It's no secret that the global market for mobile devices has now taken a new direction towards the development of both display capabilities and high-tech processors, while taking into account the characteristics of weight, thinness, including the dimensions of the device. In other words, our consumer wants to own a high-tech capacitive toy with maximum response speed, a beautiful design, a lightweight but durable body and at the same time a large display.

The manufacturer takes all these needs into account when presenting the next flagship. It cannot be otherwise. To what extent did the manufacturer’s capabilities coincide with the needs of apple product buyers this time? In this article we will try to answer exactly this question.

All the innovations that the company introduced made the device a little heavier, but nevertheless these are justified actions and have earned approval in the smartphone sales market.

How much have screen sizes increased?

The six S has a diagonal of 4.7 inches, and the sixth S Plus has a whopping 5.5 inches; this is certainly not an enlarged version, but a worthy successor to the previous six model without the “S”. The screen parameters of the iPhone 6/6+ caused the most heated debate among enthusiasts almost instantly after they were announced. Here it would be time to stop and think: why use a screen with PPI (let me remind you, PPI is the number of dots per inch, they determine the clarity of the image) 400, and then 450, if the human eye cannot distinguish more than about 300 on such a screen (we don’t use it now Pentile screens, where is this characteristic inflated)? From a technical point of view, high pixel density only puts additional stress on the system, without providing any convenience. This means that all that remains is pure marketing: “Let’s measure ourselves by numbers!” In real life it doesn’t affect anything, it consumes resources, but... but “cooler”. Simply because the numbers in the comparison table are larger. Whoever has more is the flagship.

The approach, by the way, is effective, because it provides a killer argument about the superiority of any Chinese device over iPhones and predicts the end of Apple. It’s especially offensive to see this not in discussions, but in articles. In numerous “first looks” on leading English-language resources (including really top ones), everyone unanimously notes that the iPhone 6/6+ screens are very good, but in some apologetic tone, and at the same time they always add that PPI, Of course, it doesn’t reach the current flagships of Samsung and LG, which have as much as xxx PPI.

And thanks to this, the screen surpasses all competitors not so much in numbers, but in subjective image quality. All that remains is to understand: will they believe this?

The problem with such “silent improvements” is that they are difficult to assess immediately. Understanding comes with use, and for this you need to buy a device. For example, when the iPhone 4s was placed next to the Galaxy S4, which has Pentile, a chemical riot of colors and eye-popping colors, then when asked “which screen do you like best?” my friends chose S4 rather. More colors for the same money! True, after some time of working, you simply get tired of such a screen (and you begin to understand what “comfortable for long-term use” means), but that comes later. And, to the question of subjectivity: some people liked this screen even after prolonged use.

Finally, one can debate for a long time that “more PPI is all marketing,” but buyers fall for it. Therefore, when such questions as “why do we need more pixels per inch, and that’s enough! “We’d better do color balance,” Android manufacturers begin to ask, then their market indicators immediately move into the zone of negative values. In general, on the one hand, Apple's approach is correct from the point of view of achieving optimal results. On the other hand, it is not a fact that the market will accept it. Consumers sometimes vote for very strange decisions.

New iPhone screens: where's the catch?

However, the passage about 326 dpi probably raised snide questions among many readers regarding the iPhone 6+, which has a stated parameter of 400 PPI. Well, let's look a little more closely. Here is a table with the screen parameters of the new iPhones.

With the iPhone 6 screen, everything is more or less clear: it’s just an enlarged screen of the iPhone 5. The layout of the interface and controls is the same, the icons and fonts are the same size (so what, the PPI is the same!), only the distance between them has increased a little . As for applications, here again everything depends on the developers. Correctly written applications will simply have a stretched interface; incorrectly written applications will simply stretch out (but through system scaling mechanisms) and may lose clarity (since graphics and, possibly, fonts will be recalculated). In general, there should be no surprises or unpleasant moments after the iPhone 4 or 5.

