When you buy a new iPhone, sooner or later you find functions that you were not familiar with before. Overall, Apple does a pretty good job, with most of them being quite useful.
Another function of this kind is “Raise to Activate”. Many people don’t know what it is and, most importantly, how to turn it on or off.
Let's get to know a little about the purpose for which this function was created and what needs to be done to get rid of it, if necessary.
What does "raise to activate" mean?
If you have at least an iPhone 6S, then you have probably noticed that when you lift your smartphone, the screen automatically lights up.
This is the implementation of this point. It was made mainly for three purposes: to view notifications, use the “Control Center” or swipe left to call up the camera and take a couple of pictures.
If you don’t do anything and just put the phone back in your pocket (on the table), then the screen goes dark. For some this is quite useful and they take advantage of it.
But if it annoys you and you want to turn it off as quickly as possible, then let's do it.
How to enable/disable Raise to Activate on iPhone?
You may not immediately be able to find how to disable Raise to Activate. But as always happened on the iPhone, this can be done literally in a matter of seconds.
We follow these steps:
Now, when you pick up your phone, its screen will no longer light up. But if you suddenly want to try again, then we follow exactly the same steps.
If in iOS 10 you liked, for example, the Home application for controlling a smart home or the updated Apple Music service, then you will in any case move to the tenth generation, ignoring some of the flaws. But as iOS 9.3.5 rolls out, users have a choice: stick with the proven version, or find out if the seven most annoying features we found in iOS 10 will piss them off.
1. Raise to wake
The “Raise to wake” feature was designed to ensure that the display of the iPhone 6s, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 automatically lights up when it “looks” at the user’s face. Owners of smart watches have long been accustomed to such a trick, where the option has really taken root, which cannot be said about smartphones. In everyday life, the phone screen constantly lights up when idle, giving rise to false thoughts about missed notifications or simply distracting the owner of the gadget. Perhaps the only thing that was more annoying was the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, which kept lighting up at night during restless sleep :)
“Raise to wake” is disabled via: Settings -> Screen and brightness -> Raise to wake.
2. Home button to unlock
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus lost the mechanical Home button, replacing it with a sensor connected to the Taptic Engine, so that it simulates vibration when pressed, like in an electric car with a V8 growl from the speakers. At the same time, Apple has disposed of the age-old tradition of “Slide to unlock”. In iOS 10, swiping across the screen activates the camera, and direct unlocking occurs through the Home key. Only users of devices without Touch ID might not like such an update, since with a fingerprint sensor, unlocking is already carried out without sliding across the screen.
3. Clear all notifications
Along with iOS 10, users now have the ability to delete all notifications in the Notification Center with one click of a button, but this turned out to be feasible only for devices with 3D Touch on board. Even owners of not very outdated iPhone 6 are left out of work, which is a pity.
4. Music storage optimization
In beta versions, absolutely all users could use the “Optimize Storage” feature, but after the official release of iOS 10, automatic deletion of songs that you have never listened to became available only to Apple Music and iTunes Match subscribers.
5. Reduce Motion conflicts with iMessage effects
The Reduce Motion effect came with iOS 7. Its essence was to simulate a three-dimensional effect when the user rotated the device. The thing turned out to be quite controversial, however, many people liked it. So, now you have to turn it off in order to insert newfangled iMessage goodies into messages, otherwise they simply won’t be attached.
6. Access to correspondence on the lock screen
Of course, Apple managed to make the lock screen more powerful and...more accessible. It turns out that any outsider can correspond on your behalf without entering a password. To fix this, you need to go to Settings -> Touch ID and Password and slide the “Reply to message” toggle switch at the very bottom.
7. Automatic activation of handwriting input
Handwriting input, which has become one of the key features of the updated Messages, for some reason is automatically turned on when the device is in landscape mode. During quick conversations, finger tracing is of no use, so it is wiser to turn it off. The good thing is that the keyboard icon in the lower right corner can quickly return the traditional keys.

How to enable Raise To Wake mode
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Go to the Screen and Brightness section.
3. Turn the Bring and Wake switch... to the On position.
Apple calls the release of iOS 10 the most significant release in the company's history. Among the main innovations, it is worth noting an improved Control Center, the ability to use widgets on the lock screen, improved Photos, Maps and Messages applications, as well as an updated Apple Music service.

