the same hump on the back panel, except that the phone has become a little wider compared to the previous model, which caused a lot of negativity on the Internet. An important difference was the thickness of the device. From a value of 11 millimeters, the thickness of the case has dropped to 8.5, which is impressive. The back cover has a corrugated surface, a kind of imitation of leather on plastic. Visually, this solution looks, to put it mildly, vulgar, but in practice it works perfectly. This surface does not allow the phone to slide, thanks to it there are almost no small scratches, and even less fingerprints. Only the hump in the lower part of the body is severely scratched and rubbed off. The phone fits well in the hand and easily fits into a trouser or shirt pocket. The front panel of the device is boring, as, in fact, it always was before the advent of the Edge model. As for the build quality, everything is at an average level. Creaks and slight play are noticeable, the body is far from monolithic and this greatly spoils the impression.

Controls and Ports

Almost the entire front panel of the gadget is occupied by the display. Above it are a front camera, a proximity sensor and a speaker. Below the display are the main control keys: a touch button for calling up a list of running applications, a physical Home button, and another touch button for going back one level. A headphone port (standard 3.5 mm jack) is hidden at the top end. At the bottom there is a port for connecting charging. On the right side there is a button to turn on and lock the gadget, and on the left there is a volume rocker. Slots for SIM cards and memory cards are hidden under the cover.

Communications

The smartphone is equipped with a standard set of communication tools:

  • USB 2.0 can be used in various modes, including Mass Storage (memory access from a computer);
  • Wi-Fi operating at 802.11 b/n/g frequencies. Supports Wi-Fi Direct fast data exchange technology (a tool that can replace the new generation of Bluetooth);
  • NFC - technology for data exchange and interaction with contactless payment systems;
  • Kies is a tool developed by Samsung that allows you to control data on your phone from a computer without connecting the phone itself with wires;
  • Bluetooth 3.0 is also supported.

Display

At the time of the gadget's release, the display installed in it was one of the best on the market, although it could not please with high resolution. The display has a diagonal of 4.3 inches and a resolution of 840x400 pixels. Given this ratio, the PPI number is disappointing, but this is purely a technical resolution. Overall the screen is much better, the picture is quite bright and sharp, the colors are oversaturated and catchy. The colors are unrealistic, but pleasing to the human eye. The screen consumes much less energy (energy consumption depends entirely on what colors are shown on the display; black consumes the least amount of energy). In the new generation of screens, the ill-fated PenTile (pixel arrangement technology) has disappeared, and Real-Stripe has come in its place, smoothing the picture. All this became possible thanks to the use of SuperAMOLED+ technology, which became the crowning feature of the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100. The glass above the display is tempered, manufactured by Gorilla Glass. There is an anti-reflective coating, but it is of little use. The image fades in the sun. This device also uses VibeZ technology (this is tactile feedback when you touch the display).

Processor and graphics

The heart of the smartphone is a single-chip ARM Cortex A9 processor based on the Exynos 4210 chip (formerly Orion). The processor is equipped with two cores, the clock frequency of each reaches 1200 MHz. The built-in Mali 400 video subsystem is responsible for the graphics performance. The hardware platform is quite powerful and looks extremely promising, but, unfortunately, Samsung likes to fill their phones with a bunch of pre-installed and unnecessary software, and they are also developing their own version of the bootloader, called TouchWiz. All this negates hardware computing power. The phone is slow. It slows down in menus, in applications, and when scrolling through long lists. There is an excessive load on the processor, significantly heating it. Despite the above problems, the smartphone can still play most games, although not at the highest settings. In the synthetic Quadrant test, the smartphone scored 3121 points, outperforming all its contemporary competitors.

Memory

The processor is complemented by 1 GB of RAM (800 MB available to the user). In theory, on paper, this is a record, but in practice, it is a failure. Even this amount of memory is not enough to cope with Samsung firmware. TouchWiz does not spare a single megabyte and multitasking suffers greatly as a result. You can correct the situation by reflashing the gadget and installing “clean” Android on it, without the terrible Korean add-ons.

The main memory in the device is either 8 or 16 GB, depending on the selected configuration. In both cases, this volume can be expanded by installing a memory card. Cards up to 32 GB are supported.