But with the iPhone 6+ everything is completely different. The first thing we see is the good old Full HD resolution and rejoice: “Finally, something familiar, from the world of Windows and Android!” True, at the same time this resolution is perceived as something already outdated. (And this is a reason to sigh sadly a couple of times on different forums, “Yes, Apple is not the same.” I remember Zhvanetsky: “How can we be four, when we’ve already been five for a long time?!”) And only then do we begin to think that although the aspect ratio is here the same, but the resolution somehow doesn’t quite fit.

Let me briefly recall the history of the issue. The iPhone had a screen with certain parameters: a physical size of 3.5 inches, a resolution of 480x320 pixels and a pixel density of 163 ppi, for which all application interface elements were created (fonts, graphics, arrangement of elements). Since there was only one screen, it was possible not to make an adaptive interface, which is calculated in conventional quantities and adapts to any screen, but to draw it directly in pixels. This is much easier for developers (especially when creating graphic elements that are always in pixels) and significantly saves system resources (the system has to assemble adaptive interfaces on the fly, wasting computing resources, and it simply displays the drawn ones on the screen).

With the introduction of the Retina screen, the pixel density doubled (to 326 ppi). Elements with the same dot (pixel) size began to look twice as small on the same screen. The problem was solved simply: the sizes of the elements were doubled, and the graphics were redrawn to the new size (for example, 64x64 instead of 32x32 pixels for icons), and that’s all. The iPhone 5, roughly speaking, added space at the top, but the actual size of the element on the screen remained the same. Because of this, some applications did not stretch to fill the entire screen if the vertical size of the interface was set directly in pixels (dots). Actually, even then Apple actively promoted the use of proportional values, which makes it possible to adapt to any screen. But... In general, many lazy people simply added another option for interface sizes for the new screen and calmed down at that.

So, what happened with the new models. On the iPhone 6, the physical screen size has become larger, but there are also more pixels, i.e., the same 326 pixels and 326 virtual dots remain per inch (a pixel is a physical element of the screen, a dot is an element when calculating the size of the interface; you can read more in our a series of articles devoted to scaling - I recommend reading it to better understand what is stated below). As a result, adaptive interfaces will simply stretch out, and the distance between graphic elements in the interface will become greater. Wrong applications with interfaces in pixels must be stretched by the system itself - with some loss of clarity, but the functionality will remain. By the way, as far as I understand, in the iPhone 6, choosing the “large option” of the interface will lead to the geometry becoming the same as on the iPhone 5, that is, all elements will grow slightly in size. Some interfaces will most likely be rewritten by developers to make them easier to work with on larger screens. Plus, you will most likely have to remove controls from the top of the screen.

Strange iPhone 6+ screen

With the iPhone 6+, which for some reason was made to have 400 pixels per inch, this trick will not work. If you take a standard interface element at 163 PPI and stretch it twice (326 PPI), it will look very small on the iPhone 6+ screen. Triple the size? Then the interface elements and fonts will look too large on the screen, and besides, little information will fit on the iPhone 6+ screen with its current PPI - less than on the iPhone 5 screen. And this is unacceptable: why make the screen larger if it does it fit less information?

Judging by the available data, Apple has done the following: the interfaces are assembled to a standard density of 163 dpi with a 3x magnification, which gives 2208 × 1242 pixels (the resolution of the screenshots in our review is 6+). After which the already assembled interface is hardware scaled to 1920x1080. Thus, the final scaling on the screen is about 2.5, but it is done in two steps. In general, this is a suboptimal and rather unexpected scheme for Apple, which loves technical perfection. Not to mention the possible loss of quality.

And we’ll talk about a more interesting thing: what’s in it for us? On the one hand, it seems to me that there is nothing wrong. With high pixel densities and proper scaling algorithms, artifacts and compression errors should not be noticeable, at least on fonts. And where they are noticeable, it is rather the fault of application developers who do not apply new standards. Therefore, gradually, as applications are updated, the problem of incorrect display should go away. Another thing is that this will come at the cost of a lot of additional effort for the developers - they immediately received two new additional screen form factors, for which they will also have to calculate and optimize the interface.