Raise to Wake feature and other software “features”
In iOS 10 for iPhones starting with the 6S, 6S Plus and SE models, the Raise to Wake feature began working. When activated, the moment you pick up the device (lift it from any surface), its screen lights up on its own. This is done for ease of unlocking - you just have to put your finger on the Touch ID sensor.
So if you are complaining that the screen on your iPhone turns on by itself only the moment you pick it up, this is the effect of this option.
In some cases, the Raise to Wake option may not work perfectly; try not lifting it from the surface, but simply shaking the locked iPhone - the screen backlight will light up. A similar situation can occur when the phone shakes violently, for example, in a pocket.
Therefore, if this is relevant for your phone model, turn off this function and check whether the automatic backlight switching on has disappeared? For this:
Done? Have you checked? Nothing has changed and the backlight can still flash on the screen at any time, despite the fact that the phone is locked? There are several other software features that can cause the display to behave this way. Here's what you can do:
- Check applications and games installed on iPhone. Perhaps this is just a “bug” of some particular program. For example, a notification should come from her - the screen lights up, but nothing comes.
- Jailbreak. Check all tweaks that have been installed or updated recently. Delete one at a time, starting with the most recent one. But in general, it is better to remove the jailbreak itself.
- , but (important!) do not restore from a backup copy. See if the screen stops flashing on its own on a completely “clean” device.
But all this may be meaningless, because there is a chance that the “root of evil” is located in a completely different place - from which you would not expect such a “set-up” at all... the SIM card.
The screen on the iPhone turns on by itself - is the SIM card to blame!?
In fact, it’s easy. To be more precise, this is not the fault of the SIM card itself, but of the entertainment services connected to it. This is especially true if the SIM card is new - just purchased or replaced. Moreover, each operator has one such option, which at some intervals shows various information on the display - thereby activating it for several tens of seconds without your knowledge.
But such information messages do not always appear. In some cases, the iPhone will simply turn on the screen, but there will be no text on it.
Here are the options you should pay attention to first:
- Beeline - "Chameleon".
- MTS – “MTS news”.
- Megaphone – “Kaleidoscope”.
- Tele2 - “Tele2 topic”.
It is these services that cause the display of your phone or tablet to turn on periodically. Yes, for iPad it will work the same as for iPhone. For example, on my iPad with a new MTS SIM card, a black screen with the text “Sim card played sound” constantly lit up.
I turned off MTS News and everything went away.
Be sure to turn off these services (this can be done either through the operator or with special commands) - the “calmed” screen backlight and battery will thank you.
The display lights up on its own - problems with the hardware inside the iPhone
Perhaps the saddest option. And you have to be sad because it is impossible to identify one single reason. There is no way to tell - the locked display is activated from time to time only because of the battery.
There can be a lot of options, and the battery is far from the only one:
- In the case when this happens during charging, it is worth checking the power supply, cable and wire connector on the iPhone. You should try to replace the adapter and Lighting cable, but carefully clean the connector - perhaps it has oxidized or dust has clogged up there. You can clean it with a brush or toothpick (no metal objects!).
- If, in addition to the fact that the screen lights up on its own when locked, the device (when it is completely turned off) also turns on on its own, then you should look towards the top cable with the power button.
- You also need to pay attention to the bottom connector and the Home button (especially if moisture has gotten there).
- And of course, low-quality spare parts and unprofessional repairs can cause this behavior of the iPhone or iPad display.
And much, much more. Only a good service center can determine the cause of hardware problems more accurately when conducting diagnostics. Fortunately, this procedure is almost always free. But I still really hope that your problem, dear reader, will be resolved in some way from the first two points of this article, and the matter will not come to repair.

Raise to Wake is a new feature in iOS 10 that automatically turns on your iPhone's screen every time you pick it up and tilt it towards you. How to disable “Raise to Activate”

If you choose to turn off Raise to Wake, your iPhone's screen will no longer turn on when you pick it up and tilt it. If it is turned on, the device will automatically wake up as soon as you pick it up.