Autonomy

The battery for Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 has a capacity of 1650 mAh. An impressive figure for 2011. The manufacturer claims that the smartphone can last about 6.5 hours in talk mode and 350 in standby mode. Independent tests have shown that the gadget:

  • lasts about 12 hours in reading mode (e-book);
  • in audio playback mode about 19 hours;
  • When watching a video at minimum brightness, about 5 hours.

The results are not bad, but not the best either. To save more battery, you can use the built-in Power Save Mode utility. This is a kind of advisor that will allow you to configure your phone in such a way that the operating time on a single charge will increase, but this is not a panacea.

Cameras

Well, Samsung cameras can do something, especially in mobile gadgets. The Koreans were leaders in the industry 5 years ago and remain so. The smartphone is equipped with a main camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a front camera of 2 megapixels. Photos taken with the main camera are sharp, bright, saturated, without unnecessary shimmer, artifacts and excessive noise. Even in poor lighting, the smartphone produces a very decent picture. Other smartphones are not capable of this. Among the camera's features, it is worth highlighting software features, for example, filters that correct skin defects, panorama mode, searching for a smile and activating the shutter when one enters the frame, as well as the selection of different scenes (something like pre-configured parameters for different landscapes and light levels) . The front camera will please both those who simply communicate using it on Skype, and those who like to take selfies. It has much greater resolution, detail and viewing angle than many smartphones even today.

Great model

Experience of use: several months

Advantages of the phone 1. Amoled display with protective glass
2. Loud polyphonic and clear hearing speaker
3. the body is assembled with high quality, without gaps, backlashes, or cracks
4. built-in memory 12GB + flash slot
5. stable software, hardware, no freezes, no reboots.
6. good quality photo and video, 8MP camera + front camera
7. Huge range of accessories
8. a sea of firmware, mods, packs - simply an amazing theme for those who like to experiment with firmware and software decoration
9. the device’s unfading popularity to this day!!! Disadvantages of the phone: 1. battery... well, of course, the most painful problem of android + amoled
2. no update support... sad, stuck on 4.1
Well, the rest is nitpicking and minor dissatisfaction. You can't please everyone!

Comment about the phone:

An excellent, successful model for its segment and its age! Simply a super device! And even the C2 Plus, which replaced it, turned out to be worse, due to the castration of the built-in memory to 8GB and a glossy back cover, which means nothing at all... The characteristics are ideal for those years, you can’t get to the bottom of it, it’s been working stably without breakdowns for 2.5 years! Well, let’s say if it had a 4-core processor, NFC, and a display a little more like in the Korean version, the device would still be competitive!

Review No. 2 about the Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 phone

Great model

Use experience: more than a year

Advantages of the phone: Excellent display, modern hardware, nice design and build, very decent headset, Android. Disadvantages of the phone: Somewhat awkward weight and thickness in relation to other sizes, not the best sound, Samsung software

Comment about the phone:

It is very difficult to formulate a clear list of advantages and disadvantages, everything is relative. Before this I used windows mobile devices, including Samsing Witu and some HTC HD2. The devices were wired and configured over several years so that they met ALL requirements. I was very wary of switching to Android. But the time has come.
For those like me, I can say that for most programs you can easily find an alternative, sometimes more pleasant. But I haven’t found that dialer for myself (like Inesoft), and the recording of conversations from the line is not yet available on SGS2 and much more... Yes, for any person the question of size, shape, speed, system and software can turn into that everything will turn out to be somehow wrong. But this is just a matter of habit. That is why, when I chose and bought what seemed to be the best phone, it was a little strange that there was no WOW effect in the first days. However, gradually I changed my mind, I was surprised that this device contains all the features that come to mind, and, in the end, I can say: TAKE IT! He's worth it! But you will absolutely not regret it only if you have not very crooked hands, time and desire to do it. You should immediately flash it, get root and choose good software. A good part of the native - torn down to hell!
PS. New Year 2015 is coming soon, and the phone still works. I was already ready to purchase a more recent brother, when the CM11 firmware came out and I was completely satisfied. I installed the original enlarged battery... of course, it doesn’t last as long as I’d like, but it’s quite satisfactory.