And a few more conclusions

Thus, the iPhone 6 screen retained its optimal (from Apple's point of view) density of 326 pixels per inch. On the one hand, at such a density the eye no longer distinguishes the pixel grid, which means there is no need to further increase the resolution for a 4.7-inch screen. On the other hand, all fonts and graphic elements in applications are designed specifically for this pixel density, so there are no problems with displaying applications. In general, for the Apple ecosystem this is a screen with optimal parameters.

But the 6+ screen looks, to put it mildly, strange. The combination of diagonal and resolution, which is non-standard for Apple, results in a non-standard PPI - 400 pixels per inch, so that fonts and graphic elements of system and application interfaces look smaller on it than on other Apple smartphones. From a technical point of view, everything is also very, very strange: first the interface is assembled for one resolution, and then rescaled to another. This is completely out of character with Apple, which has always been distinguished by the elegance and technical excellence of its solutions. And it’s so clumsy here...

Why did this happen? We don’t know the true reasons and, most likely, we won’t find out. Various assumptions are made - for example, about the desire to save money and use common Full HD matrices, and not build something of our own with strange parameters. Or that the “true” resolution (i.e. 2208x1242) is being saved for the next generation of iPhone (7+), which will already be great. But both of these assumptions sound strange when applied to a smartphone that is supposed to be a flagship for the coming year.

In general, there is a suspicion that the iPhone 6+ is not a flagship, but some kind of experimental product that was hastily assembled on the knee in order to catch on to the promising market of “tablet phones” and not miss it completely. This would completely explain the strange story with the screen: there was no time left to produce screens with the required parameters, so we had to take a standard solution. The poorly designed case suggests the same thoughts: both the fact that the iPhone 6+ bends relatively easily, and the inconvenient location of the power button (it is made in the same place as the iPhone 6, but due to the different dimensions of the case, it is inconvenient to use here). Moreover, for all other hardware components 6 and 6+ are compatible. Yes, information about the presence of the iPhone 6+ in the line began to leak quite a long time ago, but this was already the production stage. But we don’t know how long the development cycle lasted. By the way, Apple clearly underestimated the demand for the 6+; the main shortage is now for this model.

In general, there are some suspicions that both the form factor and the screen with such parameters (5.5-inch diagonal, 1920x1080 resolution) are some kind of intermediate solution, and it’s not a fact that it has a future. But if we take the “internal resolution” of the iPhone 6+ interface and Apple’s standard pixel density per inch of 326 PPI, then we get that the screen with these parameters should have a diagonal of exactly 7 inches. I wonder if Apple is planning a large seven-inch tablet model in the future with a “native” ratio of interface and screen parameters?

Of course, using a seven-inch device as a smartphone is already difficult and inconvenient. However, now we have a smart watch Apple Watch, which, in combination with an audio headset, allows you not to take out your smartphone at all for current urgent actions: answer a call, send an SMS or message in instant messenger. By the way, Siri is also being actively raised to the level where it can take control of these functions. If so, then the main device can only be used when a large screen is really needed (i.e. the tablet scenario) - and there will be no need for any compromises.

This would be a truly breakthrough device, with completely new functionality and user interaction scheme. It may be quite contradictory: it may be convenient to use, but will traditional users agree to such a drastic change in the entire model of interaction with the electronic assistant?

However, it is very likely that these are solely my fantasies, based on a random coincidence of parameters (from which a 7-inch diagonal is obtained) and on inflated expectations of some kind of breakthrough device. We are still waiting for revolutions from Apple, and I even wrote about this myself in the first part.

But in reality, we are only waiting for an expansion of the range of large smartphones with different form factors. Moreover, now there is a technology that allows you to get approximately the same interface on almost any screen diagonal: first it is rendered to the requirements of program interfaces (i.e., the original size with a multiplication factor: for iPhone 6 it is x2, for iPhone 6+ it is x3), and then scaled by hardware to fit the desired screen. And users are given a choice between “normal” and “larger” interface sizes, which will allow them to achieve an acceptable font size for any combination of screen parameters - within reasonable limits, of course. Such a solution will provide the company with some transition period, during which it will force developers to stop using absolute parameters in interfaces and start making adaptive sizes of elements.

True, this option looks very sad and boring. If Apple simply begins to expand its range of devices, then, perhaps, it will really be possible to say that the revolutionary logic of the old Apple is a thing of the past. And Apple will turn into another boring company a la Samsung or HP, where everything is calculated, planned, logistically justified and tested in focus groups.

But in any case, such a leapfrog with the screen is an unpleasant blow to the image of the creator of only complete and optimal solutions.


Yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced two new phone models - iPhone 6 And iPhone 6 Plus. The devices have acquired a new design, new sizes and more advanced functionality. The first thing that stands out externally is the completely new dimensions; the width and height of the new products have grown due to enlarged displays, the diagonal of which is even larger than in the 5-series models.

Looking at the image, you will roughly understand how much the proportions of the screen and the phone itself have increased. If the diagonal of the iPhone 5 and 5S was 4 inches, then the new items are equipped with the following display sizes:

  • iPhone 6 – 4.7 inches
  • The iPhone 6 Plus is even larger – 5.5 inches.

In general, screens are growing by leaps and bounds, on the one hand this is of course good, it is more convenient to view content, but carrying classic jeans in your pocket is unlikely to be comfortable if new models fit into them at all. Well, ardent admirers of new products will have to go to the store and buy pants with side patch pockets, so as not to carry them around in their hands. It’s a little easier for girls; they almost always have a bag; the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will definitely fit in it.

As a result of the use of new larger displays, the height, width and weight of the new iPhones have increased:

Height and width

  • iPhone 5S – 123.8 x 58.6 mm.
  • iPhone 6 – 138.1 x 67 mm.
  • iPhone 6 Plus – 158.1 x 77.8 mm.

Of course, the new items increased in size and became heavier, which was to be expected:

Device weight:

  • iPhone 5S weight – 112 g.
  • iPhone 6 weight – 129 g.
  • iPhone 6 Plus weight – 172 g.


But the thickness of the new iPhone models is pleasing, because they have become even thinner:

  • The thickness of the iPhone 5S is 7.6 mm.
  • The thickness of the iPhone 6 is 6.9 mm.
  • The thickness of the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 mm.

We've sorted out the external parameters, now let's examine the new design of the body and other elements. Finally, Apple designers have removed the sharp corners that were used previously, starting with the iPhone 4. A phone with a smoothly smoothed edge, in my opinion, is not only more pleasing to the eye, but I think it will be more pleasant to hold such a handset in your hand.


Moreover, the glass in 6 models seems to be not as flat as was used previously. For example, in the very first iPhone model, the rounding effect was performed by a special chrome frame, but now the glass itself is rounded, it seems to be a continuation of the body.

The silent mode switch and volume buttons remain in the same place, but the design of the buttons has been changed, now they are similar to those used in the 5th generation iPod touch. The power (lock) button has moved to the right side; this solution is apparently borrowed from Samsung Galaxy S smartphones. You can now reach the lock button with one hand, although it all depends on the length of the user’s fingers; the button is located above the SIM card tray ( see the very first picture of the article).


The top of the iPhone was left completely empty, with no buttons or headphone jack. The colors of the new models are the same as those used in the iPhone 5S - Champagne Splash, Space Gray, Silver. There is a choice.


I look at it all - beauty. The only thing that is off-putting is the antenna strips at the top and bottom of the case, and the same ugly Home key with a built-in Touch ID fingerprint scanner. If it weren’t for the last two nuances, I think I would think about buying an iPhone 6, provided that it fits into my pocket. In the meantime, I’ll stick with my iPhone 2G, for which there is no worthy replacement yet.
